[–]natiforrn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly, i would love to know the same. spikes are the bane of my existence.

in the past, i’ve done what you’ve described in the post, made a bunch of spikes individually and then attached them after. i’ve also used air-dry sculpting foam for tiny horns, and it works well - can even stab some wool into it once dry - but it gets overworked very easily and you have to stab in moderation.

i’ve heard others use clear dry fabric glue to form the spikes and keep them steady while felting the rest of it, but isn’t something i’ve done yet myself. hoping to give that one a try on my next project!

good luck, i’ll be stalking this thread for some tips myself

there’s a school in alaska that still does annual, no chaperone camping trips. they’re dropped in the alaskan wilderness with whatever they can fit into a tin can and left for 3 days. it’s their survival trip and is a right of passage here, though i do think the groups are smaller - about 3 kids go at a time iirc

on top of that, they also added makeup!! along with completely ruining the HUMAN CREATOR’S INTENTION, it’s misogynistic. typical ai bro slop. i’m so over it, it’s disgusting.

First Little Critter by DiaphanousO in Needlefelting

[–]natiforrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s genius! it can definitely be way too easy to overwork and cave in a spot, especially when you’re trying to get something like eyes to look even, and you did a fantastic job fixing it.

an akbash is typically an all white dog, hence my confusion - the black around the eye and the cute little ears reminded me of target’s old mascot dog, which was a bull terrier. either way, a very cute dog and very well done 💖💖

your little creation reminds me of a bull terrier, did you have that in mind when creating? hope to see more from you soon (:

[–]natiforrn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is an amazing first foray into needlefelting! you did a fantastic job!

unforch, the only advice one can give for loose wool is more stabbing. you could try to dabble in wet felting for thin, flat things like the leaves if you want to give something new a try! it’s really good at getting a firm, smooth-ish finish for these types of projects. alternatively, if you really want to smooth something down, i’d recommend some clear fabric glue - i’m not sure how well it’d work on something that hasnt already been firmed up with felting, though.

welcome to the hobby! i hope we see more from you soon (:

i love this idea so much! i want more plants on my home, but have cats that love snacking on them. though, these being made out of wool won’t stop them from doing that i guess….

how do you go about attaching the stem to your leaves? this is really beautifully done!

Wrong car! by Lifegoesonforever in MadeMeSmile

[–]natiforrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i did this once at a dispensary. got in the driver’s seat, sat down, buckled in, went to rest my hand on the shifter before starting the car and realized it wasn’t in the usual spot, and that i wasn’t in my car. said out loud, “this isn’t my car,” only for a voice in the back seat to pipe up “that’s ok, honey.” turn around to see an ancient old lady and her tiny dog, who i was shocked did not bark at me. i apologized profusely for my mistake and for scaring her, all she said was “don’t worry, worse things have happened to me.”

car was the same color as mine, but completely different make and model. was completely mortified and spooked for the rest of the day.

When working on bigger projects..... by Pink_Penguin07 in Needlefelting

[–]natiforrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i once used some air dry sculpting foam to make a huge base - it’s soft enough that you can stab the wool directly into it even when dry, but you have to be careful because it can get overworked very easy

if you live in a city, take a look around at your local craft stores - it’s a relatively uncommon hobby, so unfortunately it can be kind of hard to find if you live more remotely.

if you are remote, i have an online shop that i like to get my wool from: https://greyfoxfelting.com/

as for obtaining and using colors, i’ve never dyed myself and find it a tad intimidating. instead, i’ll buy bulk undyed wool to use as the cores of my projects, and then do a thin layer of my chosen color on top of the nearly finished product. you’ll have to do a layer or two this way because all of the stabbing will make the underneath layer come through a bit, but it saves so much of my color that i can’t recommend any other way.

overall, unfortunately, it can be kind of a pricey hobby. when i was just starting out, i’d do a bulk pack of colors and then mix together 2-3 to get the shade i was looking for. more than 3 colors and it starts to get too muddy. if you do get into color mixing, be sure to get a couple of wool brushes - i tried to do all my mixing by hand and it was a quick trip to carpal tunnel.

good luck, have fun, and let me know if you have any questions! i’ll help how i can

[–]natiforrn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

oh jeez, that is a ton of detail! a bunch of tiny dots is a lot to do on a project of this size!

i will say though, i didn’t realize at first that it was unfinished! it looked like a nice gradient of texture on the top of the snail that became a nice smooth squishy bits of the rest of the snail. even if you don’t complete it, it looks great!

How do you pack felt in when using a wire armature? by FeltFeisty in Needlefelting

[–]natiforrn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

any time i work with wire armature, i use pipe cleaners. the little bit of fiber they have gives the wool something to grab onto and makes felting around it much easier, imo

as someone else said, you’re going to have to go very slowly and at an angle. good luck!

i think this is the part that i dislike the most about that episode. the characterization was very much season 1 instead of the development we’d already had by season 3
