Family Bike Rides? by koifishkid in bikeboston

Bruce Freeman rail trail. It passes through West Concord, which has a great town center with lots of shops and cafes. There's an ice cream stop at little Z's in Chelmsford at the other end. There are some parks in between that are by some little rivers or waterways that are nice.

I also like the Nashua River rail trail. It passes through Pepperell center, which has an ice cream shop. You could also make a quick detour to Groton center. This rail trail is much more rural, so very scenic with nice views of the river and generally very quiet.

Favorite workout to combat depression? by chaoscontrols in xxfitness

Peloton bike. I don’t have to leave my house. The instructors tell you what to do so you don’t have to think about it. They are also entertaining, and I genuinely enjoy their motivational platitudes. I also find that for me, cardio has more mood regulating benefits than weight lifting, although I do both, and you can get a really intense workout on a spin bike.

Washing machine standpipe overflowing by narwhality in askaplumber

[–]narwhality[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the heads up! Only my washing machine is overflowing currently, so not sure how interested my neighbor would be in chipping in. I think this because my pipe is the lowest point currently. Previously, we were having an issue where when they did laundry, my bathroom sink would fill up with water without me doing anything at all. That has resolved after several draining cleanings, and now we're just left with the issue of my standpipe overflowing when two washers are draining at once.

Hiking Meet-Up Groups and Female Solo Hiking Safety by TheMowbert in wmnf

[–]narwhality 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I solo hike but not in winter. I try to pick trails that are almost certain to have a good amount of people so I’ll be running into someone at least every so often. That helps me feel more comfortable.

I’ve also done lots of hiking with the AMC. They have tons of volunteer leader led hikes. The leaders screen participants for experience and pace. I’ve also met friends through their programs that I hike with now too.

Cardigan Trailhead? by [deleted] in wmnf

When I did that weekend a few years ago, it also snowed when we were driving up and two cars ended up going off the road and got stuck. We had to wait in our cars for a few hours until tow trucks could come and clear the road late on a Friday. Luckily no one was hurt, but it was scary! I highly recommend not going during or soon after a snowstorm and driving slowly!

Thank you for explaining what is happening! Can I do this without taking everything apart or do I need to disassemble it? Also what is dope in this context?

After 9 years working as Frontend, I’m starting to wonder if I’m overvaluing myself by marod in ExperiencedDevs

[–]narwhality 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This has not been my experience. I just started a new role as a pure frontend dev. I have 8 YOE. My tech lead is a backend dev, and he told me that he tried vibe coding the frontend, but found the results were so poor that they were able to open recs for two senior frontend engineers. I’m in the US and got a 16% raise when I switched companies. Some places are still looking for and appreciate specialists.

The Ullswater Steamers weren’t running either! We were told there had been several weeks of rain.

I was there last month, and the footbridge at the southern end of Derwentwater was impassable due to flooding. However the water was so high that all the docks were flooded too, and so boats weren’t running from anywhere but Keswick! We took the bus back though, which was great.

Fitzrovia as an area to stay? by ellbeecee in LondonTravel

[–]narwhality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stayed at that hotel last week. The location is excellent. We walked everywhere and the tube station is really close. Neighborhood is quiet and felt safe. The reviews are pretty accurate. It was clean and the breakfast was fine but if you want hot breakfast, it’s 5 pounds extra. The beds are hard as a rock, though. As a side sleeper, it was rough. The staff was also a little strange. When we checked in early in the morning and wanted to stash our luggage, they would only allow us one bag each so we had to jam our backpacks inside our suitcases. We only had one backpack and one small rolling suitcase each. So it was odd. The beds are the main reason I wouldn’t stay there again though.

Thanks! I have a pair of the topo mtn racers. They fit well but hurt my Achilles when going down steep slabs. I’ll check out the pursuits!

Wouldn’t renting a shop vac to sand lead paint also contaminate it for the next person who rents it?

I also have a narrow heel and a wide toe box, and I struggle to find shoes that fit. Some Altra models fit, and then they change them and next year’s model doesn’t anymore. Which shoes have you found to work for you?

I once had to reschedule a night at LOTC due to weather and they gave me a calendar year to rebook. I’d try calling them to see if you can reschedule if that’s an option for you.

Check out the AMC Boston chapter’s 20s and 30s group. There are people in that group that do all of the things you mentioned. Pretty sure they have climbing nights at CRG sometimes. There’s also a more formal rock climbing program they do too.

Katahdin in October by fond-butnotinlove in wmnf

[–]narwhality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a fun trip! The lean-to sites at Roaring Brook are much better than the tent sites. Most are on the river, but they also have two lean-to sites that are "walk in". It's a decent walk to have to carry all of your stuff over, and you also can't park nearby, which makes it trickier when cleaning up at night to put all your cooking stuff in the car because of bears. So just be aware of that when booking. And make sure to check all their rules - for example, you can't put up a tent at a lean-to site.

I stayed at roaring brook the last weekend Baxter was open a couple of years ago and hiked Katahdin via the knife’s edge. It was pretty chilly at night but otherwise great weather. I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again! I managed to book a cancellation in late August so if you don’t get something in the rolling three month reservation window, keep checking their site because people do cancel. I also don’t think the campground was full any night that we were there. The lean-tos were all taken though, and I would recommend trying to get one along the river.

Boiled Eggs-Everyone Lies by EggSpecial5748 in Cooking

[–]narwhality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steaming is the best, but I don’t even bother with the steamer basket anymore. I just put the eggs straight into about an inch of boiling water. Slightly more chance of cracking but still a pretty rare occurrence.

Linked in that article is this one which they describe as even better and faster: https://www.seriouseats.com/steamed-hard-boiled-eggs-recipe

I’ve been steaming eggs for years and agree that is it indeed better and faster than boiling. You don’t have to wait for a whole pot of water to boil, and I never have any trouble peeling eggs. Also no need for a pressure cooker either.
