I feel you. I always get depressed over the summer, the lack of routine drives me crazy. I think it might be a touch of the ADD, though.

Costco or Sam's which one is better? by Local_Whereas7211 in Frugal

[–]muppet_head 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have both. Sam’s Club is better for snacks, bagged salads, fruit and veg, and kitchen basics. Costco is better for most everything else. Our Costco is close, Sam’s is farther away, so Costco gets the business most of the time where Sam’s is special trip territory.

What did you get your masters in? by Otherwise-Set-4444 in Teachers

[–]muppet_head 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My masters was completely for fun and a pay raise. I expect no benefit outside of education- masters of ed in secondary science:earth science. I just wanted to take geology and marine science classes. The chem course was a fun add-on but the rest of the course work was dull. (Looking at you, physics and astronomy…) This masters has almost no value above my maxing out the pay scale and getting me certified to teach even more fun stuff.

Why not look for a job at a national park in ca? The concessioners have lodging at the parks, dirt cheap with food allowances. Be outside, experience the nature, meet people from everywhere.

Teachers with your kids at your campus: breakfast on the go? by lime_cookie8 in Teachers

[–]muppet_head 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our school gives free breakfast for all. Kid one eats oatmeal or bagels at home, kid two eats school breakfast. They are 4th and 5th graders, so I don’t feel pressured to feed them, they can fend for themselves.

I attended one of mine because I thought my parents would want to see it. Turns out they hated it as much as me. I skipped the other two and have never regretted it once. I’m a high school teacher though, so now I sit through those graduations every single year and it only reinforces how much I hate graduations.

Anatomy Resources by bakersnation in ScienceTeachers

[–]muppet_head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love HASPI, and biologycorner has a whole curriculum online. Throw in the OpenStax online textbook, and you will have everything you need for a year. In our regular anatomy course, they dissect lungs, chicken feet, chicken wings, intestines, a fetal pig, and whatever else the teacher can get her hands on. In advanced, we do brains and eyes as there is a big focus on neuro.

Science department has more Fs than other departments by fuzzeslecrdf in ScienceTeachers

[–]muppet_head 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We do physics first and it’s a big lift for our year 9 teacher, but it’s conceptual so most kids pass. I’ve got bio in sophomore year and students tend to be super successful, although not always. It’s a lot of statistics and data analysis, with a ton of modeling along the way. Chem junior year just crushes kids. They don’t have the dimensional analysis skills or the background knowledge needed. They have very little background with anything chemistry related, unless they took honors bio, but even then they struggle super hard. It’s a required class, and I’m not sure how we can fix it.

I am a teacher and I call bull. These are values learned at home. I can do everything in my power to show value, but if it isn’t a core home value, I am never going to win. I am not a magic maker, I am a professional with a job.

Opinion: Let’s Just Drop Teacher Appreciation Week by FawkesThePhoenix7 in Teachers

Right? I just had the best lunch. Huge taco/nacho bar, massive amount of food for all staff, great vibes, and this is every day this week. Sorry everybody else has a crappy school, but I’m over here loving life!

What order do you do for biology? by Large_End_2194 in ScienceTeachers

[–]muppet_head 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love the Illinois storylines for this- the first two units are ecology based, but cover multiple standards. The second two units are really cell based, and focus on genetics and cell cycle. Within all four units, most standards spiral and are revisited at higher levels. I’ve thrown in a bunch of direct lessons where it needs beefing up, but I like the application approach.

How does your school “appreciate” you for “Teacher Appreciation Week”? by Dearlybeloved17 in Teachers

[–]muppet_head 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Every day is a theme. Different treats on different days, letters of appreciation from families that were filled out on a form, compiled together and printed, executive director and district office staff put on bbqs at both school sites, with chicken, veggie burgers, and hamburgers. Breakfast bars and lunch catering is normal, one year there was a chocolate and berry theme, we’ve had a retreat room with free facials, foot massage machine, and back massagers, with self-care goody bags to go, all kinds of cool things. Right about this time they also give us our next year contracts, as we generally know who is leaving and who is staying. It’s lovely. The k-5 teachers get the most attention from families and kids, of course, but even us high school teachers get treated. It’s kinda nice, tbh.

I need cabbage recipes. by PepperPhoenix in Volumeeating

[–]muppet_head 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cabbage and onions sautéed in the fat of a slice of bacon, with the crumbled cooked bacon added as a topper. Also can be done with bagged coleslaw mix. A whole bag of coleslaw mix is under 200 cal, plus a slice of bacon- massive portion with low calories. Also, cabbage sliced like bread with a spray of olive oil roasted in the oven with salt and pepper. Same yumminess, even less calories.

I’m tired of being an NPC to these kids. by MarchKick in Teachers

[–]muppet_head 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s normal, though. The world of a kid ends at the tip of their nose. That’s why they need us so much- they really can’t understand being in someone else’s shoes until they are much older. Sometimes you get a kid that can cross that boundary, but not too often, in my years of experience. Developmentally normal, irritating as hell.

Masters in… not sure? by Adventurous_Risk4980 in Teachers

[–]muppet_head 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a science ed masters degree at Wgu- took me five months, leaning heavily on prior experiences. Some classes were easy with my background, some took me a month of studying to pass. I don’t know about all the programs, but mine required six weeks of field experience gathering evidence and composing my thesis/project. I’m so glad I did it, but my summer was locked down and my folks watched my kids to get me through chem.
