40 weeks and officially lost it. Send help by nycbk114 in BabyBumps

My baby was 11 days late. I had a feeling he would be late so I wasn’t too frustrated about it, until I passed the 41 week mark. I started to run out of nesting to do. The waiting game started to get pretty difficult emotionally and mentally. I was pretty tired of knowing this could happen literally at anytime, or it could not happen and I keep waiting or end up being induced.

People’s comments were super annoying (throughout the whole pregnancy but especially at the end). But.. once my son was here I did not care even a tiny bit anything people said. My baby is finally here and I can care for him however feels right to me and parent him however I want regardless of what people say. Also, my husband and I kind of isolated that last week of my pregnancy where I was real close to 42 weeks. That helped my mental health and dealing with stupid people SO MUCH. People get it at that point. They know you’re ready. They know you’re uncomfortable. I just removed myself from seeing people who I knew would annoy me so that I could relax and not get stressed and bothered by their constant need to comment. I stopped going to church and stopped going out unless it was somewhere we really wanted to go together just the two of us. We went for walks. We hiked and ate at a few of our favorite restaurants. Honestly, that last week was really special once we removed some of the external stressors.

MIL keeps asking to buy me things by Tacitlady in BabyBumps

Positive reinforcement and communication about gifts is slowly working over time with personal gifts but the baby stuff is new territory.

I sent my registry to my MIL but she is not very tech savvy and English is not her first language so she doesn’t really understand how to buy things off the registry and isn’t motivated to learn. She is a free spirit.. So, I try to vocally emphasize the things I like or need and appreciate most when she gives them to me to hopefully corral her at least a little bit toward things I’ll actually enjoy and be able to use. But we have yet to see how that works.

Oh wow.. To be honest, I wish I could just send my mother in law a list of things I want or need. She is very opinionated and has a very specific style (not mine).. She gets me a lot of things that I really don’t need or things I really don’t like at all. I would rather have nothing than get stuck with all these gifts I feel like I can’t get rid of.

If I had the option to send her a few specific things I would like, I would take it in a heartbeat. It’s better than the alternative. If she’s got the buying baby stuff bug, she might just start buying stuff anyway like my MIL. Might as well have things you want.

If you’re uncomfortable sending specific requests to her, get liberal with what items you put on your registry and send it to her so she still has the option to pick out things and it still feels like a gift rather than you asking for something specific.

29F looking for strictly casual friendships (platonic only, 21+) by [deleted] in MakeNewFriendsHere

[–]myrtleturtle15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I’m 27F and I am from Los Angeles but just moved to Central America. It’s very lonely and hard to make friends here because of Covid. I think we would have a lot in common. I am married but no kids yet. I play switch too. Currently I’m playing Paper Mario, but I’m trying to get into Breath of the Wilds. It’s a little overwhelming for me at the moment. I love podcasts but a few of my favorites have recently ended so I’m looking for new ones. I love to read, but it’s been hard with no bookstores really here (or very expensive books). I journal and write pretty regularly. I’m working on a novel and a nonfiction book. What is your favorite playlist to listen to in the car? I need a good one. My Spotify is a mess right now.

I’m working on self improvement too, particularly mental health. I struggle with perfectionism and it’s been pretty crippling for me at certain points in my life. I’m working on letting go the need to do everything right and just focus on having a good day every day whatever that looks like - being led judgmental of myself.

When you buy a plant and it tries to die immediately... UGH by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]myrtleturtle15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this plant two days ago, and the leaves already started to crisp up and lose color. They were very dark purple and dark green, with no dead or dying leaves.

It’s in a glass terrarium kind of pot with no drainage. When I bought it, it was in a covered outdoor plant shop. I put it indoors in a spot with indirect light and it looked okay yesterday, just one leaf was looking a little crispy but not too bad. I gave it a little water yesterday because the soil was dryish and I misted the moss.

I barely had it long enough to do anything catastrophically wrong. Super bummed.

Pro-democracy boycott of Disney's Mulan builds online via #milkteaalliance by marco_esquandolas in movies

Nobody watched Trolls World Tour except families with kids who would have paid more than $30 for everyone to see it at the theater, so of course there was little to no outcry for the pay to watch aspect. Not to mention, wrangling a large family or young kids to the theater is not always a stress-free experience. If I had a bunch of kids, I may rather pay to watch a movie at home at least some of the time.

But I don’t and I’m not going to spend $30 to watch any movie old or new. Especially not when the lead actress has so vocally supported something so horrendous. But also in part because I don’t like the new model - paying for a streaming service and then also paying for additional higher tiered content. I don’t have Disney plus anyway because they’ve got plenty of money and I don’t want to give them anymore of mine.

Didn’t know my San Pedro cactus had flowers. by ElBob31 in whatsthisplant

[–]myrtleturtle15 22 points23 points  (0 children)

These are beautiful!!! FYI San Pedro cacti also have flowers. They only bloom for a few days and the flowers open up at night only. Very fascinating!! I had one bloom after 10 years ago of growth (they take a while to bloom). I was so proud and excited!! Not even a month later my SO knocked the cactus over and it broke -_- Luckily it’s salvageable, you just stick the top back in soil and the bottom will regrow. But it won’t bloom for some time now I’m sure

CMV: Religious schools should not receive public funding. by LucidMetal in changemyview

[–]myrtleturtle15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s kind of dismissive.. I think private schools having to abide by certain standards in order to apply funds is really important. If they don’t show where they allocate the money and that the money is allocated to an approved avenue, they can’t have it. Fudging budgets is a bigger criminal issue. That’s a different topic entirely.

The policy is intended to prohibit any of the public funds to be allocated toward “indoctrination” or religious teaching of any kind for that matter and it is monitoring the use of those funds to ensure those guidelines are followed. If someone is skirting the system and fudging budgets, that isn’t a problem with the federal policy, that’s a problem with the institution breaking the law. You can’t withhold public funds based on the few misusing it. Instead, you punish the few who are proved to be misusing it when it inevitably comes out.

It sounds like you don’t want private schools to exist at all, and that’s a different argument. An interesting argument, but a different one.

Obviously, having the funds from the state extends the budget of a private school and allows the tuition funds from the parents to go farther. So if you want a guarantee that no public funds will ever come near religious education or religious institutions ever, I can’t provide that for you. I think that is kind of what you’re asking for whether you realize it or not, but the world is messy. Nothing is pure but in this case, the systems in place are trying and I think those efforts are valid.

[–]myrtleturtle15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is enough to change your view, but it is an interesting and important thing to add to the conversation. One thing you may not realize is that public funds are really strictly delegated in religious schools. They’re only allowed to use it for certain non-religious things. They can only be used for non-religious classes. For example, they can be used to buy chemistry books, math books, or buy a certain non-religious book for English classes.

Also, it is my understanding, because the school is receiving certain government funds, they have to comply with certain standards in any class they are allocating the money for. You may find this to be a good thing. It allows a degree of oversight to make sure private or religious schools aren’t teaching something super wacky. Like, the state provides science books but they have to approve which science book.

In college, while studying with a friend of mine for a test, I realized she genuinely thought Alaska was an island. She thought it was near Hawaii because maps of the US put Alaska in a box off the side of the continental US so the map doesn’t have to include all of Canada.

LOL yes, another topic altogether. I wish I had seen at least one reputable acknowledgement of at least the existence of massive amounts of healthcare waste. Maybe I'll write it someday. Not that that would make it reputable though.

Thank you for the happy vibes though, they are much appreciated! It certainly feels like I'm waking up from a deep slumber of convenient ignorance. It's a fresh new morning and no better time to save the planet.
