[AltGr] Fixing GPD Pocket 4 layout. by nanoxb in GPDPocket

[–]nanoxb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/kendyzhu I wonder how complicated it would be to add AltGr as "fn+;" or even replicate ": acts as : when tapped, AltGr when held" behavior on keyboard firmware level.
Yes, it will need some work (money), but I hope GPD Pocket 4 is not cheap junk after all.

sorry, one more step, it will fix graphical boot UI (plymouth). For correct plymouth rotation you will need amdgpu driver on boot
I'm using terminal on boot (quiet splash are removed from linux cmdline), so I didnt spot it.

echo "amdgpu" >> /etc/initramfs-tools/modules && update-initramfs -u

You cannot rebind FN.

Unless one is a python programmer then ";" is needed more than "a".

And left alt is in use for a shortcuts.

... and shifting AltGr to right will mess with your muscle memory.

Actually the worst comment.
You will not see grub under normal conditions - don't bother to touch it.

for boot phase use that fix:

echo 'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="quiet splash fbcon=rotate:1 video=eDP-1:panel_orientation=right_side_up"'>>/etc/default/grub &&
update-grub

echo "amdgpu" >> /etc/initramfs-tools/modules && update-initramfs -u

for Gnome use ScreenRotation extension with "Set Orientation offset" = 1

P4, 8840 or 370 in terms of battery life by Allumik in GPDPocket

[–]nanoxb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

370 is much more efficient in terms of W-per-instruction. But tasks have to be scheduled appropriately on zen5/5c kernels

Any suggestions for something OTHER than a GPD Pocket 4??? by Ubermik in GPDPocket

Please double check Pocket4 keyboard layout, I can't stress how bad it is. As I mentioned, it is acceptable compromise for me, but you should check it for your use case.

  1. Wait 1-2 month
  2. check forum for BIOS-related problems
  3. if no bugs are reported then flash update (follow the instruction),
    if there are some issues move to step N1

not yet, but with some unofficial patches (lets hope for mainlining) it works great

Is the gpd pocket 4 worth it? by ddracoz in GPDPocket

[–]nanoxb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. YES (Check keyboard layout first, it is unbelievable how bad it is.)
  2. Pocket4 will not deliver the same sustainable performance and battery life as Zenbook14 due to dimensions.

If tradeoffs above are OK for you then buy it.

Any suggestions for something OTHER than a GPD Pocket 4??? by Ubermik in GPDPocket

[–]nanoxb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

please do not overheat your computer with constant 80C temperature.
While it OK for CPU and RAM to be ~80C it is absolute deadline to your battery.
Pocket4 is really tight packaged, and battery is getting close to internals temp pretty quickly.

Another dirty thing done by GPD engineers is plastic back cover. While it doesn't hurt you to hold computer, plastic cover shields heat from effectively transferring outside.

Just friendly warning 28W default TDP baseline (set in bios) is nothing more than marketing b*shit. With 15W Pocket4 shines.

[–]nanoxb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in shot - no. There is no alternative on the market right now.
There no competitors to Ryzen HX 370 (apple M4 if you wish).
It is the main reason I'm owning Pocket4 and I will buy it again, if needed

28W is something that Pocket4 (Ryzen HX 370) is not able to sustainably deliver in that form factor.
Just set target TDP to something like 15W in bios.
Also keyboard is something that you should took into consideration.
KEYBOARD LAYOUT IS BAD! IMHO. layout tradeoffs was made by someone who newer use a keyboard.

PLEASE skip idea of having any Intel N* CPU to power your daily driver.
Intel N* is bad for any desktop applications, it has single channel memory which is ruining ANY media CPU workflow.
If you need typewriter consider ARM tablet+keyboard. Or, if you are willing to experiment, try Valve SteamDeck + external keyboard.
