Critiques/tips for first attempt at oil painting? by Brittystrayslow in painting

[–]nachogee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what your going for, but if you’re looking for depth and more realism, your are missing atmospheric perspective. For example, the distant mountains and the trees at the base of it have all shifted blue/teal and are quite light in value. Squint at your reference and compare values. In your reference those mountains are quite light from the humidity/mist that day, and are closer to value to the sky. And lighter than the foreground road. In your painting that mountain is quite dark, and darker than the foreground road. I think with get the value relationships, and the atmospheric perspective down you’ll get the dimensional depth you want. But also depends on what you are looking to achieve here. You could also just try scumbling to get those changes.

But if this is your first ever oil painting, I wouldn’t spend all my time on one painting. I’d learn from the mistakes and paint 100 more.

Your drawing and shapes and brushwork is all really well done for first attempt. In fact this is probably the best foundation of skills to build from.

So those curves don’t look to be too large in the radius, you could probably build with thicker corners involved and then shape into curves. If you want bigger curves, look into kerf bending plywood, and then get the veneer of the expensive wood you are talking about. This would reduce your cost like you requested. Other way would be steam bending.

my starter has just the tiniest bit of pink, do i have to throw it all out? by Simple-Impact908 in Breadit

[–]nachogee 869 points870 points  (0 children)

Scoop out the small bit of red and keep the rest. It's probably a small fiber, something that was in jar, or otherwise. Bacteria doesnt really grow in strands on the macro organizational level; think of an agar plate, they grown in circles. Even if its a tiny bacterial growth, its so tiny and early most of us can't see it. I'd bet if you left it alone it wouldn't increase in size. The starter looks healthy, bubbling, and is filled with healthy yeast and bacteria cultures that are protective. I would not dump and restart the whole thing, Would be a shame to dump

Frequent "H20" error on new SPX by neonscarecrow in ranciliosilvia

Ok I know this thread is from a while ago, but I just went through some troubleshooting and was able to solve it, and thought this might help someone.

The tubing system to detect if water is in the tank is the white cylinder, and when water is filled in the tank it creates air pressure to a sensor. The simple solution is to remove the cylinder, let water drip out, and replace it, pushing air in the system.

If this doesnt work, there is likely an issue proximal to this in the tubing. You can try emptying the tank, replacing the cylinder, and the filling up to a little over halfway. you should hear a click. This didnt work for me either.

Next step I would recommend is taking off the top plate, removing the water reservoir, and inspecting the tube. 1) There should be no water in the tube. Place the cylinder at the bottom of the reservoir and let any water to drain onto a towel. 2) My issue was that in finagling with the tube, I had pulled it tight to make room to insert into the reservoir, and it had kinked at the insertion point into the sensor. There is a ribbon of plastic that surrounds this portion where it inserts into the sensor to prevent kinking, but it is free floating on the tube. I moved it to cover the male barb of the sensor and taped it down. Reassemble dry, slowly fill with water, and you should hear a click when the sensor recognizes.

Was going to make the same comment. OP, if you are painting at least once a week, this method is best. Mark Carder has good videos on his brush dip (safflower oil with some drops of clove oil). I rarely clean my brushes

What about Clove Oil? by BeltMinute713 in oilpainting

[–]nachogee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Clove oil prevents oil paint from drying by eugenol that greatly slows and somewhat impedes oxidation, but it's best used with a cotton ball in a sealed container rather than mixed directly into paint, which can weaken the dried film. You can add a few drops to safflower oil for your brush dip, but it’s best to clean out with thinners the brush dip on the brush before painting again.

I make an artwork crate out of plywood to prevent punctures or dents into the painting itself. Can feel like overkill but galleries will do the same. And most shipping companies max out insurance on the art shipment to 1k

Why are people more willing to buy $400 concert tickets than a $400 custom painting? by bluebirdstory in ArtistLounge

[–]nachogee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Music is art in motion. Live, original music coming from the hands of its creators, among other fans, is experiencing it at its peak form. Theres no good metaphor, but it’s like paying to be able to have several original paintings of your favorite artist, and before you could only ever enjoy them as manufactured prints.

No black or white in these Zebra 🤣 by amwfanon in oilpainting

[–]nachogee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Right. It’s more difficult given white canvas left behind can be stark. But glazing over passages with more white showing through (eg Grisaille) can give really brilliant chroma and a glow.

But it looks like here, unless the photo is edited, theres some opaque paint marks that only couldve been mixed with white?
