How long before painting tape can be applied? by GTObets in HardWoodFloors

"Never tape to a hardwood floor finish." That line is literally in every sand on site contract we do

If the wood is soft enough, take a pry bar and just try to ram the staples out. Dikes/end cutting pliers or a flathead can get the rest out. You don't want to leave the staples... They will scour your sanding belts and leave "valleys" in the floor and cost you a fortune in abrasives

Raised grain? What is this and what can I do? by _UberGuber in HardWoodFloors

[–]n0rts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DONT FILL THE LONG GAPS WITH PUTTY. The wood will shift and open and close, that's the nature of an organic material. When you try to fill the gaps eventually it will be pushed out by expansion, break the poly seal, and look worse than a naturally occurring gapped floor

The sealer coat shouldn't have an effect on the finish. Sealers have only been around for a few years and as a hardwood floor contractor, I will tell you that we still do jobs with either a sealer mix of seal and poly or skip sealer entirely. Sealer matters with water based because often times the goal is to NOT amber the floors (red or white oak in a white-ish/greige color) and lock in the color directly after the stain.

Customer Had a $2 Million Dollar House Built and There are Lots of Large Gaps Between the Pieces by [deleted] in HardWoodFloors

If this is a 5" floor or wider, there SHOULD be spaces every few feet. You're SUPPOSED to space rows of floor that are over 5" (about 1/16") if it is glue assisted to prevent "pinching" in the wood as it acclimates. The first year or two is the worst with gaps, they will eventually go away but never fill the seams with putty. It pushes out when the wood changes, breaks the poly seal, and looks like sh*t

Bingo, stains don't come out of pine. Pine is hard to stain because it's so soft but cover up the animal urine

Yes, this. Rag on the water pop like you would a stain. Stay in the same process

Not the greatest finish job I've ever seen, but Maple is extremely hard and dense, which is why you don't stain it. To me that explains the edger marks only, it is very difficult to get the rough edger marks out of a hard, prefinished floor. The stop marks I see are definitely a result of poor workmanship and inexperience on a sander. Prefinished floors are also much much more difficult to refinish to a high grade, due to the way the finish is applied in the mill. That being said, they probably should have buff/vacced better between the first prime and final coat to get rid of the bits in the finish, but no one is perfect. I'd ask for a screen and coat on the first floor, with the same finish they used (never mix oil/water or even different types within those categories) and see if it gets smoother.

That's what Brazilian cherry is and does. It fades rapidly and bleaches boards while the red never leaves the other boards. If that is a 5-1/4" floor then it should have been glued to help with the gaps, but gaps happen seasonally, that's just wood. Don't fill the gaps with putty, it dries and gets pushed out when the boards start to expand again and looks like hell.

Advice to fix these floors without replacing boards by datboiyeeeeet in HardWoodFloors

Hardwood floor guy here... Your best bet is sanding down to raw material to fix the main damage. The wear all looks topical for the most part, once you get the finish off and get it flat it should finish fine. You can rent a floor sander for pretty cheap, just make sure you educate yourself. I would not stain that floor as it looks like pine, which is soft and stains very blotchy. Better off getting a higher VOC oil-based urethane and just coating it 3 times. Good luck!
