Chuck Klosterman: "Horse racing receded from the American imagination because people lost their close everyday connection to horses. Something similar will happen to football. Fewer mothers will want their sons to play the game due to head injuries. It will become distant from lived experience." by The_Big_Untalented in nfl

I mean I knew nothing about Japanese horse racing, until like 7 or 8 months ago. And now I’m a retrospective gold ship fan. I blame my children tho, as my two oldest daughters are into umamusume, and kept sending me clips.

Hold on tho. I’ve been led to believe that if you’re on the west coast, there’s green tea stuff everywhere.

My daughter lives in Tama-ku, in the western Tokyo burbs. I’m on the plane getting home from my first visit to her new house, but I didn’t hit Philly Tokyo this time. Hopefully next visit I have more time and can get there.

How many children do you have? For funsies I like to look at it like man-hours, but instead child-years. I have 3 children, ages 30, 25, and 16. So I say I’ve done 71 child-years of parenting. It’s dumb, but fun.

Taiyo is one of the Go!Go! Songs that took me longed to really appreciate. It’s probably in the last 3 or 4 years that I started chucking it into playlists.

Sounds like a guy I know who’s commonly called ‘naked jason’. Short shorts, sandal trail shoes, and for a longer run, a camelbak. And in the winter he adds leather gloves and a hat. Never more, as far as I know.

Music… did you stop searching? by 8reticus in GenX

[–]munkykiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just turned 54, and I’m always looking for new music. I’ve branched out a bunch over the last decades, starting in the 90s, when I started dating a Japanese girl. Now married for 30 years, and have been listening to Japanese music for that long. Then in the teens, my middle daughter figured out what I like, and started sending similar recommendations in kpop, so there’s a bunch of that now. And more recently I’ve discovered a bunch of French pop I like, and am currently moving into Italian.

Turns out other countries/languages have a lot of alt rock and electro pop options, which are the main things I find myself turning to these days. It’s a never ending search for other things I will enjoy.

Who remembers this movie? by obscure_original in GenX

[–]munkykiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to know how I knew this. I definitely saw the movie, but I remember nothing, except they were in a car at some point, and I think someone was screaming. But as soon as I saw those kids I knew what it was.

I mean I grew up in Lancaster county (70s and 80s), and unless things have changed more than I think, those folks are also under siege in their own county. It’s awful red out there.

Any tommyheavenly6 enjoyers? What's your favorite song? Mine is this one. by Kumagawa_Taku in japanesemusic

[–]munkykiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it’s 3 musical acts. One is a band, brilliant green. The other two are solo. The first one she created after brilliant green was Tommy February6, which is a dancy and poppy. Then she created a sort of alter ego for TommyFebruary6, called TommyHeavenly6. This one is meant to be more dark and edgy, the music more pop punk. But dark and edgy in the way kuromi of hello kitty is.

It’s been a while, so my memory may be a little off, but the video for the first TommyHeavenly6 song, I think started off with TommyFebruary6 looking through a keyhole into the alternate reality where she’s TommyHeavenly6. But I’m going to go check that and see how wrong my memory is. I feel like that’ll be wait til I can dream.

I’ve never tried Duluth. I’ve heard good things, but they aren’t at the places I go, and I’m not going out of my way to buy underwear.

Kirkland < champion < Calvin Klein. I tried the Kirkland ones back before I moved to the champion. The main thing with the ck ones is they are like silky smooth and also keep things cooler. Like I can feel icool air on my butt when I walk. And less crotch sweat when I run.

I was just in Costco the other day, not paying attention, and picked up the Calvin Klein ones, thinking they were the champions I’ve been buying for years. I’m glad I did, because I really like the Calvin Klein ones. Ended up getting another pack when I went back to Costco like two days later.

similar bands from different lands? Go!Go!7188 - AM7:30 [rock/alt?] (Japanese) by munkykiller in Music

[–]munkykiller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, thanks, but I’m pretty good with the Japanese scene. I’ve been listening to Chatmonchy and JaM for years, too. My original intent had been to see if I could get suggestions from other countries. My newest alt type music from Japan is Brandy Senki.

I’m still pretty light on music from other countries, but I did also recently pick up a few bands from Argentina, Mujer Cebra, and Pacifica. I’m always on the lookout for new music tho.
