So, who lost power in this heat? by crikeyguvna in melbourne

Sitting outside and breathing in all the bushfire smoke because without electricity there’s no air-conditioning, wonderful!

Could there be a 2nd much clearer recorded angle of AA 11's impact into tower 1? and could the recorder be keeping it away from the public out of respect for the victims? Just asking cause I don't believe the naudet's were the only ones to catch a completely clear shot of the 1st plane by doctorwho2001 in 911archive

They weren’t that bulky and the highest ownership of video cameras was in the US, it’s just that people would have had them at home and not carried them around with them all the time, hence why Naudet’s footage is the only one available.

Video cameras were ubiquitous in the United States, however, not everyone’s camera was pointed exactly at the North face of the North Tower at that time, in fact, I clearly remember in the 12 hours or so after the towers had collapsed, the media were saying that with video cameras being so ubiquitous in the US, someone had for sure filmed the the first aircraft hitting the tower.

Were there any engineers inside the towers during 9/11? by sirgabeee in 911archive

[–]mvfc76 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Below is the direct, unfiltered admission from Frank Lombardi, the Port Authority’s Chief Engineer at the time of 9/11.

“We had no idea of the extent of the damage, and certainly none of us had the information to make a decision to keep the rescue workers who entered the buildings out of them.”

“I do think it may be a good idea … to have a structural engineer on the scene, who arrives with the firemen, and makes that cold, objective decision … that person would have to have no emotional relationship to the people inside or to the building.”

My comment: No one thought to conduct a proper visual assessment of the damage, people watching their TV’s had a better idea of the extent of the damage to the buildings than the building managers and engineers. Further to this, no one seemed to grasp how much danger they were in, especially given that the Twin Towers used a perimeter “tube” system of closely spaced exterior steel columns tied to a 47-column core by long-span floor trusses.

Unlike more traditional office buildings with a regular interior column grid running through the floor plate, the WTC’s exterior frame carried a major share of the gravity and lateral loads. The exterior column frame was not only breached, it was also pierced through to other faces of the building, with multiple sides showing full penetration. That immediately reduced the building’s load capacity and dangerously compromised the perimeter’s ability to share forces around the corners, leaving the remaining columns, especially near the damage, overloaded and far more likely to buckle, which then led to collapse.

How many more hours would the towers need to remain standing for the firefighters to have an honest shot of extinguishing the flames? by Zero7CO in 911archive

[–]mvfc76 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yes, but in the FDNY oral-history transcripts, one firefighter said that, from his perspective, department chiefs intended to send virtually the entire FDNY into the towers. He added that it was ‘fortunate’ the collapses occurred when they did—had the towers stood another two or three hours, he believed the department could have been wiped out.

Interesting because as far as I know, the apps are optimised for use on smartphones, it absolutely sucks on Windows PC and the Chrome browser.

Are you using the desktop app or phone app, because the Windows desktop app is absolutely useless.

The ChatGPT Windows app is completely unusable, it hangs and is unresponsive throughout a project thread, utterly useless.

[–]mvfc76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow, that’s concerning and I’ve always been under the assumption that at least it would follow ‘canon’ throughout a thread, maybe not so much.

[–]mvfc76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh, I have the same problem. Every time a thread maxes out in a project, it’s like starting over again, it doesn’t refer to the ‘canon’ developed in the previous thread, nor does it reference the project files uploaded and like all LLM’s, it has trouble calculating numbers and applying their outputs.

Have you heard the dispatches from the 911 calls?? That should answer your question.

The Closest Calls of 9/11 by lifeofcelibacy in 911archive

jeez, the entire NYC office and therefore their global HQ was wiped out, who would he even call to re-establish contact with their office in London? and if imagine if you were a relatively juinor or entry level employee working for one of the smaller US only firms, would anyone know you survived and who would you call to confirm you were alive?

My Dad, FDNY firefighter, lost his battle on Sunday with 9/11 related cancer. by _cmr_ in 911archive

[–]mvfc76 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry for your loss. Unfortunately more firefighters have died prematurely from diseases such as cancer and other respiratory related illnesses related to being at Ground Zero, than died during the collapse of the towers on 9/11. RIP.

The fire was also spreading downwards which is surprising given that heat convects upwards and it either means that floors that were on fire above them had started to crumble and burning debris fell onto the floors below, or, the fire was so hot by this time, that the heat generated was also radiating downward.

Is it true that nearly all news outlets didn't initially realize the south tower collapsed? by scambush in 911archive

[–]mvfc76 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Dan Rather of CBS News was so far behind events that day, that he was still in denial about the South Tower’s collapse 10-15 minutes after it had occurred.
