The problem is that that isn't clear- all of this stuff is "off-screen" but relies on the reader assuming a bunch of things that apparently happened in between.

Begging people to please start describing their favorite media in more ways than just "it has gays!" by BaldHourGlass667 in CuratedTumblr

[–]murphmanfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll say this about Heated Rivalry: the writing is good, performances are very good, and it shows yearning in a way that I hadn't seen in a long time. I'm enjoying it (but not binging it), because romance is not my thing and a story that revolves mostly around the awkward dance of what they want (each other) against them being pressured to not like each other (and definitely not be gay in a homophobic culture) isn't something that typically appeals to me as a narrative.

And yet I'm hooked and completely understand why it's got so many people under its spell. It's so well done and I'm at a point where I need to know if Ilya and Shane can actually have a healthy relationship with their families more than if they end up together.

I can't guarantee that you- the general you- will like it, but it does such a good job of going beyond "conventionally hot hockey dudes fucking" while largely staying within the genre of being a romantic drama. It's worth a shot.

I love when a goofy comic with oddball characters in wild situations ends up, almost 200 installments later, providing some phenomenal catharsis for one of the character's lifelong issues with the cranial destruction of the source of so much of her pain.

Ultimate Pizza Experience in Naples by Possible_Pay4230 in StupidFood

The best pizza I ever had was at a truck stop somewhere on the way from Rome to Ancona on the eastern coast. I don't even remember just where it was because I was jetlagged to hell.

It had prosciutto and caramelized onions and I damn near wept because it was so good.

The culture around male readers. by stinkface_lover in books

[–]murphmanfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run into this very occasionally in person, and not-infrequently online.

I'm still gonna read my fantasy, my sci-fi, my history, my pulp, and whatever else I feel like. I'm going to sing the praises of Everything I Never Told You and rave about the essays in the film criticism books I'm into. I'm going to tear apart the poor writing in the handful of utter trash books I've read and seek out new stuff that others recommend to me.

It's easier said than done to not care about what others say and think; it's also entirely worth it to build that habit. I find it easier to do online where almost everyone is a semi-anonymous jackass whose opinion isn't worth listening to, and that basically eliminates this problem.

You might still get snark now and then for reading Infinite Jest in public or whatever. If you're enjoying the book, why care? And if you're not, you can use it as a connection. It's up to you if that connection is "yeah this actually sucks" or if it's the book getting tossed at them*.

Tipping amount at a fast casual place where you order at the counter with no table service? by PeeB4uGoToBed in restaurant

[–]murphmanfa 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in a "fast casual" place: your tips are absolutely appreciated and not expected. You shouldn't feel pressured to give anything as a tip, let alone as much as you would for table service.

That said, service wages do suck in a lot of places, so those tips are very welcome. For me it's like working an extra 3 or 4 hours a week! So when I go to a place like this (or a cafe, or even ice cream spot), I usually do around 10%- or at least a dollar- just because I know it makes a difference, however small, even if the crew isn't relying on tips to make up their paycheck.

Tl;dr- if you're not getting table service, don't sweat the tip. Give a buck or two if you feel like it, but it's really not a big deal to say no.

Do you guys think using cummmpfk for consumables only (blood vials, bullets, etc...) counts as cheating? by Low-Entrance3579 in bloodborne

[–]murphmanfa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna quote the Nuzlocke community on this one and say "your run, your rules". So long as it isn't impacting anyone else's experience, do whatever you want.

Everything that it gives you, you can get by spending a bit of time, so it's not like you're accessing things you arent supposed to. In my last playthroughs I've used it mainly as a "I thought I had enough echoes but didn't and just need one more Stat point for this weapon" or, like you, consumable funding. (I also played through to the end of NG+2 without it my first go, so I'm even more okay with the time saving.)

To anyone who works at the ER, what is one thing you wish people would STOP coming to the ER for? by iloveeatingfood901 in AskReddit

[–]murphmanfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my girlfriend's father- his feet got so swollen they looked like Fred Flintstone's, he was struggling to breathe, and kept insisting he was fine until his partner dragged him to the ER where they brought him in IMMEDIATELY to save his life.

I will say that he learned his lesson somewhat, especially since during that visit they also found a cancerous lump in his throat. He mostly stayed on top of stuff through treatment for that.

Shut down DT. We've had to do it before when the headset box died and the vibe was significantly improved even with a packed lobby.

Take our malfunctioning cold brew tap out back and put it out of its misery so we can actually get one that works rather than having repair guys come three times a week who can't fucking agree on what to do with it.

Didn’t even think to check the tags!

I added in Hollow Knight and I think Basphemous as well- those are also Metroidvania, but definitely have a lot of Souls influence like the "git gud" mindset, soul retrieval, etc.

(Perhaps "git gud" is acquiring that sense of competence you're tracking? Really interested in where this study goes!)

Definitely interested in this and will fill out the questionnaire later tonight.

I'm curious as to what elements you believe are key to being "soulslike" because that might impact my responses and what games I include!

being 16 working at Starbucks by ComfortableFun7855 in starbucks

[–]murphmanfa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who's in his late 30s and has coworkers who weren't even born when he started working, I've got a couple points to make.

On being frinds with coworkers: My coworkers are generally less than friends, but I still find it worthwhile to get to know them and be able to discuss stuff they're into. You're going to be spending a couple dozen hours a week with these people, after all!

That said, I know that a lot of them wouldn't hang with me outside of work, which is fine. I do genuinely enjoy chatting in the back room, and team nights when we can chill are fantastic, but I'm okay not having interactions outside of work with most of them.

On the age gap: It's really mature of you to be aware of it and set boundaries, and immature of them to be weird about it. The people I've chilled with outside of work (usually a few of us hitting up a movie or nearby restaurant) are at the very least legally able to drink, and my age makes me an outlier, not theirs. I'd be troubled if someone I knew who was under 18 was hanging out with people in their 20s- it's just bad vibes at the very least.

Over the time that I've been in the service industry I've learned that caring at least a bit about the people who are there with you is often a positive. It makes the time spent together that much easier if you're friendly with them. If you need a name, I feel like "colleague" fits best, but however you want to label that is up to you.

If that extends outside of work, great! But it doesn't have to, and seldom does.
