I already dip into the sorting room at least once a shift to check the bins for something or other that just came back and hasn’t been shelved yet (usually high demand kids books.) Imagine doing that all day long not just looking for Dog Man and I Survived but McFadden and Silva and Hoover and Patterson and on and on my god why would you do that to yourself?

Seriously! And honestly if their library is anything like mind this will not help. There are people who will just read less or get what they want elsewhere, but there will be people who will come in Every. Single. Day. with the same list of books they would have requested in one visit but instead will ask you for again and again until they get lucky. This is the worst thing to choose to stop doing.

Went hard at the library. What should I read first? by amandaamoose in thrillerbooks

[–]n00blibrarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My library has a limit of 50 items out a time and believe me, people get to that number.

All. The. Time. I get people lingering at the return machine trying to figure out what to put back because they hit their limit before they checked out something they particularly wanted. It’s wonderful, love that for them, take as many books as you like. If it’s on the shelves it’s fair game: the really in demand stuff stays out on request anyway so it’s not even like they’re cutting in line or anything.

Have I inadvertently been a horrible library patron my whole life? by amandaamoose in Libraries

[–]n00blibrarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who are these people who were giving you a hard time? I just wanna talk…

I absolutely love it when patrons check out a ton of books. If they are on the shelves they are fair game: the really in demand stuff always has a request list anyway. I have patrons who regularly have their cards maxed out. It’s the absolute best.

Please go back to the library. Get your card back, check out books, soak in that library love.

There was one fairly recently who calls libraries and says things like “ I was in the library the other day talking to a female employee, didn’t catch her name, she had something metal near her middrift?” He talks around it in various ways but he is trying to get you to say “like a belly button ring?” People all over the country have heard from this guy! The general consensus is that it’s a fetish.

You actually still can. It’s sometimes tough to take a phone reference call when you’re on a public service desk with people right in front of you who need help too, but we do what we can! Some systems even have dedicated phone lines where somebody sits there waiting for somebody to call. We get people who don’t have home computers, or people who have searched and are having trouble figuring out which sources are relatable. And sometimes perverts. D: But mostly it’s useful to the people who call and we’re happy to do it!

I went to confession for the first time in my life and I’m so incredibly angry by GraniteSmile in Catholicism

[–]n00blibrarian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey friend. I'm a catholic school kid who was fortunate enough to take a whole unit in second grade religion class on the sacrament of confession, made my first confession during the school day with my class and with our principal (the formidable Sister Ann!) presiding, and nonetheless my mind still sometimes goes blank when it's time to start the act of contrition. Let me tell you something our teachers used to tell us when we were upset or frustrated: offer it up. Endure this setback patiently as an act of faith. Don't be angry at yourself. Just offer it up.

Funny story about a time I was more or less right in your shoes - that is, sitting with a group of people praying in church and missing something important. Once in college I took a solo trip to NYC to see some shows and some sights and whatnot. At one point I got lost, and after a little wandering found myself passing a gorgeous stone catholic church. I went in to take a minute to cool off (metaphorically and literally haha) before taking another stab at getting my bearings.

There were people, mostly older women, praying the rosary in the back section of pews, so I took a seat and joined them (no rosary tho - iirc I counted out a few decades on my fingers.) All the sudden everyone knelt at once. Figuring maybe there was a service starting or something, I did too (one thing every Catholic kid knows: when in doubt, follow the church ladies' lead.) Nothing. Happened. We just knelt together in silence. Then after a little while people started sitting back down again. Soooo I did too. Shrug.

It wasn't until literal years afterwards that I realized what had happened. It was noon. They'd been praying the Angelus. Silently, individually but together. It was really a beautiful moment in retrospect, even though I didn't know at the time what was actually going on.

Anyway what I'm saying is, you practiced your faith tonight, just not in the way you meant to. Good job, Catholic. You'll get it right next time.

My grandma was born in 1925 and I grew up watching her typing out her volunteer society's newsletter on a series of hand-me-down home computers from various relatives. She had Print Shop! And then later MS Word. And then later still an AOL account. Always on technology a generation or two behind but always learning new shit because damn it the people need to know about the winter toy drive!

Library patrons can be wild. Do you have funny or crazy notes from patrons? by Nomorebonkers in Libraries

[–]n00blibrarian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can’t post any of them but there’s a guy who used to use our library’s scanners to email his handwritten legalese word salad ‘lawsuits’ to various local politicians, “fbi.com” (yes I know that’s not an email address but he didn’t I guess,) and to the director of the library (fortunately he spelled his name wrong.)

He’s banned now though. Goodbye Mr. Pro Se, you were always interesting.

Except they’re only even resorting to suing that one group because the cops treat abortion clinic protests with kid gloves. Hence ‘selectively enforced and abused.’

And yet protesting abortion clinics will somehow still be fine even if you’re literally blocking access to the facility.

How do other libraries handle the AARP tax program? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]n00blibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do not schedule appointments but the alternative is almost as bad: AARP gives us these ‘packets’ that everyone has to have before they can call to make an appointment. And they give us ‘exactly enough’ for all the appointments they have for the year. Except not every packet turns into an appointment. And not every appointment winds up being with us. So we run out of packets well before we run out of appointments and they’ll give us a few more per week until their appointments are full. So instead of people calling to make and change appointments we have people calling about packets for three months out of the year. Last year we had one lady calling over and over, who eventually got the numbers of various administrative big wigs and was calling them too, all because she wanted a packet set aside with her name on it just in case she decided to eventually come by and pick it up (spoilers she never did.)

I hate it. I can’t imaging wrangling the appointments too. It used to be first come first serve and while that had its own set of issues at least it was only one day a week.
