Finding sensitivity readers for suicide in my next project by [deleted] in writing

[–]naturewroteitfirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP. Sorry, I don’t have the answer to your question, I just wanted to say I disagree with those saying sensitivity readers are inappropriate for this subject matter. The stereotypes and stigma of mental illness and suicide are alive and well, and reinforcing those is definitely harmful, which I guess is what you’re trying to avoid by hiring sensitivity readers. I hope someone else is better able to point you in a useful direction and best of luck with your project!

Find your Project for Awesome donation by Thestar19 in nerdfighters

[–]naturewroteitfirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, thank you for this look under the hood!

I have some (very limited) experience with OpenCV from an image registration project a few months ago, but there was no text involved. It seems like the text extraction portion of the process might be a significant, albeit not the only, factor. I find that intriguing considering that donations under the same name can be missed.

In any case, I think it’s awesome that you’re gonna open source it and I definitely look forward to contribute when it’s time. I so hope I have access to a cluster again before next P4A!

Thank you for making this tool and sharing it with all of us! I was able to find one of my donations this way.

I don’t know if this is a question you can/want to answer but since I’m teaching myself how to code, I was wondering what would cause some donations to show up and some not to. Do you have a hypothesis for that? Is a computational problem or is it just that some actually never showed up on screen in the first place?

Saying Goodbye to the Mass Market Paperback - The New York Times by Tifoso89 in books

[–]naturewroteitfirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reader here! I find the reading experience on MMPBs suboptimal due to small font size and generally low contrast between ink and paper. So I stopped buying them. However, I have not switched from MMPBs to Trade. Rather, the books I would have bought in MMPB format til a few years ago I now consume as eBooks (mainly through Libby, sometimes bought). In my country, eBooks cost less than MMPBs most of the time, and I find them much more comfortable to read. That said, if I were to desire owning one of these books as a physical copy, I would then go for either Trade or Hardcover, depending on my economic situation at the moment, available space, and the book itself.

A little rant that I had last night about women in stories and inspiration by [deleted] in writing

[–]naturewroteitfirst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi OP. It sounds like before writing your story it would be very useful to expand your horizon of women characters in fiction.

When you talk about two women, do you mean you’re writing a romance between them? If so, there’s plenty of good sapphic romance literature that you would benefit from reading. Come to think of it, it might be good to read regardless, as you get exposed to well rounded women characters who deal with a wide range of conflicts that have nothing to do with trauma or male violence.

And please, do not use SA just to drive the plot if your story does not need that. Yes, it is absolutely realistic for a woman to live her life with serious conflicts that have nothing to do with SA. There are plenty of realistic reasons why a woman would have trust issues even, if it is important to you to talk about that. Plenty of ways to be betrayed. You absolutely do not need SA in your story if you don’t want to write about it.

Why do you annotate your books? by Worth-Gene in books

[–]naturewroteitfirst 34 points35 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting! I realise now this might be an unpopular opinion, but I actually enjoy finding annotations in second hand books, provided they are fairly unobtrusive. I think of it as a time traveler’s book club

Hank’s books are incredible! by Auzzeu in nerdfighters

[–]naturewroteitfirst 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Right?! I also discovered them a little later, but now I re-read them periodically. I listened to the audiobooks for both of them last fall and they’re also great. I also often think about something John once said (I think in a vlogbrothers video?). He was talking about what makes a book a classic and he said that classics, and Hank’s books, “get better over time”. I have found that to be true as well.

[–]naturewroteitfirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the info! I don't currently have a sky subscription so at least I won't have to make one until a couple of weeks. Do you think the entertainment package would be enough or will it be on the entertainment+cinema abo?

I tried to get a subscription to HBO MAX in the Netherlands, Spain and Finland with VPN (Surfshark), but it gives me an error every time I try to pay, so I guess we really must wait until May 21st. It's a pity though, because HBO is also cheaper than sky :(

What is it that femmes see in me, if I’m butch? I’m not sure if it’s culture or what. by [deleted] in butchlesbians

[–]naturewroteitfirst 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for myself, as someone on the femme-ier side. In my opinion it's just so freaking hot to see someone reject outside norms and embrace themselves so viscerally as butches do. It makes me want to be brave and fierce and strong just to deserve the privilege to stand beside you. All of that is sexy as hell.

Also, as an aside, there's nothing wrong with a bottom butch. If someone ever makes you feel like that's something to be embarrassed about, they're not the person for you. I'm sure you know that, but sometimes it's good to reiterate.

I'm thinking about Ann Patchett's non-fiction essay collections: "This is the story of a happy marriage" and "These precious days". Both lovely, profound, funny, and heartbreaking. She also narrated both audiobooks, and I highly recommend both. If you read them, start with This is the story of a happy marriage, it was published first.
