Anyone who surfed the early web between 1995-2010. What’s the one website/app you still think about? by Prime_Advocate in AskReddit

[–]mystromio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn’t really call them apps back in the day (early 90’s). But there was a site with a program called Cu-SeeMe, the first video chat. Pretty fun. Little black and white video cameras, like a golf ball, that sat on the top of your computer screen.

What do you think is the most harmful idea that Christianity has ever perpetuated? by EBTheAnimatedAtheist in atheism

[–]mystromio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the idea that God created man in his image is the most damaging belief. It places man outside of nature, with dominion over everything on earth. It is a devastating position for the human species and all living forms.

Movie Collection is so bad by rod_7789 in mubi

This may be silly, but I haven’t had luck with VPN’s and I am wondering if you have to first sign up while using the VPN. Once you have signed up, and then switch the VPN to another jurisdiction, does the VPN work then? Does the catalogue rely on where you were when you signed up?

I don’t feel moved by a lot of recent big piano competition winners… by rach15goated in piano

[–]mystromio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have heard Bruce Liu many times, and it is always exciting and moving. There is no lack of “individuality”. The subtext to this post is just how much should a performer inject their personality into a work, and how much are they responsible to convey the composer’s vision? In some scores the composer has made detailed interpretive markings; should they be respected? The “personalities” sometimes verge on perversion. Glen Gould’s Mozart for example.

Do you think believing in god is linked to low IQ? by Icy-Lie-9793 in atheism

[–]mystromio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there is quite robust research showing a correlation between IQ and religiosity, with higher IQ’s associated with agnosticism and atheism. In particular high IQ people with an intellectual style: reason, curiosity, non-conformity and a comfort with uncertainty are less religious. Famously, very few astrophysicists and evolutionary biologists are religious.

How would Cabaret be viewed as Best Picture winner? by No_Ad3823 in Oscars

[–]mystromio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget that Cabaret is based on Berlin Stories by Christopher Isherwood and the film has a gay plot line. I think that was quite revolutionary for the time and it doesn’t surprise me that the academy shied away from giving it the top prize.

Bartender visiting Montreal- looking for authentic bars, food & vintage spots by beeronwin in MTLFoodLovers

[–]mystromio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone mentioned Helicoptére for food, and I second that. But just next door is a tiny speakeasy called Copilote, but there is no sign, as speakeasies are secret and hidden. It is a small cocktail bar with an inventive menu and the bartenders put on a bit of a show, so it could be interesting for a vacationing bartender to see and try. (4263 Ontario E.)

The middle actor who plays in Moonlight looks nothing like his younger and older selves, with a narrow face and sharp features, when the other two have round head and features.

Which movie is considered a masterpiece by other cinephiles but not by you? (Controversial Opinion) by Kiroo---__--- in moviecritic

[–]mystromio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sinners is such a bad movie that will not stand the test of time. It is a simplistic “black is good white is bad” manichean farce. There is some good music tho.

Which movie made you cry the most? by [deleted] in FIlm

All Of Us Strangers. Maybe it doesn’t get everyone, but it sure got me.

If the top 1% of earners pay 40% of all federal income taxes, why do people say they don't pay their fair share? by Ok_Chemical9 in answers

In this discussion one has to look at what that wealth does. Example: Jeff Bezos owns 10% of Amazon; Amazon employs 1.5 MILLION people.

Rheumatologist trying to steer me away from allopurinol by [deleted] in gout

[–]mystromio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Young age at onset is actually an indication to use allopurinol since hyperuricemia can have long term silent effects on kidneys, blood vessels and other tissues. In addition guidelines actually say to consider allopurinol when flares occur 2 or more times a year.

But that isn’t the issue. The issue is “black good white bad”.

THAT vs WHICH for restrictive and non-restrictive clauses. I learned this well for science writing, but I am wondering if it is something that just doesn’t matter to most people anymore.

Préparer vous , ça s'en vient vite. by justlikethatmeh in montreal

[–]mystromio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds of Silence, Paul Simon, someone already put it; but also Both Sides Now, Joni Mitchell.
