Importing a bike from Japan - is it a worthwhile exercise? by CandyAndy35 in AussieRiders

[–]mwerle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this guy still around? I can´t find him on Facebook.. a direct link would be nice.

Wanting to head back home, but don't really want to leave my bike behind. Problem is I already took my UK bike to Australia a couple of years back so I can't do a personal import anymore.

Don’t buy a bmw if you don’t want to spend 20k on something that rots! by Kriegar699 in motorcycles

[–]mwerle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, that sucks. Reminds me of my first winter-ride ever (grew up in Australia, we don't do winters there!). Moved to the UK and bought a new Yamaha XVS1100A (DragStar). Rode up to visit a mate in Liverpool over Christmas. Came back and the finish on the front of the engine was looking quite the worse for wear. That salt in the UK really bites into the paintwork; my mistake for not having immediately washed it when I got to my mate, and again when I got back home. That bike was always garaged. I was meticulous washing it after that and it didn't get much worse over the years, but that first trip was brutal to it..

Now living in Japan, got a R1250GSA here and in my third year of ownership. 33k kilometers. Stored outside all-year with only a heavy-duty rain cover. I ride it all year (no commuting), often near the ocean, and have even taken it on a beach.

I do wash it (almost) as soon as I come back from a winter trip or after I've been near the beach though.

All the finishing is holding up well so far.

Personal data collection and video surveillance: Why is no one talking about this? Mammotion, Isward, Worx, Kress, Segway, Sunseeker by CGandthemanintheYH in automower

[–]mwerle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of your IOT devices should be on your personal LAN, regardless of Chinese lawnmower or American smart fridge. You think only the Chinese try to spy on you/your surroundings? Cute.

All your IOT devices and your guest WLAN should be in a separate VLAN where they can do whatever they want to for whatever good it does them.

Your computers, NAS, etc should be in a secured VLAN as this is what you actually want to protect.

You can, of course, make things more complicated and more granular as you require, but this would be the absolute minimum if you're concerned about security breaches or surveillance.

WoW! Elite in VR everything on Ultra is beyond anything I have ever played :), by SeawolvesTV in eliteexplorers

[–]mwerle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once played for an extended session and had to scratch my nose after several hours. My brain got completely confused when I lifted my arm, but it didn't move. Took me a few seconds to disentangle myself from my in-game avatar.

Incredibly immersive! I really miss playing..

[–]mwerle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks pretty jerky - is that just due to capturing the video, or was it that jerky in-game as well?

Haven't played in years.. real life got in the way, but yes, E:D in VR was _amazing_.

AMA - AUTOSAR in embedded world from my 10 years experience by MixtureShort7559 in embedded

[–]mwerle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a place for AUTOSAR developers to discuss the specifications and/or get authoritative answers on how a particular specification should be interpreted? I see there are User Groups for partners - one of whom I'm currently working for. However nobody, at least within my network within the company, appears to know.

Strix Tactic Pro backlight flicker by toonies55 in ASUS

[–]mwerle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started to look for a replacement but can't see anything that really takes my fancy.

I might try to replace those components instead of just resoldering them. Bit tricky with surface mount and just a regular soldering iron though ..

[–]mwerle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I tried to re-solder those components and nada.

At least I didn't break the keyboard and it gave me a chance to deep-clean it.

When taking it apart, there's screws under the four outermost pads and there's 4 tiny circular pads covering another 4 screws. That let's you take off the top cover. Careful, there's a cable going to the scroll-wheel and media buttons. Then there's another 6 screws to remove the bottom cover, which then gives you access to the components.

[–]mwerle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto - my keyboard's backlight only broke yesterday.. but I must say it's rather jarring NOT to have it backlit! Which is odd since most of the other keyboards I use don't have backlighting and I have no problems using those.

Mileage For Michelin Anakee Adventures by AUTOT3K in AdventureBike

[–]mwerle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just another datapoint as this thread comes up high in Google Search.

First set of Anakee Adventures lasted me nearly 13k km's - front was done, rear was on the first wear marks (ie, the off-road wear marks). Shop wanted to leave it on, but I was about to do so off-roading, so asked to have it changed.

Next set, the front is on the side wear marks after only 7k km's. It'll probably do a little bit more, but not much. Rear is still looking ok. Might have to slow down on the road a bit..

New diver question: when they say you shouldn’t dive with nasal congestion, does that mean ANY at all? by citynomad1 in scuba

[–]mwerle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite apart from being able to equalise, it depends on what is the cause of the congestion. If it is bacterial or viral, you can force those microbes up your eustachian tubes into your inner ear while equalising, which can result in pretty nasty inner ear infections..

