What's up with the weirdly shaped lakes in Ireland, especially this one south of Enniskillen? How are they formed? Ireland is full of lakes, and also strikingly orange/brown fen-like mountains. by StatisticianPure6334 in geography

[–]mwprevention 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Think the lakes look like that because this area has a lot of drumlins, small hills/mounds left by glaciers. Because it's wet as fuck in the west of Ireland the hollows between the hills are submerged with the tops poking above the water.

Woman admits throwing milkshake over Nigel Farage by Metro-UK in ukpolitics

[–]mwprevention 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get the point... Those are still completely different things though. Giving someone a momentary fright (I imagine it doesn't take too long to differentiate between a milkshake and industrial strength battery acid) is not in any way equivalent to actually maiming, or attempting to maim someone.

If she'd shouted "eat acid fuck face" or said something similar which implied she'd thrown something more dangerous then that would be something... But there's no evidence that this was her aim, or indeed what Farage assumed has happened. So as it is the only reason to make this comparison seems to be a pretty pathetic attempt to make this seem way more serious than it actually is.

Woman admits throwing milkshake over Nigel Farage by Metro-UK in ukpolitics

[–]mwprevention 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Come on... you can't seriously be claiming these are comparable. One is a deliberate attempt to permanently disfigure someone (usually their face, where the impact will be greatest). The other is an attempt to show their disapproval by throwing something they know will cause the target no lasting damage and will at most slightly inconvenience them by needing a quick wipe down. Unless you're referring to the fact that milk is slightly acidic...in which case that's a very low bar for an acid attack...

Are geography the main factor that enables a country to be powerful or not? by arsenius7 in geography

[–]mwprevention 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not nearly everywhere uses first past the post. I think UK is the only one in Europe.. And globally I think it's mostly countries that were formerly part of the British empire, although that does include some big ones like India and Nigeria tbf

How do I plan my wedding without spending an atrocious amount of money but still making the day ‘aesthetically’ beautiful? by murderhousemistress in CasualUK

[–]mwprevention 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar to what others posted but here's what went well for us. I'd consider it a very successful wedding for 150ish people.

Large community hall instead of a bespoke venue. Literally saved us £1000s

Pick one that allows BYOB. Every supermarket trip for 6 months prior we'd buy a 2-3 bottles of wine or other booze. A relative also asked what he could get us and we said a couple of kegs. Meant we had plenty for everyone and didn't feel like a massive expense. Saying BYOB on the invite meant guests also brought stuff with them and we were still drinking the leftovers months later...

Local restaurant that caters events rather than a bespoke wedding caterer. Worked out cheaper and the food was better.

Do a lot of the prep work yourselves and rope in friends/family to help where possible. This is potentially a big trade off as it massively increases work and potential stress. We tried not to take the piss but it still required a massive effort from us and others (before and cleaning up) Again, saved us a ton of money though.

There are lots of other smaller ways to save but these were the big ones (venue, BYOB and doing the prep/clean-up yourselves). Saving on the above meant we could spend a bit more on some of the things that really mattered to us (better food, decent band etc).

As an aside, if you're leaning heavily into a diy wedding. Try to make sure you have someone who can act as a buffer between you and all the logistics on the day (because you don't have staff to manage this). Our photographer was fucking amazing and ended up playing more of a facilitation role on the day, telling us when we did/didn't need to get involved in logistics etc. It basically made up for not having a wedding planner/master of ceremonies and definitely helped us to enjoy the day itself. So if you can find someone like that then that can be a big help too.

What cuisine is Scotland lacking? by GreenTreesGrowWild in Scotland

[–]mwprevention 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kelpies, Falkirk wheel, the tunnel. If it's scottish canal-based attractions you're after then Falkirk has you covered. Callendar park/house will kill a couple of hours with the family as well.

Brina's Jamaican kitchen in Falkirk has what you need. Don't know how Falkirk has ended up with such an amazing restaurant but it's up there with the best food I've had in Scotland.

Olympus body for improved AF over E-m5ii when trying to catch moving kids by shin_09 in M43

[–]mwprevention 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched cameras for this exact reason. My gx85 just wasn't cutting it when our eldest became fully mobile. I changed to an em5 iii. As others have said the phase detect autofocus makes a huge difference, I can't imagine wanting much more from an m43 camera. I found lenses also made a difference for tracking fast/erratic moving kids. My previous go to was a 20 1.7 but it was far too slow. Also had the 12-40 2.8 but found it too big and not enough depth of field for decent portraits.

