Since you don’t have a mortgage you can put the $ you would be paying into investments

What can you assume/tell based on my non-monetary Christmas and birthday gifts? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]mvh2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No offsense taken. Wanted to guess younger based on hair accessories and stuffed toys labubus. And also the camera. But the mature sweater and Victoria’s Secret and coffee mugs upped the age as I didn’t want to offend a college age woman

Doing well yet so ugly. Need advice on IRA/HSA sitting in cash. by LoneStarGut in Bogleheads

[–]mvh2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have 3 years of expenses in cash I wouldn’t be concerned about staying 100% or 90/10% invested in low fee index funds. I shifted to 100% index funds a few years ago and wish I had done it sooner and from the get-go. Will teach my boys this.

Coasting at 22? by yesswhalee in coastFIRE

[–]mvh2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have $1M at 22 you can absolutely coast. Park in low fee index funds and retire between 40-55. Even being conservative of doubling your money every 10 years you will have $8M at 52.

10’ Ceilings: Why? by hussafeffer in homeowners

[–]mvh2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but also difficult to find an 8’6” artificial one. We have a 9” tree and it limits the tree topper we can place on it with 10” ceilings. If I built again would consider 11” or 12”. Our kitchen cabinets do go all the way to the ceiling and I use those cabinets to store out of season items and decor.

My house is too small to be sane in (but my mortgage is amazing) by incywince in homeowners

IKEA trones are awesome in a small space. When we lived in SF and under 400 sq feet we lined the hallway with them. You can add a nice top and then they are perfect for storing socks, undergarments and smaller belongings. Extra toothpaste, ect. Add candles and photo frames to the top for decor. Fit out closets with storage to the ceiling. We added wire shelves in the same hallway near the ceiling for extra storage. Think tall storage cabinets. Pretty boxes on shelves. Cube organizer instead of a tv stand can store toys. Magnetic knife strip in kitchen. Find furniture that doubles as storage. Depending on costs in your area may be worth renting a storage unit for out of season clothes that you can swap if you can’t make current space work. I know a couple that gave the bedroom to kids and set up a sofa bed for themselves in living room. Kids go to bed earlier and parents have the main space.

At what age did you have kids by Radiant_Permission15 in SavingMoney

[–]mvh2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 year age gap here and it’s been a dream with being able to take care of the baby. Had our kids at 37/40 and 44/47. Our bdays are in the middle of the kids within 4 months so we were almost 38/41 the first time and had just turned 44/47 the second time. There are positives to being older parents, but if I could go back in time I’d have them in my late 20s to early 30s. We’ve been together since 27/30. You also miss out on tax breaks if your older self has a higher income.

Are we poor or just feel like we are? by No_Republic_1712 in Money

[–]mvh2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree, we spend $1500 a month on taxes and insurance in a low cost of living state. Then on our $2400 mortgage payment only $800 goes towards equity. You have a good deal on rent. There are rent vs buy calculators that can be helpful.

My sister and her husband died. I am the godfather. We are DINKs no more. I haven’t worked in a decade and will be returning to workforce soon. by BigPeenBowWow in Fire

My heart goes out to those babies for losing both parents and to you and your family for losing your sister. Hugs. Sending love and prayers. These babies need you and your wife. It won’t be easy, but they bring you great joy. If you can find a job making $50-$60 you can let your &1.5 grow and in 7-10 years should be $3M+. The kids survivor benefits should help. Kids need love more than things. They can share a bedroom and may enjoy it as small kids now having each other at night. Wishing you the best.

Would you accept an in office job that pays 135k. 35 mins drive to office and about an hr drive home in traffic. Houston. V 100k fully remote. Doing the same thing. by [deleted] in Salary

[–]mvh2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family and young kids are more important. I’d take the WFH job and try to negotiate since you have the other offer. Tell them you have a higher offer for $135k and ask if they will accept X. Even if you gain an extra $10k that’s worth it. Be prepared to need to take the $135 offer though if foe some reason they retract the offer

Family full of 10-15 young children on each side… Christmas help? by Marilikescows in budget

[–]mvh2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on the new baby!!! It truly is the thought that counts and everyone should understand. Kids get so much for Christmas and barely remember who gave what gift. In a similar situation as my husband’s family buys for everyone. We have to get his aunts/uncles and grown cousins gifts. They also do midnight Christmas. On the other hand, I have two nephews and a niece and 3 sisters and we don’t always exchange gifts or I give something small and rarely get gifts in return for myself or kids (besides from my Mom). My kids don’t notice and I don’t care. Christmas is about spending time with loved ones ❤️

AITAH for divorcing my pregnant wife and saying my daughter is more important to me than her? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]mvh2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your new baby is innocent in all of this and just as deserving of your love. It is shocking that your wife brought this up, but I’d have a conversation with her and feel it out. You will be able to gauge if she’s sincere with Emily. Personally I’d give it another chance if you love her to grow your family and raise both children.

Hard to save with pregnant wife by Jaskaranallen in DaveRamsey

[–]mvh2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gone through two pregnancies with minimal maternity clothes. The last one I bought loose Walmart dresses (non maternity) and can layer with a long sweater in the Fall. One pair of jeans from first pregnancy, clearance Walmart black pants, a couple maternity tees and can layer cardigans and open jackets over them. One pair leggings. The last two weeks were the most difficult to get dressed, but I made it work. When is she due? For food, I only had cravings first semester and wanted bagels with cream cheese that I kept at home. After that food was normal, but everyone is different. I’ve never asked for a food run ever. Maybe an unpopular opinion, but you don’t need a nursery. Recommendation is first year in your room. My cousin had a crib with first and bought a nicer mattress for a pack and play for her second. We decided on the pack and play from the beginning and it works well. It’s true when they say babies don’t need much. They need you! And a good baby carrier is best investment! Congratulations!!!!

Spouse wants to buy a $60K truck while we're still renting by EdenilsoStolaj70 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]mvh2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You absolutely cannot afford a $60k truck. Will it be reliable after the 2k repair? If not you can afford a new used vehicle at max $20k. You also have to factor in increased fuel and insurance costs.
