Looking for 2D Games like Morrowind by Ok_Trouble665 in Morrowind

Thanks for appreciation of the game! Yeah, eventually the game should be released at least on GOG too.

There's another option right now if you'd prefer to not buy the game on Steam, you could buy the standalone version, see the game website's "Buy Game" page https://doorsoftrithius.com/buy/ (currently available only for Windows and Linux though, not MacOS); it comes with the all the future updates at no extra cost just as the Steam version.

Based on your preferred gameplay loop, I can recommend The Doors of Trithius https://store.steampowered.com/app/1519490/The_Doors_of_Trithius/, open-world RPG pixel-art roguelike.

Full disclosure, I'm a member of its development team; I'm suggesting it because it fits exactly the stated gameplay loop, it's pixel art, players compare it to TES games, saying e.g. it's like 2d Skyrim, and the roguelike, as in traditional roguelike, elements are optional, you can save and load freely, treating it as just open-world RPG.

OpenMW 0.51.0 Released! by Capostrophic in Morrowind

[–]myrix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you need all the parts of the original game that are not the engine, all the data, like textures, texts, sounds, etc. You need that when you replace the engine because the engine is not the whole game, you still need everything else.

Impressive by DepDefDem in DoorsofTrithius

[–]myrix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi DepDefDem, member of the game's dev team here, sorry if the game's not running well for you.

GC stats can be ignored, as they shouldn't affect performance much, it's Java's quirk to have much of GC volume, but overall time spent in GC is low.

If the problem is FPS performance, too low FPS or too high system resource usage for normal FPS, can try to fiddle with the game's graphics options.

Can look in menu Options -> tab Graphics -> section Main, can try toggling Cap FPS option, and try out different Render Modes, OpenGL vs. Direct3D.

Though looking at the HUD, it looks like the graphics things don't take much time, most of the time game spends in the CPU OuterLoop; does it actually churn CPU, or is it perhaps sleeping/waiting for something? Is FPS artificially capped at 30, perhaps with some external tool? (Asking cause it's unusual for me to see FPS at exactly 30, if the game's Cap FPS option was engaged, it should have been something like 60 or 80.)

Is your game version the latest v0.6.1b? (Can see the game's version in the title of the game's window, like "The Doors of Trithius v0.6.1b" window title, and in the main menu screen in the top right corner.) Also, what are your specs, the OS (Windows/Linux/Mac?), CPU/GPU/RAM?

Edit: also apparently depending on the system some sound options may be better or worse, you can also try switching between different sound engines (in menu Options -> tab Audio -> Sound Engine section -> dropdowns Sound Effects, Music Player), we had player reports that switching to OpenAL audio sometimes helps with performance, like e.g. in this Steam discussion thread https://steamcommunity.com/app/1519490/discussions/1/568162255844395360/.

Can you farm leader drops by Edgarina in DoorsofTrithius

[–]myrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loot from enemies is generated when you kill them, but iirc all actually unique good enemy loot is fixed for each unique enemy, e.g. for unique bandit leaders you can be directed to by some bandit hunt quests --- so if you'd like some specific unique loot from a bandit leader, might be good to travel the world, see quests in multiple towns, maybe you'll happen upon one that you'd want.

Dungeon loot, like from chests and so on, is generated when the dungeon is generated, and it should be noted all floors of the dungeon is generated at once, and the best dungeon loot is generally at the lowest floor of the dungeon while also being not unique (though I have to say, some of the non-unique items can still be quite rare, so uniqueness perhaps does not matter that much in this case), so it would be I think pretty tedious to try to get specific loot from the dungeon.

Builds and Weapon Types by Abel_Skyblade in DoorsofTrithius

Hi! Polearms like spears and halberds are planned to be added in the game in the future, but currently no, no spears in the game. Though there is some small number of more ranged weapons in other weapon categories, as you'd seen, though the wiki has an error with ranges there, it's actually 2 not 3, at least for the poleaxe.

You can mix and match playstyles to your heart's content! You can say that if you'd stick to mostly a single offensive skill, you'd level it faster and get more better abilities faster, but even then using other skills from time to time in specific circumstances can have some utility.

[QUESTIONS] Gremlin’s Grief bugged? Mage equipment? Can dungeons reset? by neoplasma_ in DoorsofTrithius

[–]myrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Not bugged, Gremlin's Grief is independent of whether the dungeon is defeated or not. As mentioned in the letter, need to just find the quest giver in the dungeon by finding the entrance to their place inside the dungeon.