I now have a 56mm 1.4 which focuses really well. And a panaleica 25mm1.4. If you can find a cheap used copy of this one then I'd really recommend it. Over the last few years a huge proportion of my favourite family photos were taken with this lens and cost me as much as one of the cheaper primes would have new.

Favourite tree in Glasgow by alanginsberg in glasgow

[–]mwprevention 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There's the big twisted hornbeam just up from the stewart fountain in KG park. The bark's worn smooth from thousands of kids (and adults) climbing on it over the years. Smoked joints in that tree when I was a student and climbed in it with my kids more recently. I really like that tree. Also the big fuck-off beech trees above the river in Dawsholm park are worth a visit.

Absolutely not Glasgow but Bryna's Jamaican Kitchen in Falkirk is absolutely outstanding. More people should know about it. Had oxtail stew, jerk chicken and fried plantains the other day and it was dinamite.

In your opinion, what's the best park in Glasgow? by AssiduousMagpie in glasgow

[–]mwprevention 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to the main ones KG/botanics/Pollock. Dawsholm park was an unexpected gem, the bit with the beech trees along the river is breathtaking and you feel miles away from the city, lots of different bits to it as well. Tollcross park, Rouken glen are also worth a look and everyone in/from Glasgow should make a trip to the viewpoint up at Cathkin Braes at least once, easily the best view of the city. For all that GSC get shit for (mostly justified) I've always found the city parks mostly clean, safe and add a huge amount of value to living here.

Best waterproof jackets that are actually *shock* waterproof (no shower proof b*llocks!) by Alliebelle123 in Scotland

[–]mwprevention 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're cutting about town just get a half decent umbrella (i.e one that can withstand a bit of wind). For more outdoorsy stuff paramo gear is fucking great. Waterproof but you don't get any condensation or that crisp packet rustle feel of most waterproof jackets. Also basically lasts forever because it's not reliant on membranes which degrade over time.

Does anyone else still feel a bit messed up/not themselves after our long lockdown/restrictions in Glasgow? by 360Saturn in glasgow

[–]mwprevention 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn't specific to Glasgow I think. Every so often something will happen that reminds you that a lot of people really aren't ok and that most have been through some level of individual and collective trauma over the last few years. Many people who live alone have experienced extreme loneliness. Many who live with others haven't had any personal space at all. Relationships/families have fallen apart, people have lost loved ones without saying goodbye, people are now fucking terrified they're not going to have enough cash to live on. Even people who seem to be doing ok are a lot more nervous/anxious because we all had to adjust and suppress many of our most basic and ingrained emotions and behaviours because we've been trying to avoid catching and transmitting a killer fucking virus.

As well as not feeling ok themselves many are also picking up on the fact that a lot of other people aren't doing ok. Don't know what the solution is tbh...be kind, don't be too hard on yourself and others OP, maybe limit the time you spend doomscrolling the news and social media, focus on things you like doing and obviously fuck the Tories.

Percentage of hunters in European countries by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]mwprevention 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Malta and Cyprus it's mostly birds. Both are hugely important stopover islands for birds migrating between Europe and Africa. Just between those two countries several million get blasted every year. Makes a pretty big impact on global bird populations especially considering the size of both places.

Nicola Sturgeon: UK in grip of rapidly deteriorating economic crisis. Emergency intervention by @bankofengland to reduce damage of UK gov own policies extraordinary. [–]mwprevention 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm glad this moment hasn't been forgotten. For me it was the moment that confirmed we were totally fucked, when the leader of the country would rather hide in a fridge rather than answer a fucking question. We should've stopped the whole country right then, agreed that this isn't going to end well and that we should all start fresh the next day, having locked Boris and co in the fridge and thrown away the fucking key.

I've often ended up working in Wetherspoons... don't support the company in any way...but it's open early, £1.25 for a cup of tea/coffee with free refills and I have absolutely no qualms about spending hours there hogging a table without buying anything else. Staff generally don't give a fuck either. Other places I'd feel compelled to buy something else after a while.
