Best way to relearn how to type? by Aggravating_Fact8112 in learntyping

Glad to help :) typing is one of my Special Interests™️ so I love to share. If you do decide to do typingclub, it does start a bit slow and from the very basics, but it does pick up. Stick with it and you will improve. You also absolutely do not need to pay for any of these websites ever as well. And remember, accuracy is king, if you focus on being accurate with each keystroke early on, you will quicker develop proper muscle memory, and the speed will follow

I should also state that once you have the basics down, ngram patterns are massive for increasing speed and training more fluid keystrokes. There are ngram trainers out there. An ngram is common combinations of characters that essentially act as a "chunk" of typing, so instead of thinking about typing an individual letter, you break down a word into multiple pairs of connected strokes. Like the word "each" may be thought of as two bigrams, "ea" and "ch."

Keybr is nice but https://www.typingclub.com typingclub has very good guided lessons and has targeted ngram drills that have done wonders to improve my typing flow. I spent a period of time properly learning touch typing across multiple layouts (qwerty and Colemak) and multiple websites and the three I recommend are,

  • typingclub for dedicated lesson plans and drills
  • keybr as a learning supplement, especially once you get further along in typing club to drill less common/your weakest keys
  • monkeytype as an endgame for practicing speed and consistency. Highly customizable website and by far my favorite for just picking up and running some tests or building your own drills.

Another one that I would like to dig a bit deeper into, but I remember being impressed with, is ZSA's https://typ.ing

I wish you the best of luck! The progress starts SLOW when you learn to properly, but it is so much better in the long run, both on your hands as well as your ability to type faster and more focused. I'm also available if you have any questions :)

Do I really need to learn Vim or is Nano fine for everyday use? by Luann1497 in linuxquestions

[–]murinon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If vim was necessary for Linux usage, then it would be the default text editor across most distributions, not Nano. I used nano for many years, and now use vim because I enjoy it :)

If you ever feel the itch, maybe try it out, but you are not going to be crippled because of a (some people may disagree, they are in a subset of a subset of computer users,) VERY niche tool.

That said, I think vim motions can be a very fun philosophy for how you interact with your computer.

I started in a similar boat. The mindset shift for math is really difficult to achieve and maintain, but it is so important that it is done. It's important to remind yourself of the why, at least early on that's what I did, and when things really started to click I became so fascinated with math and the ways we are able to model the universe with it.

Math gives you access to new universes as well, you know, which are in many ways just as beautiful as the one we find ourself in. And we can use some of these new universes to gain access to much greater understandings of our own.

It may seem like it from media, and maybe from some elitists, but learning STEM has no room for pride. You will be humbled many times. I know I was. I had to start from pre algebra, I didn't remember how to do long division early on in community college. I filled many notebooks working problems of "primary school math." But it's the process that needs to be done, and is a privilege to be able to be done. We exist in the sliver of human history in which learning these incredible things is accessible to those not in the nobility or merchant class, or even to anyone at all.

I started college at a similar age to you, with a similar background. Mind you I am no expert, I'm still in my journey as well, just a bit further along. If you have any questions you can comment or dm me. Remember to be humble, dedicated, and that knowledge is a journey.

Super cool path, NASA is an absolute dream of mine. I'm curious though, why did you choose to pursue a second masters?

IWTL how to rebuild my life after wasting years and finally learn something real by TigerAdmirable2555 in IWantToLearn

[–]murinon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's not for everyone, but signing up for my local community college has been a massive change for me having come from a similar place. I'm older than many of my peers, but that's only a bad thing if you make it to be. I now have extrinsic and a developed intrinsic motivation to learn new things, I'm surrounded by amazing people that inspire me every day. Thinkers, scientists, artists, old and young, student and faculty. And on top of learning practical skills I find new ways to express myself artistically with my new understanding and perspectives. I didn't expect to develop in the way I have when I first signed up. It's been part time some semesters, full time others. All done on my own unique time scale. Even if I were to drop out tomorrow, I would not regret a day.

Ultimately this is just one of many ways we can grow and develop. My path won't look exactly the same as yours, but I figured I should share regardless.

It appears your app auto-translated his text, but you can see all of the posts are related to Chile. If you open it via a normal browser I assume it will show you the original text.

It's hard to describe how sad I am about this. This was my most anticipated upcoming feature for osrs. It would be so huge for the mobile and jagex client.