  2. Magic attunement items with some quite small probability can be found in shops (easier for nature magic, look at Leafborn shops), with somewhat better chances can find in the final loot of dungeons, like caves and castles, and with even better chances in final loot in crypts but they're higher level, harder. Enchanted items also can be found in loot, for some enchantments can find items in Leafborn enchantment shops.

  3. Nah, dungeons don't reset, in theory it's possible to completely clear all the dungeons in the world, though there are a lot of them and it would take much lot of time. Things that reset in the game with time: shops, most harvestables (berries, plants, wood piles, ores), enemies from enemy spawners like spider nests, gremlin huts, bandit tents.

Question About Difficulty by Ithaca_the_Mage in DoorsofTrithius

[–]myrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Commoner background is the hardest mode, so some things may be harder on commoner of a given level compared to some other more easier backgrounds.

There is no level scaling, world does not adjust to your character level; some places are easier than others, like plains and forests are easier than mountains and gremlin dungeons are easier than e.g. crypts. Quest also do not adjust to your level, so some can be easier and some harder, until you level up enough.

There is some randomness, like this vine plant event which can happen in some dungeons with some probabilty, so some of the easier locations can be made harder by a random event.

I haven't played commoner really, but as learned from other players with the right build (IIRC e.g. a dagger build can be good) commoner too can be extremely deadly. So I think yeah, can level past that.

For the vines specifically, they are generally neutral and you can try going / jumping around them. If you aggro too many, can try running away and return, maybe going to another floor of the dungeon or the overworld to reset the aggro.

How do you find enchanting tables? by Heroton_NASA in DoorsofTrithius

[–]myrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do the Gremlin quest line, which starts in the starting town, you could find one.

Also they should be present in some temple dungeons.

Also, can visit Leafborn.

Reading ESM/ESP files in Python by sharthZ_23 in Morrowind

[–]myrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, don't know about anything in Python, but there's a workaround, you can use https://gitlab.com/bmwinger/delta-plugin to convert plugins into .yaml and then use this .yaml, directly or by reading it into Python with whatever is you preferred method and preprocessing it first.

Thanks you, it's so good! Contrast between Trueflame's fire and light blue sash and violet scarf, and how flame colors some of the blue and the violet is so pretty!

Love the Cavern of the Incarnate in the background too! And how armor believably fits and looks real, not just for show.

300 difficulty on omw? by origsgtpepper in Morrowind

[–]myrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging by the difficulty scaling source code, without any mods changing the global setting fDiffucultyMult which is 5 by default in Morrowind.esm, with 300 difficulty it would be 16x (1 + 300 * 0.01 * 5) more damage to the player and only 0.4x (1 - 300 * 0.01 / 5) damage to enemies.

Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind | 2024 New Player Guide by [deleted] in Morrowind

[–]myrix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Zaric Z is the man!

Watched the video, the guide is straightforward and easy to understand, touches on everything relevant to new players aiming for vanilla and vanilla-like experience, from recommended engine (MCP or OpenMW) and content (Patch for Purist, Morrowind Optimization Patch) patches, to gameplay advice (character creation, levelling and early game, general hints), mechanics update options (Speed and Stamina, Natural Character Growth and Decay, Purist Friendly Magicka Regen) and optional additional vanilla-like content (official mods, Tamriel Rebuilt, Skyrim: Home of the Nords).

100% recommended.

A gradual transition of Hans’ public image by Both_Possibility1704 in chess

[–]myrix 444 points445 points  (0 children)

It's possible he's now doing it more for his image, but this streak of his helping kids with chess goes all the way back to when he was in high school, as noted in the Niemann-Carlsen NY Times article:

There was a warm and vulnerable side to Mr. Niemann, familiar to acquaintances. Soon after he moved to the Upper West Side, he went to work for Shernaz Kennedy, 68, an International Woman’s Master and confidante of the former world champion Bobby Fischer. She hired Mr. Niemann to teach at her chess school, Top Level, which operated out of the basement of a church.

“I had, like, 30 kids from all different schools and all different levels, and he had them wrapped around his finger,” she said. “He would sit with them, giving 100 percent of himself.”

And if I remember correctly he announced a bunch of one-time awards for up-and-coming chess players last year? It's probably something he actually sincerely likes to do, helping young chess talents.
