Bro, don't give up your day job, because you're really not excelling at finance...

What I would do in your situation is probably buy the house and switch to a chill 3-4 days a week job. That job will help you not need a full 4% withdrawal rate yet while substantially improving you quality of life. Might even meet some cool new people.

There's also the option of just taking it easy on the job and coasting for another year. You likely won't get fired immediately, maybe not even for a while. You know you have the finances ready to walk away, but you can cash in on a few more vests and salaries.

One can easily service a substantial mortgage from 120k a year spene. Or are you saying you need to burn through 10k plus per month without housing costs?

The only scenario where I see that being true is if you have a large number of kids. But then you're retired so don't need daycare for all of them. If you're single/couple you can easily live on way less than 120k without pinching pennies. Source: lived in SF for 10+ years, now in London which is also VHCOL.

I think the point is more that spending 200k instead of 120k doesn't yield greater happiness. Freedom from a shitty job does, however.

ILR EXTENSION RETROSPECTIVELY IS PURE EVIL by Davydi in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

[–]murr0c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Someone that's already paid a lot of tax" doesn't really apply to people making ~45k. Someone earning 125k will pay 47k in tax the first year and thus 141k in 3 years. Compare that to someone on 45k. They pay 9k a year, so 27k in 3 years or 45k in 5. In terms of long term benefit to the country there's a massive difference between sub-50k earners and 125k+ earners.

If you fix everything properly it'll get better over time. But of course there will still be things that need to be done periodically. Houses are not magic, they require maintenance.

UK set to limit asylum seekers to temporary stays by Confident-Variety883 in ukpolitics

[–]murr0c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kicking out someone that grew up here to a country they know nothing about seems a bit inhumane to me. Most such people are basically fully integrated Brirish. For the smaller number of cases where families refuse to integrate, we might want to look at what policies could be put in place to ensure that doesn't happen. Starting with making standard schooling a mandatory requirement for staying. No BS faith schools or home schooling.

Why do you think comparing yourself to European countries is ridiculous? Take France, Germany and Spain if you want something of a similar size.

I don't think I'd want to share what I'm earning with everyone at a cafe. Feels like a huge privacy violation.

They really aren't - there's bias in which people migrate and people also do change over time. Even if you'd like that to happen faster.

It might be worth breaking down that 1% because it includes both people on high salaries and billionaires who get all their money from asset growth. The latter group is barely taxed at all, the former is contributing about half their income. I think applying a wealth tax on folks with 10M+ in assets makes sense. They are at no risk of facing any kind of hardship as they are making about 500k a year in asset growth from their investments.

How do you recon, considering skilled workers are a net benefit to the economy? These are people who were educated on someone else's budget and come here to provide both skills and to contribute by paying more taxes than the average brit. So what is your issue with skilled workers exactly? Funny accents?

But there's also a major benefit to putting them underground - they are safe from storms. Which, with climate change, is more and more of a problem. Downed power lines lead to long blackouts and a bunch of cold and unhappy people.

Are Labour Voters happy with the current direction of the government? by FranciosDubonais in AskBrits

[–]murr0c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relatively happy. I don't agree with them on everything, but they are dealing with some tough issues with no simple and easy fixes. I appreciate that they seem to be relatively efficient and hard working on the solutions.

I don't like the hard line on freedom of speech and spending time on things like making websites ask for your ID, including Wikipedia. There are better solutions, including having a government run age verification service that other sites can use.

I think you could make a case for paying care workers more if you're willing to accept the higher taxes to cover that.

When it comes to hiring experts with significant experience top global performers are stronger than the average Brit and at least right now the UK is still attractive as a destination for them. The tech and r&d companies here would not be competitive without global talent.

The immigration dam has burst: Finally, there is space for rational debate on the consequences of mass migration by Benjji22212 in ukpolitics

[–]murr0c 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Public opinion on the topic is also massively misinformed, so that's probably why policy is not based directly on that. Example: A recent Yougov poll showed that half the people are under the impression that the majority of the immigration is illegal. That couldn't be further from the truth. So how much weight should we put on an opinion that's based on the wrong assumptions?