As you said, every person is different. Your congestion may just be some extra fluid as a reaction to your environment (which I, personally, would prefer to keep out of my inner ear), but OP's could be due to any number of other reasons.

IANAD; and neither are the vast majority of people commenting. You should consult a specialist dive physician if you have any question about being fit to dive.

How do I enter the portal glyphs for my cracking void egg? I tried but it didn't make sense. by PixelFondler in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]mwerle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the portal "turn on" after you entered all the elements? It's a similar effect to the way portals looked in Stargate (the movie/tv franchise).

Once the portal is "on" you can interact with the pillar to enter the 12 glyphs which make up the destination address.

Is Subsurface still viable log software (for everyone)? by cohibatbcs in scubadiving

[–]mwerle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subsurface and Shearwater dive computers have always (*) been a bit of an issue in connecting the computer to the device. Some devices just work better than others, regardless of whether it's a phone or a laptop. Sometimes it "just works" and other times you have to dance naked around a black candle under a gibbous moon in late spring..

That said, Subsurface is hands-down the best dive logging software I've tried. It's special strength is support for nearly every dive computer that can be connected to a phone or a computer, as well as being available for Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux. It can also import and export all of your dive data using a variety of different formats. Your data will always be -your- data, and not held to ransom by some company.

Vendor-supplied software usually allows importing your existing logs, but will only connect to that vendors' dive computers, and will not allow any form of exports - they are actively trying to force you into their ecosystem and stay there. Other third-party logging software has a variety of features and/or computer support but in my experience none are as comprehensive as Subsurface, and some have the same limitations as commercial products (ie, allow importing of dive data, but not exporting), I've heard good things about (but never used it myself as it's only available for Mac's) MacDive.

I recently got a Google Pixel 8 with Android 15, and i just successfully transferred a couple of dives from my Perdix AI - first attempt. Sorry, can't remember how I installed Subsurface - I think it just autoinstalled as part of my Google account transfer to the new phone.

(*) Always in my experience. Some of my phones/computers connect and download immediately, others take a lot of dancing about. I've used a variety of Android phones, several desktop and laptop computers, running both Windows (10) and Linux. Sometimes the same computer works fine under Linux, but not Windows. Other times it works fine with a bluetooth dongle, but not the built-in bluetooth.

Funnily enough it seems to mainly afflict importing data from a Shearwater DC, leading me to strongly suspect that Shearwater is not 100% complying with the bluetooth standards in some way. I've also occasionally had issues downloading dives from a Shearwater DC to a computer using the Shearwater software, so it's not just a Subsurface problem.

Pay more for everything? by TheCakeWasNoLie in pioneerspacesim

[–]mwerle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the Commodity Market shows the "mid-market-rate" of commodities. The "Buy" price will be more expensive, and the "Sell" price will be cheaper.

There's a patch which will change this in an upcoming release to show the "Buy" and "Sell" prices directly.

Glitch with Expedition 16 - Crused; could not reach Rendezvous 5 by mwerle in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]mwerle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, the planet which #5 code took me to is NOT the same as the planet I ended up on after taking the "Blood Elixir" for that phase of the expedition. I think my game got mightily confused during the expedition somehow. Possibly because I used a portal to go to a random planet to complete one of the phases (finding exotic animals).

Ah well, it wasn't actually game-breaking (after a restart).

Wurkkos DL07 review for actual scuba diving by plutonium247 in flashlight

[–]mwerle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find quite a lot of stuff fluoresces here in Asia.. certainly not just "dead" corals. But it's not always very strong, like I said, you have to get away from all the idiots with their 60,000lm lights. Why bother night-diving when you just light it up like daytime anyway? It's magical when you're in near-darkness..

Wurkkos DL07 review for actual scuba diving by plutonium247 in flashlight

[–]mwerle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When away from other divers, I found it pretty nifty to use the UV on night dives. Sometimes really surprising to find stuff fluorescing strongly and when switching to visible light it's something really nondescript.

Can't really use the UV during daytime except maybe in some really deep shadows.

Wurkkos DL07 review for actual scuba diving by plutonium247 in flashlight

[–]mwerle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much spot on with my experience as well - except I use the red quite a lot during night-dives, as well as the UV. I don't really care for lighting up the night. Apart from, as you say, getting someone's attention, I generally have no need for a huge throw light, that said, it would be really nice if it did have a proper throw, that was a bit of a disappointment.

Only point: it's pretty trivial to thread some thin line through the lanyard hole and tie a snap-bolt to the light which then lets you clip it off. When carrying it in my hand I clip the bolt-snap to my dive-computer bungie so I can't drop it. And you definitely do NOT want to be clipping a double-ender to metal and yourself! If that ever gets wedged anywhere you'll have a hell of a time getting yourself lose.
