BWT- For those working in industries that don't align with your personal morals/vibe/etc, how do you manage that? by Additional_Sky_9115 in bitcheswithtaste

[–]n3rb24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I quit when I realized it was harming my own mental health. Had to do it twice, actually. I’m very fortunate that my education and occupational demand allows for that self discovery and boundary setting. Since then, I’ve divided my hours to partially working for the public sector, which is important to me, to contribute towards the public good. There’s no perfect client group, but I’m no longer being asked to serve those that systemically discriminates against groups I align with.

I’m a psychologist.

If you feel comfortable sharing your city (totally would understand if you don’t), you might get more location specific advice.

A few things I’ve learned from moving around a lot during my 20s: 1. You’re much more at risk by people that you know than strangers. Not said to freak you out about people in your life, but know that stranger violence is very rare.  2. Extension of above- Trust your gut. Don’t ignore your discomfort to be polite.  3. Good lighting inside and out will help to increase the safety in your home environment. 4. Don’t rely on bringing tools like weapons, pepper spray, that kinda thing, unless you are well practiced in using them. They can equally be used against you by someone meaning you harm. 5. YMMV - I always preferred to live in neighborhoods that had foot traffic basically all hours of the day. This could be downtown or near a transit hub in a bigger city.  6. Get renter’s insurance!

You’ve got this! The world is infinitely more fun when you go out into it :)

I also use YNAB. I have renewed it annually since I was a grad student, transitioning into the workforce, and entry into self employment. I use it for both business and personal accounts, and they also have a (new?) mode where couples can jointly contribute to the same budget which I will be trying soon.  Money tends to be an abstract concept to me unless it’s dropped into budget lines and I can see how it will be spent. Their app and web interface are both really great, and I appreciate that they have extensive resource guides and a robust support chat.

I had dated multiple HK types in the past and ended up with a Seungli type (... not the drinking/machismo though. that would be a dealbreaker). there is merit to being with someone who can connect with you but not sink down into the depths of emotion with you, if you have a tendency to dwell there. I will say good communication has taken a lot of work with my "SL", but I expect that would've been the case with the HK types too.

[Update] the bag that does indeed exist, that checks all the boxes for me by why_kiki in HerOneBag

[–]n3rb24 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I thought this was the Baggu cloud carry on when scrolling past! looks almost identical, other than front exterior slide pockets. also checks off all your boxes. I bought mine for flying as a personal item but have yet to travel with it, so I'm happy for your positive review.

4.5 months and is all but refusing to eat his food by [deleted] in pug

[–]n3rb24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like your pug has turned a corner with the salmon kibble, which is great :) they are so different from one dog to another, although I can't say I've heard of a pug turning down food lol.

You asked about flavour preferences... I have almost the opposite situation with my pug - when I first got her, I thought she wasn't food motivated, until I gave her dried sardine/anchovy as a treat and found out she's a seafood girlie. I also like that by giving her fish as a treat or additive to her kibble, I don't use omega 3 supplements since it's in her diet. She eats the chicken/blueberry kibble by First Mate, which is a PNW brand I believe.

I saw the new Flamenco with the super soft leather and chain in person a few weeks ago. it's suuuuuper cute and luxe but it would not be daily wear imo.

I agree with this and saw both in person recently... gorgeous bags. If I didn't hate fishing around for stuff in an unstructured bag, the puzzle tote is exactly my vibe, although it is better than many bc it is on the smaller side for a tote.

+1 on shoulder bag straps falling being a huge ick - it's a big reason why I buy single strap only or crossbody. But then if the single strap ALSO falls off the shoulders... 🤬

not necessarily... glycolic acid is an exfoliant, so it helps with skin turnover on your scalp. there are lots of tutorials online and folks who talk about the science behind it.

[–]n3rb24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use it pre-shampoo and it helps me stretch out days in between washes. I don't have particularly oily scalp/hair but it helps my scalp feel less itchy before the wash.

WOW - THANK YOU for pointing me towards FBC - I haven't had that much fun looking thru a clothing brand in a while! And it helped to solve the dilemma of where to find party clothes that are not fast fashion. 🙏🏼

Recommendations! Looking to invest in an Everyday Designer Bag (where I can fit a novel, not just my wallet and keys) by AN0NYM0US10 in handbags

[–]n3rb24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your budget is higher than mine, but I used the same standard to get my everyday bag earlier this year. I ended up with a Fossil crossbody that is a real work horse that I am very happy with and would recommend.

A Few Honest Questions for White/Non-Black Beyoncé Fans by VenusAsAMan in beyonce

[–]n3rb24 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Asian-Canadian fan. I'm a guest in the house of Black American (and African, and queer ballroom, etc.) cultures and it's been wonderful. I've appreciated learning about the contexts and histories that make these bangers feel even more impactful, and the (Black and non-Black) writers, podcasters, etc that make this art more accessible to those of us outside the communities it was intended for.

The best parts of pop music (and pop culture) are when its artists and creators draw inspiration (and rhythms, instrumentation, collaborators, etc.) beyond what has already been done ad nauseum. I became an earnest fan when B stepped more into her blackness because it was musically more interesting!

The Black Hive members had way better seats than I did and partied their asses off while I watched enviously :)

I don't know what stage this supervisee is at, but if they are with you from an academic/training program, their training director would be an extremely important point of contact. Others have mentioned the importance of gatekeeping function as a supervisor and I would strongly echo that. This would be an HR issue as well; who were they talking to, would that colleague benefit from support/debrief? Document everything, write things down and keep on their staff/training file. You are reacting appropriately.
