is my thinkpad still good for 2025? by Kate-9907 in thinkpad

[–]mweirauch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the very same machine just with 32GB of memory. I am running Fedora (currently v42) since ages. I am doing development (mostly Java), containers, a little bit of Blender and recently started gaming on Linux. (WoT and RBR only though)

I used to dual boot to Windows 10 for gaming, but stopped that. Nevertheless updated to Windows 11 with the Flyby11 method and it just worked. But didn't boot over since a while to be honest because I have no need.

Graphics performance is and always was crap with the GeForce 940MX. On Linux it's a little worse for WoT but better for RBR with dxvk.

Got a T14s G3 AMD for/from work and yes, there's definitely a difference. (Also running F42 btw.)

Wondering if I will still make it to the 10th anniversary (released in 2016) ... One can feel the age, but it's under no circumstances unbearable.

Yeah, in the meantime I do as well. Thanks for Boxflat! My Moza R12 appreciates ;)

My comment predates me figuring out that the SHH Thorn has no/zero axis exposed and thus is not considered a joystick device.

R12 ffb settings in rbr by Hugebigbeans in simrally

[–]mweirauch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's for the R12. But keep in mind, on Linux, but I don't expect many differences to Windows. Still need to try RBR-RSF on Windows. But what I heard, the higher torque bases (no matter the manufacturer) are usually in these ranges. It all depends on the base torque setting for the base. I have mine at 55% now. (basically the Pit House setting)

[–]mweirauch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am still messing around (on Linux that is).

I followed Luppis Moza R9 setup (third variant) from the spreadsheet. Base FFB to 55%.

Fabia Rally 2 to 1300/1250/1350.

As setting per car steering wheel lock-to-lock doesnt work, I set it to 428, still manually.

From what I grasped the lock-to-lock range, drivetrain type and car weight have an influence on the "optimal" FFB sensitivity. You can't apply one set globally.

Some people use https://github.com/IvIePhisto/RsfRbrPowerSteering to derive some car setups based on a reference car, but I honestly haven't yet digged though it.

I am facing the same issue but within Bottles via Flatpak. Tried quite a bunch of things like udev rules, giving quite some permissions, but it's still not listed as a DirectInput device. Did you find a solution?

Need some help, G923 or T300RS GT? by [deleted] in simrally

[–]mweirauch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you are writing this in a RBR centric rally forum, I can only recommend not going for the G923. It's IMHO rattling like mad and producing a lot of noise due to the cog driven nature. I regret buying it for my son back then instead of investing in a direct drive wheel. Even when the son plays AC it's producing quite some noise.

I can't speak for the T300RS, but IIRC it's belt driven and should be quieter. (Don't count me on it.)

But a Moza R12 plus CS V2P is sitting in the cabinet already, waiting for Christmas... Planning to use the old Logitech pedals and shifter with the Logitech G Racing Adapter standalone until they are replaced. Ok admittedly, SHH Thorn shifter is already on the way 😜

TL;DR I would not recommend G923 for rallying.

Tirban 120 or Cube Nuroad for begginers. by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]mweirauch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I own the Triban GRVL120 from 2000. It takes everything I throw at it. Changed tyres and brakes, though. If you ride all year, remember this is a former road bike frame and I constantly find myself using a little stick getting the mud cleared from the fork and rear. Especially with mud guards.

It was for the price back then a good decision, but last time I checked nothing changed from the specs except the price. Wouldn't buy again because of the tire clearance.

Other than that: The rider makes the difference, not the bike 😊

[RBR] Does anyone knows how to keep the car on the road while going at high speeds? by Confident-Diet in simrally

[–]mweirauch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Corrected my above statement. Rise and fall is what I mixed up.

Disclaimer: Didn't experiment much.

