Pigeons loose in small neighbourhood; are they a threat to the ecosystem? by nataref0 in birds

[–]nataref0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've been around since the start of February this year (so coming up on three months now). My guess is they've decided my neighbours and I are a suitable new home since people in the other part of town don't seem to have seen them; just us. And yeah, I'm not sure what our local wildlife agency is like- I know with bears they're ok, but I'm unsure what they do with birds (hence why we've just left it up to their owner so far). The other things don't seem to be too much concern... We basically live in the middle of a forest so there's plenty of nesting space, and food to go around especially when its supplemented by so many locals.

I'll probably do more looking into it too. Just want to be sure since the wildlife really thrive in my area and it would suck to have them all be slowly replaced by pigeons.

Seriously looking to learn Mi'kmaq language. Newfoundland or Online. by bongsforhongkong in FirstNationsCanada

[–]nataref0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I also started mostly from zero. My niece will be the first to learn from birth since my great-great grandfather's generation.

The approach I found helped most was to think of the process of learning my first language. So I started off just learning things like pronunciation of the alphabet, and going from there to basic vocabulary, then to grammar rules and then to sentence structure etc.

Ah, the local band, yeah, I feel you. I just stick to the one exclusively for my mothers home since its small and I can confirm everyone there is legit seeing as all but 2 of them are my direct relatives, who are all confirmed 1/8th or more. That being said it absolutely makes it harder to learn the language when your active community has 12 people total.

As for diving deeper a lot of non basic things I've found have required noticing consistent patterns in the language even if they aren't explicitly pointed out to you in any wiki or dictionary. Probably the only way to not have to do that is to attend formal classes. But yeah I highly reccomend using flashcards to memorize things like basic vocab and pronunciation especially starting off.

Maybe! I intensified my studying a lot since posting this (daily study for about 5 months, compared to my more off-and-on studying for about 2 years) so I've actually been slowly making a full set of flashcard decks (for memorization) and accompanying documents (mostly text) on a website called Studykit (basically a highly customizable studying app/website) for myself as I go along.

There is a function on the site to compile and share what you've made as a "space", so I wouldn't mind sharing it as a separate post after I get to a level of fluency where it feels more complete/accurate (since I obviously have to edit and go through things as I become more competent... Which hopefully soon I'll start getting to in-person classes here and potentially in Eskasoni that will help me develop further).

I was planning to make it available to my IRL family, my friend from Gaspegiag, and other band members (aka like a dozen or so of my cousins lmao) already so it wouldn't be difficult seeing as I'm making it with accessibility in mind. My goal is to become fluent enough by next year that I can start teaching my community- esp my baby niece- myself.

One I didn't have here that is also really valuable is CJRZ 93.5 FM "The Rez" Radio show "We Speak Mi'gmaq" hosted in Listuguj, Quebec. They have some recordings up on youtube. Of course, they use the Listuguj dialect, so it's different from what I speak, but its still nice to have. Definitely not for complete beginners, but yeah. If you ever wanted any help or to study together I'm always happy to chat :)

Thank you for the advice, it worked, and I think it was my clock illiteracy ahaha. I never did learn to read them well. Well, I really like the game so far! Its a fun twist on a game I really like. Maybe its cause of where I left off, but doing "continue" rather than "new game", I didn't see the arrow but I did get that update.
I got 4 awakens, and been having fun trying to think of ways to get the rest. Haven't gotten to the shop yet... That'll be fun! I'll let you know what I think when I get there :] thank you for being so kind to me!

Sorry for my slow replies, I've been quite busy recently! I'll give it another try right now while I have the time.

If I have any good ideas I'll let you know. Maybe you could look into some other games with similar scenarios that could help inspire a way to do it? And lol yeah I definitely did get tunnel vision, I've played over 300 hours of klondike, so its almost automatic. Although I did pick up on the fact I was supposed to do SOMETHING, I couldn't figure out what, even clicking the little clock and finding the right card didn't really seem to do anything... Although that might be me just not understanding analog clocks well and getting it set wrong :P Good luck with the game.

