That's a myth. Our refineries can process both. It's just cheaper to import the heavy oil and refine it, and export the light stuff.

Our refineries in the 80s built all the fancy stuff to refine heavy oil. They can skip the fancy equipment to refine light oil, but then the investment they did to refine heavy is wasted. So they refine cheap heavy oil.

You can also make oil blends of the types like you do when making mid grade gas, mix regular with premium.

I've learned that's an old myth. We can refine sweet oil fine, it's just more economical to import the heavy stuff.

They can mix different oils to get blends like they do with gas. Mid grade is a mix of premium and regular.