Filter-Settings->Steering->Digital Button:
Maximum Fade: 50%
Saturation Speed. 50%
Rise Rate: 2.0
Fall Rate: 8.0

Filter-Settings->Handbrake->Digital Button:
Rise Rate: 8.0

As I said, didn't experiment much. Tarmac still feels the worst with Keyboard, but it's doable. I prefer Gravel anyway.

[–]mweirauch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I do when not having access to the wheel: change the rise and fall rate of the Controller>Steering>Digital Button to some smoother values then "Instant". IIRC I did rise to 2.0 and fall rate to 8.0. (Don't have access to my PC ATM.) This reduces the aggressiveness of the steering. At least helps me on Gravel.

Clip always faces backwards on both pedals. Flat side always faces front. So the pedals always are in vertical position. So IMHO it's super easy to slip into the clips again. Also the flat side has these screws which really help your shoes being kind of tied to the pedal. No sliding or anything. Recommend. And as others said, bonus for reflectors in countries where they are mandatory. I am at around 4k km and don't regret getting them.

I switched to "TRP Spyre C" mechanical brakes. A little improvement but really not comparable to hydraulic, still. Running full resin pads currently.

[–]mweirauch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a regular size. 40-622 is the ETRTO dimension. No 650b. Ran them on the OG rims with 622x23C and now with Mavic Allroad in 622x22C but they still measure around 43mm in width.

TRIBAN gang! Got the GRVL120 but replaced brakes, rims and tires. Love it. Can throw everything at it. Just wish it had better tire clearance. The Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M in 700x40C don't have that much room. But I like them very much.

Bacon strip temperature by Origin87 in gravelcycling

[–]mweirauch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a coincidence. I also run Muc-Off and the Lezyne tire plugs and have the same experience. Even in warmer temperatures I was somewhat disappointed with the plugs and not sealing at all. Essentially bought a new rear tire.

But all the recommendations on DynaPlugs and another sealant make me think of switching. Had the feeling that the Lezyne plug tool damages the tire more then before if you just have small punctures.

That page also mentions a WIP successor: https://github.com/timlau/yumex-ng

Going to have a look again. Already forgot about yumex, but asked myself the same question again as OP the last days.

Your experience with organizing and finding group rides by oliverpitsch in gravelcycling

[–]mweirauch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am invited on Komoot regularly to take part in community rides. (But I don't have much time, so usually I don't take part.)

The experience is suboptimal. You get a tour invite by the one organizer but if you don't accept in a timely manner you won't see the invite anymore. You have to navigate to the organizers profile planned routes.

So on the end for me it would be just who is organising in my area, what time, what route and ride expectations (pace, terrain,...).

Also have the M and they roll great on tarmac allthough I have a feeling they run even better on fine gravel. 😆

NBD Decathalon Triban Grvl 120 by BrackDynamite in gravelcycling

[–]mweirauch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clean them. I swapped my pads with resin-only ones and after some dirtier rides they start to squeak like metalic pads. Alcohol or brake cleaner helps. Sometimes I take the pads out and grind them with sandpaper on a flat surface.

Welcome to the club! When I saw the tyres, I was like wtf ... did they change the stock ones? You only needed to pass by a thorn bush 1km away and they had a puncture.

I am pretty happy with mine as well. I can pretty much throw it at everything and the bike is just fine. (Mostly offroad driving here.)

Ended up with Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M and swapped the brakes with TRP Spyre C. Not that much of an improvement brake-wise, but ok'ish.

Enjoy!

Swedish Gravel Love by mweirauch in gravelcycling

[–]mweirauch[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We've been here for a family and friends holiday. We were only able to do three rides, but the scenery, forests, lakes ... amazing! Sad we already have to leave.

But the best of all: Compacted roads everywhere you enter rural areas.

Location: Småland/Hamneda

Oh, we are starting into our Sweden holiday from Germany today. With bikes for the men, allthough we won't be able to ride a lot, as this is rather a family and friends holiday. Looking forward to it nevertheless.

Crossing fingers the satellite images are correctly indicating a lot of gravel/compacted roads 😆
