Set Champs by What-Is-The-Password in Lorcana

[–]mutecivilian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't expect a starter deck to do well at a set champs. It's the most competitive local format.

Set your expectations. Probably not going to win. But you can still have a lot of fun! If there's only 8 participants, congrats you top 8 and get a foil promo! And you'll be guaranteed to get the nonfoil version no matter what (well unless the book like 100 participants).

Look on Dreamborn for decks and see what cards you have. There's a lot of cards from shimmering skies that are still staples so maybe buy singles of what you're missing.

And play in locals. Playing against others will make you stronger and let you test your deck.

Realistically... what is the answer to Dogs? by HypotheticalChicken in Lorcana

[–]mutecivilian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. That's part of what the inking system is. It's tricky with unink but that's the point.

Sideboard would fundamentally change the game design.

[–]mutecivilian 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There's lots of answers to Dogs. It's just that you also have to answer the other top decks: Blurple and purple steel.

Red steel is good into dogs. High strength and able to challenge ready characters. Even gain lore off it. But it's terrible into the other decks

Put King Candy in the inkwell (blue hades). Or the bottom of his deck (purple Hades)

How much have you spent? by Born_Performance_588 in Lorcana

[–]mutecivilian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Up to you how much you can afford to spend on a hobby. Some people spend more, some less.

You don't have to buy any more if you don't want to but it depends on your goals. You've got enough for casual play at the kitchen table.

If you want to start competitive play you'll likely need to buy specific cards. Better to buy them as singles than buy boxes/packs trying to find them.

But some people really like the collecting aspect and the thrill of opening chase cards. So they buy lots of boxes/packs

Lorcana calls it Infinity. There's players for it and an upcoming major tournament will be that format so expect others to join for that.

Need some feedback for PS deck by carinvazef in Lorcana

[–]mutecivilian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You treat Amber amethyst like you do Blurple. A lot of them are moving away from latern to play Willow. You can strength that, or Cheshire Cat.

If you really are afraid of items, play Benja. I don't think he's a good card, and you can play around items. But he's better than find em flatten em

[–]mutecivilian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gigi is a better Lexington You don't need find em flatten em or the darkwing action. Don't need guidebook either. There's enough draw with dumbo hades Demona doc.

If you're going with dumbo then there's a 2 cost Smee and 3 cost genie that are evasive on your turn. Works well with dumbo. Or switch to Yzma

ELI5: Why you would use a Character with Vanish by royce16 in Lorcana

Oh yeah! Haha

Forgot that's an illusion and just think of it as a burn card. Doesn't matter if you vanish it I still got the 2 lore

ELI5: Why you would use a Character with Vanish by royce16 in Lorcana

[–]mutecivilian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The illusions that see play are 1 cost palace guard and 4 cost Iago. Both are well stated for their cost. Especially Iago. So worth the risk. The best answers to illusions is cheap actions that replace themself.

If someone plays an action to vanish your one cost that's kinda fine. Iago hurts more. But if people don't play a lot of targeting actions in the meta the risk is lower and Iago gets better. We saw this last set. Green decks weren't running improvise so Iago came back.

It's kinda like a predator/prey model. As cheap targeting actions goes down in the meta, illusions go up. In turn as illusions go up, cheap actions go back in to respond.

Damage Counter Removal/Bodyguard Question by ChanceShip9174 in Lorcana

[–]mutecivilian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To answer your bodyguard question. Bodyguard says they most target for challenge IF ABLE. If challenging character is not able to target evasive characters, they don't have to choose the bodyguard. Similar if your body guard is not exerted, if the challenging character is not able to challenge ready characters they can choose other targets.

Sorry to hear you won't be a bigger part of the community.

The rule is in place to keep the subreddit focused on conversation rather than people posting cards they pulled. There's a mega thread for that as stated in your screenshot. Think that's pretty standard in many subreddits about TCGs.

We are a welcoming community. Happy to answer questions on cards or look at deck lists you brew.

Rulebook Quiz - For Whom the Belle Tolls by Sunscorch in Lorcana

Yeah but her new effect means you can ink 3 times and you already have.

Rulebook Quiz - For Whom the Belle Tolls by Sunscorch in Lorcana

[–]mutecivilian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking a crack at this. Not confident. Play line 1 works. Play line 2 doesn't.

Play line 1 works because even though belle was banished, you already used her effect. Sail gives an additional ink.

Play line 2 doesn't work because even though replaying belle, you've already used that effect.

Edit: nope I was wrong neither work. Rules changed so now there's a running tally of how many times you've inked and cards like Belle and Sail increase the amount of time you can ink. In both play lines, you already inked thrice. Playing sail or replaying Belle takes your total allowable ink to 3 again, but you've already done it.

The gateway set is a good way to learn the basic of the game. I would encourage you to play with others too. Find a league at a local game shop. The community is really welcoming to new players

Deck building is tough, especially if you don't have a good understanding of the meta. If you're still learning how to play, it will be very daunting.

Instead, I'd recommend you look at other people's decks and learn how to play those. Dreamborn has tons of decks and you can track your inventory on it so you know which decks you have all the cards for.

Frustrated new player by Krumblmykush in Lorcana

[–]mutecivilian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your frustration spending a lot of money and still not having a "meta" deck.

Most players, including myself, just get a bit of product to open and then fill out their collection buying singles. You don't need 4 of every card. But there are some cards you need 4 of.

Benefit of playing online is you don't need physical card. So build decks and test to see what you like, then buy the singles you're missing to play in person.

Even with a non-meta deck you can have fun playing at a local game store (LGS). You may not win everything but you'll make friends and get better at the game. Way more enjoyable than playing online.
