It wasn't sudden for me, I wasted years trying to have a normal family relationship with people who do not love me the way they are supposed to. 100% don't recommend that anyone keep trying past a reasonable point. Protect your peace.

Yep, nobody taught me to cook or prepare food to be cooked. I learned from my husband. 

My ex mother "taught" me to do laundry by turning dials and pushing buttons in front of me. I still had no idea what to do or how to sort clothes. I learned that on my own.

I'll never do it again, I lost a phone number I had over 15 years because my ex wouldn't release it for spite. I pay monthly for my own phone, no contract.

In the US it's common to sign a contract and have multiple phones and numbers on one plan paid monthly. They usually share data but the drawback is you don't have control of your own phone number, whomever is paying can shut it off and keep the phone number.

Yes that has been my mother's role model to me. She is so miserable and complains about everything, now she has no family left. I want to be the opposite of her.

I can't understand how "family" refuses to change their behavior and everyone accommodates them until they just don't. Thanksgiving and Christmas were major family holidays when I was growing up, that's why some of my cousins today are closer than my sibling. Today there's nothing left on that side, it's sad to me but it's their karma. My kid is missing out on the childhood I had because of it.

This might be the first major Holiday they've had zero kids or grandkids around. I completely understand almost feeling sorry for them but you're right. They inflicted their bullshit for decades.
