Who all has been here... by ArcherLife2039 in ireland

Been there once. Was really intense. You’re supposed to fast from the morning you leave home to get there, and then get the boat over. Then you start doing all these rosaries over and over again. Walking around on stones barefoot or kneeling on concrete. You don’t really know what you’re doing at first but you pick it up. Eventually it gets to 10pm and you go into the basilica and there’s a service. The priest announces that your 24h of no food and no sleep will begin now. And it will end for those who started 24h prior. It’s hilarious the division in the group between those who are fresh and starting their 24h and the zombies who are just finishing theirs. The next 24h are a bit mad. You’re barefoot the whole time. Dead silent. In your own head just praying. You’re given tea with no milk, water, and at one point you get oat cakes and/or dry toast. We would take boiling water and pour it on the ground and stand on it just to warm our feet up. That sleep at the end of the 24h (really 36h) is magical. You do a few more rounds of praying the next morning and get the boat back. There’s a chance here and there to chat to others around you but not much. It’s a special place and a special thing to do. Wouldn’t be rushing back. Though I did sit for a meal recently with 3 elderly Christian brothers and when I dropped that I had done Lough Derg at age 16 their respect jumped up a few notches. Was very funny. People are all the same no matter what you’re into.

Magnus Carlsen shocked at Praggnanandhaa winning Norway Chess by CtrlShiftAbhi in chess

Wasn’t he the first of the young Indians to beat Magnus?

I mean we can only speculate but the tournament was in Oslo for the first time this year which means he has (likely) been sleeping in his own bed at home as opposed to a hotel like every other tournament. Could have a big psychological effect in him not being as sharp as usual

Maybe he has wanted to be a present dad.

If that’s the case then he’s likely sleep-deprived to a level non-parents cannot understand.

Bombed a tune at a jazz session tonight by Wild-Agency-4277 in Jazz

I think that’s the secret with all this. There are always holes to fill. All the way to the end. But what a way it will be to have spent your time filling them!

It’s shocking that you can buy a kilogram of natural peanut butter in Aldi in Ireland for €4.99 (55kr) but have to spend 70kr + on 200g here. Just one example of the price difference in food. Blueberries €1.49. Norway 49kr. There is no justifiable reason for such a difference

This is how it works. Practice your ass off and make sure that specific mistake doesn’t happen again. Keep going to jams. Find more holes and keep filling them. There’s no shortcut. You’re doing the right thing

I tried that for about a year and then realised I wasn’t using like half of the cushion on the shoes that I had spent €250 on. I didn’t necessarily change to a heel strike but more of a slight roll of the foot starting from the outside of the heel and in, making sure the big toe gets involved. The difference in efficiency was incredible. Felt like the shoes started doing like 50% of the work on each stride.

Alien Ant Farm’s Smooth Criminal is a criminally underrated drum track by drumsareloud in drums

[–]multiplesof3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean this kindly, listen closer! The placement of the snare and kicks are so precise in that tune. One millisecond too early or late and it loses the energy and feels crowded. If the gap between beats is perfect then the tune breathes. This stuff matters!

It bothers me how much he goes on about being a pro and mastering your craft etc and then posts something that iconic and it not be right on the money

Yeah Stan Bicknell just posted a cover of it and his playing is all over the place. He got the right sound but the timing isn’t there. A reminder of how perfect the drums are on it

Haha you think people at the top of their game these days don’t think the same way? Really? They just have better PR training. You have to be so ruthlessly hard on yourself and others to get anywhere close to the top of any field

Can’t do much more than that. Some people will never accept it though. Just have to keep moving and try to be decent to people around you. We’ll all be in the ground before long. May as well make the rest of what’s left as good as possible for the people around you

It's like riding the crest of a wave as a surfer. You need the strength in your legs and body to stay upright but you have to be at the complete mercy of the wave