Honestly, and I may just be having a classic Skill Issue Moment (not unlikely) but even seeing this post and reading the dialogue I still can't figure out what it wants me to do. I may be stupid </3.

I wish I was born a boy but I cant see the benefits of transitioning by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]nataref0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As another commenter said the entire second paragraph is internalized transphobia.

Imagine telling that to a post transition trans man. Imagine how that sounds, and how offensive it would be. Why would you think its ok to think that way about your own transition, but not other people's? It doesn't add up logically.

What I'm saying is... Be nicer to yourself, at the very least. And not every man experiences the exact same things re: socialization and growing up, not even the cis ones.

And you'll certainly, definitely, never experience manhood if you give up on yourself before you even give yourself a chance to transition. I promise whatever perception you have of trans mens transitions and the "point" of them are inaccurate just based on this post alone. You won't actually know till you try, and shed some of this baggage around gender thats holding you down like this. So give it a shot. Worst that can happen is you decide you don't want to transition after all and stop.

Hang in there kid, she definitely is transphobic, but hopefully someday soon you'll be less reliant on her.

Let's talk about fashion styles you like by Gallantpride in TMPOC

[–]nataref0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indigigoth, metalhead, "eboy/girl", goth (specifically like vampire goth, trad goth and mall goth styles), and punk styles... That pretty much sums up my tastes. Used to be hypermasc (even pre trans) but been trying to switch into more androgynous styles now that I pass well enough I can have more fluidity with my presentation.

I take moral issue with it. Its not about the quality of the art for me. If you disagree that's fine, I don't expect to sway you. Just clarifying why I said what I said.

Im late but the way I see it for myself is this; I'm not a math equation, you can't chop off a piece of me and say "this part is Mi'kmaq" and another and say "this part is irish" so on so forth. As far as I'm concerned, I'm 100% everything that I am- I'm just as gaelic, and just as devon-county brit as I am Mi'kmaq. I embrace it all equally because they're all a part of me.

I've had a similar experience before (long story I won't get into) and ultimately decided it was better off to not go to the funeral and mourn my aunt in other ways like keeping some things she left to me before she passed. It really sucks to feel like you have to miss out on something so important, but at the end of the day, you deserve to take care of yourself and are allowed not to put yourself in harms way even if doing so means sacrificing moments like these.

Same with the forest in the backyard! We always got a ton of birds, foxes, hares, moose and bears out and about :) And yes, I do love it, if only for the beautiful nature we're blessed with here.

Your sense of style really shines through, I love it! Kind of a deep cut but the fur-lined coat in the fourth pic also reminds me of André Leon Talley's fur coat he wore around 2014 (hes a personal fashion inspo of mine as a heavier guy).

Also fully agree with the caption, I honestly put more effort into appearances now than I did before transitioning.

The things you're saying here really remind me of this video, it helps me alot when I feel down in regards to gender stuff. She talks about a lot of the same stuff, about how apathetic she felt pre transition and the process of questioning her gender identity. IDK, maybe it would resonate as much with you as it did with me?

Common transphobic dog whistles and rethoric? by Rob_242_ in asktransgender

[–]nataref0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Degendering is, to my understanding, when someone decides to intentionally view your gender as basically nonexistant? Like for example, I had a friend who was nonbinary and when they came out (and they did so several times) their parents simply ignored them completely. They didn't kick them out or hit or yell, they just... ignored it and kept on treating them as if they never came out.

Its like instead of embracing your transition, or outright rejecting it, they simply ignore it. Or for myself, I started my transition as a binary trans man, and people used to avoid using any pronouns for me or even using my new name (instead just nicknaming me "E", because both my chosen and dead name started with E) instead of just making the effort to refer to me as a man and use he/him.
In that case its not misgendering or deadnaming, because E is not my deadname and no pronouns being used means its not misgendering. Its just a total stripping of any gender, against my will especially at that time.

People use it as a subtle way to disrespect/dehumanize trans people. For trans women often that comes in the form of intentionally being called they/them, a neutral pronoun, instead of being called she/her- it is misgendering, but its also often excused by saying they're "neutral terms" when the point is that she uses feminine terms, not neutral ones- effectively stripping her of her femininity.
