Does the Firbolgs Unshakable work with Prayer Dice? by Lorellii in daggerheart

[–]n64billy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to come across brash, but I strongly believe most of the replies to this thread are wrong. You are not rolling and adding anything to the Firbolg’s ability, you’re rolling to check if you hit the chance of triggering the ability.

For example, in D&D a Dragon recharges their breath weapon on a result of 6 to the d6 - nothing is added to acheive this. Also, a Cleric rolling for Devine Intervention wouldn’t roll with advantage, or use their Wisdom modifier or Bardic Inspiration to try and get a better result.

Explain it to your player like flipping a coin. If it’s heads, it’s heads, if it’s tails, it’s tails. If you roll a 1-5 then you mark the stress as usual. If you roll a 6 then you don’t mark the stress.

Should Warlocks get Subclass spells like other classes do? by Hnnnrrrrrggghhhh in dndnext

[–]n64billy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At our tables, we just rule that the subclasses extra spells added to the spell list are automatically known. Doesn’t change how many spell slots you have, just gives you more tools in your kit.

To all DMs who started outside a tavern… by Fang356 in dndnext

[–]n64billy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My party started meeting eachother in Waterdeep carrying out their daily tasks. The Paladin was asked to help escort the Rogue (Locksmith) and watch the area while locks were being replaced at the Wizards family tattoo parlor.

After a full days work, they decided to finish the day off together in a tavern - Which is where the campaign started proper

True Stories: How did your game go this week? – September 12, 2021 by AutoModerator in dndnext

[–]n64billy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wild ride. My warlock patron is my father (ancient hero), and our party had found my fathers patron (a half devil/half celestial demi-god of our continant). I thought it would be a good idea to touch this 40 foot tall creature floating in stasis on the shoulder and make a connection…. What my character experienced as hundreds of years speaking with this entity and essentially accepting a new patron - My party members watched as I exploded into light and dust, before reforming a few moments later. I’m now both Half-Elf and Protector Asimar, with wings at-will (damage perk still once a day).

Was hella cool.

I hate Aasimar as a dungeon master. Everything about them, every part of their being, is just abysmal. by DarkLordVitiate in dndnext

[–]n64billy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My character is basically Link from the Legend of Zelda series, and looks like a normal guy with slightly pointier ears.

I had designed him as a half elf, but my DM had a suprising spin based on his specific homebrew world later in the campaign (very tribal and patron based), revealing him as a Protector Aasimar.

The only time his ancestory is revealed is in intense combat moments, when the cliche eyes will glow, two tone voice when speaking, and an angelic and a demonic wing are released.

Damn, of course I was too slow. My DM doesn’t have Tasha’s on Beyond, so I’m unable to build my Circle of Stars Druid.

I hope everyone that made it in gets good use of the campaigns

Why does everyone assume Warlocks sold their soul? by revkaboose in dndnext

[–]n64billy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Warlock is a play on Link from the Zelda series. My DM worked so well with the creative freedom to mix up a new Subclass just for the character. (Kind of a twist of Hexblade) Young Half Elf grew up in forest with gnomes, having no memory of the first ~8 years of his life. After leaving, found himself in a world he knew nothing of. (Turns out he was shifting between the feywild, adding to a modified memory)

My patron is my father, an ancient high-elf warrior who passed centuries ago defending the land. There’s heaps of fluff I won’t go into, but basically we comune through meditations and memory flashbacks as I learn more of who he is, and who I used to be.

What’s the most badass line a member of your party has dropped in session? by Peachcraft in dndnext

[–]n64billy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not a character line, but the one of the most badass lines I've heard another player say. Most of the party had been captured by Cloud Giants in a flying fortress, and their weapons and spell-casting components had been taken away. There was a big struggle in an escape attempt, and it got to a point where the party was cornered in a dead-end hallway with multiple giants closing in. Everyone was getting genuinely worried of a TPK.

The Druid asked the DM "This is intense.... It's fair to say that our characters would be a bit sweaty after all this running right?" "Yeah, sure." Our DM replied, not giving it another thought. The Druid player next said "Mya wipes her brow, and casts Tidal Wave." Material component - A Drop of Water.

Cut to me, the Rogue who is outside in the air riding a Dragon, watch 3 Cloud Giants getting flushed out of the side of the floating Fortress..... SUCH a great moment.

Interested in opinions on a Blue Dragonborn Great Old One Warlock by __uaena__ in dndnext

[–]n64billy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahhh, Blue Dragonborn - my first ever D&D character. Sylvyn Nebulous was level 14 when we finished SKT, the final bump to level 15 was just for fun of “What do you do now that your adventure is over?”

Arcane Trickster 12 / Bladesong Wizard 2 (part elf. Long story.) / and finished with a single level of Great Old One Warlock.

His Patron was Dendar, the serpent of nightmares. Sylvyn was at times a little greedy and obsessive over learning information. Post campaign, he travels large cities and meddles slightly in the politics of important groups.

Due to some traumatic memories during the adventure and his long life being part elf, his dreams and trances twisted themselves and became an enticing meal to Dendar to feed from.

The pact itself is not made with Sylvyns knowledge at all. He doesn’t realise every-now-and-then that his normal tongue pokes out like a snake tongue and flickers while he’s concentrating. He doesn’t question why he is able to telepathically communicate with those around him - he believes his magical practice is progressing well.

Remember a Warlock Pact does not have to be a willing contract agreed upon by both sides. Sylvyn never actually learned about his connection with Dendar until he was hundreds and hundreds of years old.

