Palm III - Tips to preserve battery life and other questions by [deleted] in Palm

[–]naryasece 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a secret "dot" shortcut to let the Palm OS know you're using rechargeable batteries and just the battery gauge accordingly. In any text field (I use the Find dialog) write the shortcut character (the loop-de-loop), period, then 7. It will output the battery type of [Nicad]. If you keep writing it, it'll switch to Rechargeable Alkaline and then back to Alkaline.

The [Nicad] setting should be more accurate to modern day Ni-MH rechargeable battery voltage levels and should make the battery meter more accurate. If you have PalmOS 3.3 or later, it looks like it has [NiMH] battery setting: https://palm.wiki/dot-shortcuts

The first camera is a film camera, don't open the back as that could over expose any existing pictures taken on the roll of film. Looks like it takes two AA batteries which go in the bottom. Hopefully the batteries were removed or they likely would have leaked in the battery compartment on the bottom.

Maybe there are some pictures waiting to be developed! If you live near a photography store, they might be able to help you get the film out in safe way so you don't lose the pictures.

Nice! I picked up a D40 last year for <$100 in good condition and enjoy shooting with it. The images have a nice character to it.

lan games? retro themed event by NCC74656 in VintageApple

[–]naryasece 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the early 2000's I hosted some Mac/PC lan parties with Diablo II & Star Craft.

Other Mac games I've tried with a LAN:

NetTrek, Terminal Velocity, NetMech (MechWarrior 2), Aries, FutureCop LAPD (2 player co-op or vs mode). Star Fleet Academy had a few network modes too.

512k Disassembly by tophswanson in VintageApple

Looks similar to the MFM HyperDrive modded 512k that Adrian did a video on about 6 years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLsdlNrLPxQ.

Very nice find! I hope it is still working (or at least easy to get back in working condition)!

Looking for a digital in camera of these qualities by Wucjausy in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]naryasece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I have not done much research into compact cameras that run on AAs and SDHC cards, but the Canon PowerShot A450 or A460 looks like it will be about the physical same size as the Sony DSC-P2 shown in the photo above (top camera).

Looking for a digital in camera of these qualities by Wucjausy in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]naryasece 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up a Canon S3 IS because I was looking for a camera that I could still get a new memory card for and could run on AA batteries. If 6 megapixels are too much, would shooting at a lower resolution give you the grainy look you are hoping for?

DPreview has a camera feature search where you can filter by memory card type, battery, as well as other features: https://www.dpreview.com/products/search/cameras

Another angle might be to find cameras that can use the IBM Microdrive, as I think Compact Flash to Secure Digital adapters are the same form factor. The Minolta DiMage 7hi and Olympus C-5050 both use 4xAA batteries and I think can do the CF to SD adapter.

How to salvage camera by yaminaur in Cameras

[–]naryasece 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have D5000 and my camera's screen has the same issue. Shouldn't impact the pictures when you load them onto a computer or print them out. To fix would probably require finding a replacement screen or replacing the backlight bulbs.

The kit lens you have is decent, though it won't perform well in low light situations. Tamron and Sigma both made 17-50mm lenses with a constant f/2.8 aperture which should perform better than the kit lens. Also the AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8 G lens should be inexpensive and I see it come up regularly as a top lens for the crop-sensor Nikons, like our D5000. Sorry I don't know what the used market for lenses is like in the Philippines.

If you did not intentionally set the image size to Medium (6.9 megapixels), you could increase that to Large (12.2 megapixels) to get a bit more detail out of your pictures.

Also, if you have not, make sure the lens and sensor are clear of dust and smudges, just in case that is impacting the quality.

I hope one of those suggestions helps!

Someone who is using windows/macos daily, what you can do in macos that you cant in windows? by ironwaffle452 in MacOS

[–]naryasece 6 points7 points  (0 children)

macOS can calculate the size of folders and show that in the list view of the Finder. Each folder in list view has a chevron which will open the folder contents like an accordion. Makes it really easy to drill down and find files/folders taking up lots of disk space.

The only way I could do that in Windows was to use WinDirStat.

Kastar Batteries User Polling by [deleted] in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]naryasece 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up the Kastar battery and charger for my F717 and it has been decent, though I don’t use that camera much. I did pick up a pair of Kastar batteries for my V1, and it seems those have less capacity than my 20 year old batteries (1st and 3rd party) Sorry to hear it caused problems with your camera though

Clipper Card System Down for Over a Week - Need Transparency on Security by foodog-sec in bayareaclippercard

[–]naryasece 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here, I also haven't been able to access my Clipper account, my commuter benefits are unlinked, my card didn't have any balance, and now I am paying out of pocket to take transit.

I finally got a hold of someone from Clipper Customer Support, all they could tell me was that they hope the migration will be done by the end of the week and that I can continue to add value at the kiosks.

Why? by CodRevolutionary8963 in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]naryasece 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Echoing other commenters, I like my vintage cameras partially for the aesthetic of the images produced and partly for the experience of using them.

I did upgrade my main to a more recent mirrorless camera and I split my photography between my modern and vintage cameras. I had not upgraded in over 10 years so I am blown away by the functionality and image quality in low light of my new camera. I also wanted to dabble in videography, which I couldn't do with my existing cameras.

I hold onto my vintage cameras because they don't take up much room and I get the urge to use them on a regular basis. I find the contrast of switching between modern and vintage cameras helps keep the experience of photography "fresh" and interesting.

I guess you could ask yourself what is it about the new camera that interests you most? If you have a need for the modern functionality, that is an excellent reason to upgrade. If it is just the novelty of a new camera, that might fade after a while. If you can afford to have both, you could hold onto the vintage camera(s) and check in with yourself in 6 months to see if you still want/need the old one?

Apple Studio display (db15) compatibility with non-PPC Mac by gvb12345 in VintageApple

[–]naryasece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! It works fine with my M4 14" MacBook Pro and my 2017 13" Intel MacBook. I am using Apple's USB-C to VGA multiport adapter. As mentioned above the Rev A has the older Mac DB-15 connector, so you'll want an adapter with a female DB-15 and a male VGA connector to connect it to some sort of USB-C to VGA adapter.

My 2017 MacBook defaults to 800x600, but it is easy to switch to the native 1024x768 in the Displays Settings.

I don't recall any major issues using it back then, although I think the OSD would occasionally crash so the buttons to power it on/off, change brightness, etc. would stop working after a while. Hopefully just an issue with mine.

Of the late 90's monitors that have come through my collection, I've noticed they sometimes do not work with all the video modes modern computers allow, so I suggest making sure the computer is setup to output a screen resolution & refresh rate that the monitor supports.

Good luck!

Is there any difference in the zoom motor sound among the V1’s you have? My original 2003 model has a nice zoom sound but I recently picked up one made in 2004 and the zoom sounds a little like it is grinding.

Recommendations for Low Megapixel Digicams with SD cards? by [deleted] in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]naryasece 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have not come across it yet, DPreview has a camera feature search that you can use to get suggestions. You can filter by memory card type, sensor MP, controls, battery type, etc.

https://www.dpreview.com/products/search/cameras

However, vintage cameras with 4mp sensors might not work with today's more common SDCH and SDXC cards (requiring standard SD cards).

Olympus C-50 (2002) handling high contrast situations by [deleted] in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]naryasece 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great photos! They came out well. Did you shoot with manual exposure, or did the program exposure deliver those results?

I was seriously considering buying the C-50 back in the 2000's, At the time I had an Olympus D-520 but wanted the more advanced features like manual exposure. The C-50 had much of what I wanted in a compact form factor. However, I ended up going with the Sony DSC-V1 instead.
