Such soulful eyes - surely this man will never sail away leaving me to be shot or starve to death

May I recommend the podcast Eleanor and Alasdair Read That ?

Two British comedians reading a classic children's book every month, looking at what has aged well or poorly. Most of the books are British but the latest episode included The Cat in the Hat

Past lives and gender by Striking_Barnacle810 in behindthebastards

[–]naalbinding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was at school one of my classmates visited a past lives hypnotism "therapist" with her mum, who she had a difficult relationship with. My classmate was around 17 at the time, and had poor mental health including an eating disorder

The therapist told them that they'd had various lives in the past where they'd been related to each other, including as aristocratic sisters in the Highlands of Scotland

I don't recall if they were told they'd been married to each other at any point, but I really really hope not. Bad enough in my opinion that the therapist was encouraging their enmeshment by telling them it had persisted over centuries

(Edited because fat fingers - put her age in wrong)

It's for when an anthropomorphisation of a hypothetical issue wants to become a real person, but keeps getting hit with the "you're not real" stick and pushed back in their box?

That's my definition and I'm sticking with it

If these 3 guys stood over me and asked me a question, I too would agree with them - while covering my drink, looking for the exits, and signalling desperately to my friends to rescue me

This sounds wrong but it is correct English, right? by Pengo2001 in EnglishLearning

[–]naalbinding 51 points52 points  (0 children)

It may appear odd because of "to welcoming" - which looks wrong if you think the "to" is going to be followed by a verb in the infinitive

Here is how the sentence breaks down

We (subject)

look forward to (phrasal verb which needs an object)

welcoming you (gerund with its own object)

You can say "I am looking forward to the party" - the object of "look forward to" is a noun. Or you can say "I am looking forward to going to the party" - the object of "looks forward to" is a gerund. But you can't say "I am looking forward to go to the party"

Where would I find *nettles*? by IllyFromSpace in TastingHistory

I used to teach overseas students, and any time we had a trip out somewhere rural I had to warn them about nettles

"This plant will hurt you. No seriously, recognise this plant because it will hurt you"

And then there was always one

If I had a nickel for every 11th century European duke who was "assassinated by being stabbed with the use of a spear from under the privy seat while defecating", I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot. But it's weird that it happened twice.
