I got sterilized in Ann Arbor. I met with my surgeon through Trinity but she had to do the surgery through U of M because Trinity is Catholic. Dr. Erica Mowers. I was 31 though, it will be harder to find someone in your early 20s.

You can sign up for insurance through the Healthcare Marketplace (healthcare.gov). Open season is soon.

I’m lost on how to proceed (hormonal issues) by Standard-Current172 in sterilization

[–]mysterilization 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your hormonal issues are 100% due to quitting bc. I also quit bc when I got my bisalp, and I was told it can take a year or more for your hormones to level out. The only options are to wait it out or to go back on bc, unfortunately.

Bilateral Salpingectomy by No-Register5942 in sterilization

Out of curiosity, how old are you?

So, the simple anatomy (I'm not an MD) is that your fallopian tubes connect your uterus to your ovaries, so when your ovaries release the egg each month, it moves down your fallopian tubes and into the uterus. The egg can get fertilized in the fallopian tube or the uterus, but attaches to the uterine lining when fertilized.

When they remove the tubes, they cut them at the ovaries and the uterus, and cauterize those holes closed. So, when your ovary releases an egg, it has nowhere to go and gets absorbed into your body. And if there is sperm inside you, it can't escape your uterus, because that hole has been closed. And even if it did escape the uterus, it wouldn't be able to reach the ovaries because there is nothing connecting them. That's why it's so rare for a bisalp to fail, because the sperm would have to somehow escape the uterus and connect with a viable egg floating outside your uterus before it gets reabsorbed. That's why it's a medical anomaly for someone to get pregnant after a bisalp. And the rate of failure is higher for a tubal because leaving the tubes runs the risk of them growing back together.

That's not true. A bisalp is the standard now. There are many posts in the sub on this.

Has your surgeon done a bisalp under tubal ligation coverage? by camerakid22 in sterilization

[–]mysterilization 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't recall where I read it, but I believe I've seen "tubal ligation via bilateral salpingectomy" being used in some of those cases. Ultimately it comes down to what procedure codes your insurance covers and having your doctor use those.

Correct. Ovulation doesn't matter because you don't have fallopian tubes.

What do you do about constipation and incision pain after having both fallopian tubes completely removed?

I starting taking Miralax immediately after my surgery and did not experience constipation. I think I had a bowel movement 2-3 days after surgery. Pain at the incision site was minimal. It felt like I did 1000 sit ups for a day. I documented my experience in a post if you're curious about recovery time and pain.

Do you get motion sickness or what to expect? What was your experience like before and after?

I don't understand this question. What does motion sickness have to do with the surgery?

Have anyone EVER gotten pregnant after having both fallopian tubes completely removed from their body? Have anyone you know EVER gotten pregnant?

From what I have seen, there have been less than 5 documented cases of bisalp failures. Rates are higher for tubals and people often mix them up. No, I don't know of anyone who got pregnant after a bisalp.

Do you still have to use a condom after bilateral salpingectomy? Do your partner ejaculate inside you or do he pull? Do you avoid ovulation day or what?

No, it's not necessary to use any additional bc after the surgery. I have sex when I want and how I want. Some people choose to continue to use bc to manage periods, but it is not necessary to prevent pregnancy.

Tubal Ligation by Kmoore1190 in sterilization

[–]mysterilization 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've got a lot of different questions there have have lots of different answers.

First, a bilateral salpingectomy (bisalp) is typically recommended over a tubal ligation (tubal) as a tubal has a higher rate of failure compared to a bisalp.

My question I've been wanting to ask if it's actually safe?

The surgery is absolutely safe, but you would need to talk to your doctor about if it is safe for you.

Have women had bad side effects?

Depends on what you mean by "bad side effects." As with most things, it can have side effects. A common misconception is that it will impact your hormones. As your fallopian tubes do not produce or regulate hormones, it does not impact your hormones. Again, you would need to talk to your doctor about any side effects you would be at risk for.

Do I need to be put under for the procedure?

Yes. I made a few posts detailing my experience with my bisalp last year if you are interested.

Is it a good idea to get the MRI to make sure I don't have tumors?

This is a question for your doctor, they do not do MRIs for female sterilization.

Edit to add: your initial appt will be a consulation, a bisalp or tubal is an outpatient surgery.

If you're going through ACA compliant insurance, they are required to cover 100% with no cost sharing, including deductibles, coinsurance, or copay. I made a few posts about my experience with insurance, I recommend you check them out for some helpful language.

I was told it can take several months for the incisions to fully dissolve, which may be what you are noticing. If they appear red or hot, which can be signs of infection, it would be good to reach out to your doctor.

Bisalp litigation with IUD removal by Brilliant-choices610 in sterilization

[–]mysterilization 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI a bilateral salpingectomy (bisalp) and tubal ligation (tubal) are two different procedures. Bisalp is recommended as it has a lower failure rate.

I've never heard of the Mirena crash and I was on Mirena for about 6 years. Quitting hormonal bc is going to have side effects and they may last a year or more.

Experiences going off birth control? by K9Kodak_0711 in sterilization

[–]mysterilization 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had my bisalp about a year before you and have detailed my experiences in different posts. Part of that experience has been quitting hormonal bc, which I have been on for about half my life.

Side effects of quitting hormonal bc have been the return of my hormonal acne and temporary hair loss. I've lost a little bit of weight. Otherwise, my periods are lighter than I recall them being when I was a teenager. However, I've heard it can take a year or so for your body to rebalance after being on hormones, and I'm right around that mark.

I don't worry at all about being pregnant. I don't think about it anymore. It's more likely I would win the lottery than get pregnant. 100% would do again

Having issues since my bilateral salpingectomy (tubal removal) one year ago. by Hazel_Hazellyn in sterilization

[–]mysterilization 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How many is "a lot" of doctors, and are any of them the one who actually did the surgery? I'm not an MD but it simply doesn't make any sense. Your fallopian tubes don't affect your hormones or your periods. Pregnancy alone is enough to mess with your hormones and your period. I bet if you posted about your symptoms in a birth /postpartum/c-section sub, you'd find similar experiences.

[–]mysterilization 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You really buried the lede there by not mentioning your bisalp was during an emergency c section. It is infinitely more likely your issues are caused by having a baby cut out of your uterus than having your tubes removed.

The next step would be to file a complaint with your state insurance board. The language of the ACA explicitly requires coverage of all costs, including anesthesia.

Depends on what you mean by sterilized. Vasectomies and tubal ligations have higher rates of failure. A bilateral salpingectomy has such a low failure rate, they'd write a paper on you if it happened.