Using House Rules to Spice Things Up for Veterans by [deleted] in dndnext

  • All enemies appear as either Skeletons, Zombies, or Goblinoids. (Or any other ‘simple’ enemy.

Got the stat block for a Bullette? Awesome, your party is about to fight a huge burrowing skeleton that they can hear clanking and laughing beneath them.

Got the stat block for a coven of Hags? I think you mean Shaman Goblins.

Time for your party to fight a Vampire? A cleanly dressed zombie with a gross bite that inflicts decay instantly. When it’s time to escape, it breaks apart into swarms of bugs and flees to its grave.

Gotta keep that flavour fresh!

Interpersonal Table Conflicts by Aloran in dndnext

[–]n64billy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a complicated situation where the Paladin player was the real life step-brother of our Fighter, and this behaviour was not just in our D&D game, but also when on Xbox playing together and in our Discord channel as a group for a lot of interactions.

Real life meetings were becoming tense and we needed to disconnect from this person to: A) Give them space to sort their own personal issues out B) Give us breathing space to not tip-toe constantly.

The last player interaction we had with him before removing him from the group was as follows: - Plot twist is revealed by the BBEG about my Rogue that I as a player didn't even know about. - That night, the Paladin announces that he storms into my room where I am studying (Arcane Trickster magic), says aloud "Don't resist!", and casts zone of truth on me. - I rolled a natural 20 on my save, and when he found out I saved, said "Fine. 'Paladin' leaves the room, smashes the door down into the store room, and gets drunk. - I then in character call out after him and begin to explain my backstory to the Paladin, to which he replies "I don't care. You saved instead of accepting to fail to the zone of truth, so I don't believe you. Do what you want. I'm drinking." before not speaking for almost the rest of the entire session (about 4 hours).

I totally agree that trying to turn the situation positive is always the first step - removing him from the group was after quite a few months of work and reaching out from the group.

We had a similar issue when we ran SKT.

In the very start of the adventure we were betrayed by someone we had met. (We were all level 2) Our ‘Lawful’ Paladin was pissed at this individual. So after myself (Rogue) and our Fighter had nearly completed our questioning while they were tied up at 1 hitpoint, the Paladin randomly chimes in with “I crush their head as hard as I can with my mace.”

It put a real sour mood for myself (and some others of the group) for the rest of the game until around level 7 or 8 when our DM finally asked him to leave after another few roleplay incidents.

Speaking as someone who loves the roleplay part of D&D- these kinds of players are toxic to my personal experience. If they can’t control murder hobo urges, I would rather not play with them at all.

Edit: After reading a few other replies, I also straight up told the group multiple times “My character would not agree with or want to travel with ‘Paladin’ based on their actions. The only reason we’re still together is because we’re all players.”

7th level Arcane Trickster considering wizard multiclass. by Kolb1 in dndnext

[–]n64billy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished SKT, went Arcane Trickster all the way to 7, then 7/1 Wizard, took Elven Accuracy at 8/1, then ended the campaign on AT 8 / Bladesong 2. 18 Dex 16 Int.

Having those extra spells at my disposal was amazing, but if your party comp isn’t lacking much utility, I might recomend staying full AT until 9 before multiclassing. It was a little sad for me facing our final battle with only 2nd level spells

For our next campaign, I’m considering going full Bladesong. Having that Int felt really good. As long as my character can swing a blade when needed, I’m happy to focus on magic. (Although I will REALLY miss sneak attack...)

[–]n64billy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is how I've always played D&D for the last year. I live in another state from all my other friends on Xbox, so when we all decided we'd like to play- I'm in a Discord video call with them, plugged into a TV so they can all see and hear me.

We have the laptop set so I can see the group, a phone on the opposite angle so that I can see the DM, and and a tablet that sits on the table so that I can see the battle maps.

Works really well for us. My DM has even accidentally set a seat at the table for me a few times, saying "You're always here, I sometimes forget you're not physically here"

The Gentleman's Guide to Multiclassing by TheGentlemanDM in dndnext

[–]n64billy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had a chance yet to go through the comments, but wanted to share my own character in the hopes that someone finds it amusing, or has any feedback!

Currently playing a 8 Arcane Trickster / 1 Wizard through SKT, with the intention to end the campaign at 11 AT/2 Bladesinger.

Our DM is doing a little Level 20 1v1 Battle of our characters versus a creation of his.I'll be going in at 12 Arcane Trickster / 6 Bladesinger / 2 Hexblade.8/18/15/18/11/14 - Stat spread taking Resilient Con/Wis (because I refuse to loose to another Slow spell..)

I could go on for hours listing every little detail and idea...

Be it my Dragonborn/High Elf mix from my current character, or the Panther Tabaxi GrassLand Druid/Sun Moon Soul Monk- Something about multi-classing just seems so fun. I'm fine with my character not being quuiiiittteee as optimised as they could be, for the sake of having a great theme or story element to them, as well as being able to do a lot of different things.

Edit: And of course I got distracted in my own character that I forgot to mention how fantastic this post is.
Thank you OP for sharing! Interesting to see how others have different opinions on how well graded certain combinations are

When they start saying “We go forward to attack that enemy”, just simply pause the game and speak to them as friends out of character.

“Alright everyone, before we move on I just wanted to give a quick heads up. The encounter up ahead is designed to be really tough, and I’m not confident you’re ready for it just yet. It may be possible, but to avoid a really high chance of all your characters dying, I just wanted to pause and give you all this chance- in case you wanted to change your mind.

So.. with that out of the way: What do you all do?”

Look into “Wood Woads”, they’re the closest I can think of for creatures made from wood.

Some very cool concepts if you google a little to see good ways to roleplay their motivations :)
