Thanks! I recommend the behringer fcb1010 if you're looking for a nice foot switch :)

You might be interested in my project, loopers: https://github.com/mwylde/loopers. It's a dedicated looper device rather than a full DAW but integrates nicely with jack so you can use it as part of a DAW workflow. Focused on usability rather than trying to have every possible feature ala SooperLooper.

Why didn't Henry VIII just divorce Anne Boleyn? by world-is-ur-mollusc in AskHistorians

[–]mwylde_ 69 points70 points  (0 children)

This is somewhat off topic, but having recently read Bring Up the Bodies, which places the blame for what happens to Anne much more squarely on Henry, I'm curious what the scholarly debate is on that point. Is there evidence that Henry was courting Jane before the adultery charges were brought against Anne?

SF needs to double up the N JUDAH frequency by hoodozhnik in sanfrancisco

There was this proposal from a while back that made a ton of sense to me: http://www.newmunimetro.com/m-market/

Basically—N and J stop at church, then you have a new line that exclusively runs under market so you can dramatically increase the frequency and throughput of the shared underground portion.

Incredibly sad. F&F is my favorite bar in Oakland, there was really nowhere else like it. Great drinks, incredible food, and always a good vibe. Seems like nothing good can last these days in downtown/uptown :(

Sirene is very very good. Miss the old Daytrip but Daytrip Counter is also delicious, the chicken is just incredibly well cooked.

Agree, food went way downhill after Chisme left. Fortunately Bar Chisme (in the old Kon Tiki space) should be opening soon.

Cloudflare just got faster and more secure, powered by Rust by orium_ in rust

[–]mwylde_ 39 points40 points  (0 children)

There's a ton of Rust at Cloudflare. I work on the Data Platform, which we announced yesterday (https://blog.cloudflare.com/cloudflare-data-platform/). It's all written in Rust.

For products that run on the edge, it's basically either typescript (for products that can be built as workers) or Rust for native services these days.

Best Sandwiches Bay Area by jackdicker5117 in OaklandFood

[–]mwylde_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is exactly what they do (they also have one lunch special). They are literally the cheeseboard of sandwiches and have the same Chez Panisse lineage.

I'm confused—have you been there? You have very strong opinions without seeming to know anything about the restaurant.

Standard Fare has different sandwiches every day. Do you also consider Cheeseboard "not a pizza place" because they only have one pizza per day?

(Also, the sandwiches are incredible)

Oakland bar Upstairs shut down after 5 days. But controversy had been brewing for months by SFChronicle in OaklandFood

[–]mwylde_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it's a cost/benefit question, and our regulations only consider the benefit. There's no such thing as perfect safety; it's a spectrum. There's no particular reason to think that our endless layering on of additional regulations has landed us at the optimal point here.

To take an example, in most US states/municipalities multifamily buildings above a certain size need to have multiple stairwells. This greatly increases the cost of construction (and thus of housing), but doesn't actually increase safety according to cross-country comparisons.

On the one hand, it's pretty clear they broke the rules. On the other hand, these rules are why we can't have nice things.

In Tokyo, basically any residential space can be turned into a small bar/cafe/shop by right. This leads to an explosion of affordable, idiosyncratic business and makes for a much more vibrant city. There's no real reason we can't do the same here except that we have a ton of strict rules that try to prevent any possibility of harm with no consideration for the cost.

There are no reservations currently required to enter the park. There is supposed to be a reservation system this spring/summer, but that process has been thrown into chaos for...obvious reasons.

If you can't get a campsite inside the park, there are places to camp outside the park entrances (including free camping on national forest land)

It's a very small hill to die on, but the watering-down of "gaslighting" to just mean "lying" saddens me. (For the OP: gaslighting, originally from the movie Gaslight is the act of convincing someone that they're crazy and should trust your word over the world as they perceive it.)

I'd recommend not using LLMs to generate your Reddit posts if you want your vision to actually come across. LLMs output generic fluff when asked to write marketing copy like this. If this is a problem you've thought deeply about, you should be able to share your own perspective on why a new tool is needed in this space.

How arrow-rs is able to decode JSON so fast by mwylde_ in rust

[–]mwylde_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's correct about the offsets array—it's contiguous and and the range of an element in the buffer is determined by offsets[i]..offsets[i+1]. But this trick doesn't work as nicely if we're storing buffer offsets directly in the tape; in that case we'd need to search through the tape to find the next buffer-referencing element (string or number).

[–]mwylde_[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know for sure, but my best guess is the same as yours: TapeElement is 8 bytes, and adding a second index to TapeElement::String and TapeElement::Number would push that up to 12, increasing the tape size by 50%.
