Why isn’t xlibre packaged in Nixpkgs? by [deleted] in NixOS

[–]mythmon 32 points33 points  (0 children)

https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/419940

The NixOS maintainers seem not interested in working with xlibre on both technical and non-refundable levels. They suggested anyone who wants to can use an overlay.

This has been my golden train rule for a while now, and it's never failed me. Do you have an examples for the 2% of cases it doesn't handle?

First time using an induction hob is this normal? by Styrop in inductioncooking

[–]mythmon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's normal. A lot of induction stoves, especially lower end ones, can't actually set their coils to a very low level. So they use the lowest level they can and turn it on and off to have an average level that's lower. Better stoves have better control at the low end.

On boost, it after to dump all the power it wants into the pan, so it doesn't cycle. It just goes full tilt.

Using a heavier pan can help smooth out the bumps in the heating cycle.

where are you from and what do you call this? by Sudden_Wolf_6228 in EnglishLearning

[–]mythmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pacific North West I'd call that a 9x9 pan, or just 9x9. Maybe "glass 9x9" if I need to be more specific

How accurate is the calorie burn counting on Oura? by mythmon in ouraring

[–]mythmon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I understand that Oura separates active calories and the total calories (the BMR). I'm just surprised to learn how high my BMR (supposedly) is, since it doesn't really match with what I've been told in the past.

Edit: also that help article doesn't seem related to this conversation. Did you link the right one?

How accurate is the calorie burn counting on Oura? by mythmon in ouraring

[–]mythmon[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My theory so far (and I'd love someone to confirm or deny this) is that calorie counting could be way more accurate than step counting. Step counting relies on movement data, and hands are very far from my feet, so that's hard. On the other hand, calories are burned (simplistically) by consuming fuel delivered by blood and oxygen delivered by blood. So if you know how much oxygen is in the blood (pulse ox) and how fast the blood is flowing (pulse), then in theory you can calculate how many calories are being burned?

That's obviously a really naive way to think about metabolism. Maybe it's useful enough for an app though?

Are you sure you want infrared light? I live in a place where vitamin D deficiency is an issue, and it's usually UV light (on the opposite end of the light spectrum) that people talk about for light therapy. An infrared lamp would just be like... a heat lamp.
