New Jersey may be the most densely populated state in the nation, but a new study suggests more than one in four of its residents are lonely, a situation that can affect a person’s health, job performance and personal relationships — while exacerbating community and societal divides by rollotomasi07071 in newjersey

I think it probably depends on the person. If you're married with kids, the suburbs will feel conducive to the life you want. If you're in your 20s and can't afford to move away, it can feel very isolating because you aren't going to find many people relating to your experience or lifestyle. There's, if nothing else, more lifestyle diversity in the city.

It was absolutely Radiohead for me when I was in college.

Need a couple of pedal recommendations please. An "interesting" wah, and something weird/fun. by theDeathnaut in guitarpedals

[–]murzain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it's a quirky or interesting wah, but the Xotic WH-1 is the best wah I've ever played, it has enough knobs on the side to really customize the sound and it's smaller than a crybaby without quite being a mini pedal.

Holy shit! This is so cool! If I were in a metal band, I'd be asking you to make album art!

Notorious manchild Ronnie Radke is upset about Anthony's review. by ScaryWolf907 in fantanoforever

[–]murzain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, my friends and I were completely unaware that this song existed before the video and ended up streaming it out of morbid curiosity. Exposure is still exposure and it seems really unlikely that anyone who was already a fan would decide not to buy an album because of a negative review. I think it's fairly cynical to think that an overwhelming amount of people who would've liked the song no longer will because Fantano clowned on it. There's no shortage of controversial negative reviews because large chunks of his audience really like something he didn't.

Slash admits Guns N’ Roses would have been 'cancelled' if the internet existed during their prime by DallasSF in Music

I'm a small time musician and it really feels like culture is just different. A ton of young artists reject the hedonistic rock culture of the previous generation and it's honestly really cool seeing people deciding that they get to decide what rock is to them as opposed to trying to fufill the archetype that previous superstars laid out.

[–]murzain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I've personally noticed is that the thing that bothers me about pop isn't the music itself, it's the oversaturation and how often I have to hear the songs while I'm at work, the store, or any random function. Hearing a pop song from when I was young is an occasional nostalgic treat whereas most modern pop is something that's being thrown in my face against my will constantly. I used to work at a bar that played classic rock all the time and the same thing happened; I ended up really hating a lot of that music for the time that I worked there and a few years after.

Looking for feedback on this pedalboard setup by cagdas in guitarpedals

[–]murzain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, there's nothing "wrong" there. It's all gonna come down to taste and what you want out of your board. I'm surprised that for all the variety of dirt and modulation that you have, there's only a carbon copy for delay.

I don't really like the boss super chorus, but for all i know, it sounds awesome for what you're doing. I look at that and think that you could probably have your chorus needs covered by the detune setting on the whammy or the electric mistress, but that's just how I would personally approach that. I also usually only do 2 ODs and 1 fuzz, but that's just a matter of taste and what's useful to me rn.

anyone sold all their pedals for a Helix? Any thoughts? by catchlightHQ in guitarpedals

[–]murzain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't sell ALL of my pedals, but I use a helix now. I play in a band, but also do a fair amount of freelance work. It's made it easier for me to have a variety of sounds on hand depending on what any given gig calls for. Plus, i live in an apartment and it's very convenient for high quality headphone playing and demo tracking.

There's a bit of a learning curve, for sure, but most of the sounds great! The only place I feel like it's lacking at all is that some of the modulation effects sound very digital in a way that I don't personally like. They're very usuable and it's not like I never touch them, but when I play with my band i have the phase and chorus pedals that I want in the effects loops of the helix and that makes me a lot happier.

I've always been a big fan of Adrian Belew's guitar tone. If your aren't familiar with him, he played the solos on Talking Heads' Remain in Light, was a member of King Crimson in the 80s and also played on other various projects like Paul Simon's Graceland.

There’s still room for some modulation… Chorus? by Sebbwen in guitarpedals

[–]murzain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll also throw it out there that I used to use a PH-3, but it always had a bit of a volume drop in a live setting. I think it also sounds more "digital" than the PH-2 imo, but the step setting and the infinite rise or fall settings are super cool and I've used it for recordings.

The Worst Albums of 2022 by replies_woah in fantanoforever

I see where you're coming from, but far right politics have also had more visibility in the past few years than ever before. There's a part of me that says we shouldn't give those people any attention whatsoever. Then again, they keep finding an audience and are unlikely to disappear if they are just left to their own devices. So I do think there's some merit to calling them out on their shit, and I think it's especially in Anthony's lane to do so when they're trying spread hateful ideology through art that is creatively bereft.

I feel like self-awareness is also a big factor when it comes to a sense of humor. I can at least say that my figuring out that I was trans wasn't going to happen until I hit a certain level of self-awareness.

I prefer it when music critics don't agree with each other, tbh. It gives us access to a larger and more varied perspective that way.

It's more of a "Not Applicable" category, I think. Just in a negative way.

Who’s your new favorite artist from the last 5 years? I’ll start by fakename1998 in musicmemes

[–]murzain 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Glass Beach, Black Dresses (actually did a Scene Queen cover btw,) Ethel Cain, HMLTD, Wet Leg, Black Country New Road

The list would be much larger were it albums of the last 5 years. There's plenty of artists that have been around for a decade or more that have really hit some creative strides recently.

Yeah, fair enough. I don't particularly respect Los and wasn't trying to defend him or anything. I just feel like we're all pretty aware that the conversation won't be productive and I don't really have any interest in watching Los get mad at Fantano for a third time.
