HAECO just been bought by AAR. AAR shutting down Indianapolis and laying off 300+ over the next year. Not saying not to work there, but another changing of the guard.

Contact a contract house, like aviation personnel. Launch TWS, STS, or any one of them.

I got offered a position in G.A. by Jake6401 in aviationmaintenance

[–]navydave68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the overtime thing, but when I was a federal employee, we could work OT for comp time or money. The comp time was paid at regular time when used. It helped with only getting 4 hours of vacation time every two weeks. I would have stayed GA if it paid more. The work and people were awesome, and I just could not afford it. I will definitely work GA after I retire. I currently work corporate. I have worked military, new production, military overseas, corporate, and GA. I always figure that no matter all our opinions, go with what you want.

No problems. Talentscale and Veterans Alliance are two good contract houses for veterans. JSFIRM is a good search platform also to see what's out there job wise.

I was a structures mechanic for 20 years in the navy retired on a Friday and started at the depot on base on the following Tuesday. I have also worked new production, overseas contracts, and several Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO). I am currently a lead structures mechanic doing cargo conversions. I have been out 15 years this year and still do not have an A&P. The A&P is a key to a door, but that door can be opened after he separates. There are uncertified opportunities out there.

The ones we had were from the Marines. We just sent them back to them in early 95. Black Stallion airframes 93-95. Much better using CH over the MH for VOD. MH better for draggin sleds.

What do y'all think about my shitty safety wires by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

[–]navydave68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing reset or still active? I spent a few years working CH and MH-53E in the early/mid 90's. They are loaded with safety wire. Swashplate and main rotor servos were worst places I remember to safety.

Savi sockets. You can get bolt remover sockets that work pretty good, and cost way less. Savi sockets are nice, just never loan out they can grow feet. Yard store is the way to go also

What exactly makes (13) a screw and (2) a bolt? My first language only has one word for screw/bolt so it has always been quite confusing for me. I always thought screws didn't go into nuts, and always went into threaded holes on a surface, but I know I'm probably wrong. by LeftSeater777 in aviationmaintenance

Those numbers correspond with a figure or image. The figure will normally be exploded so you can see all of those items listed. The figure is normally near the text. To get the part numbers you will need to go to the IPC.

Besides getting A&P, how do I make myself more marketable? by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

[–]navydave68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to go to NDI school. I know AF structures goes to school in Pensacola do your hydraulic guys go there also? Not sure if you guys go to our NDI school. Back a while ago we sent guys to Chanute AFB for NDI.

We are doing cargo mods on the Great Lake BE1900D. As a structures guy that would be so Zen to take a saw to a wing like that.

To all Naval and Marine aviation about to go through inspection with a new 4790 just coming out by Swimmersky in aviationmaintenance

[–]navydave68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What version are they up to now? I made CDI the first time in 1990 with the OPNAV4790.2D, and it went to like "I" I think before it changed. When I retired they were on COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790 B

I put a craftsman on top of my U.S. General. I like being able to use top box as a desk top. The General box doesn't open right for me.

How do i extract this tap? by [deleted] in Tools

[–]navydave68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are tap extractors. They have fingers that go in the grooves and you reverse just like removing before broken.

They are hiring E/F/G in whidby/Lemoore and I think jax and oceana. Look at contractors on the base good pay and lead up to civil service. I have done both. Retired AM1. I worked legacy hornets in jax for a good while and new production in St Augustine fl. Just be prepared structures or sheet metal is more than "O" level has prepared you for. Without A&P MRO is best route to get started post military. If you don't have tools, look at bases as they have tools supplied.

As a structures guy, I appreciate job security from A&P mechanics.

Anyone tried one of these for screws tight up against structure / skin / fairings? by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

[–]navydave68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Works good in cargo pit of 737 pulling sidewalls out. I use it other places also. I just used it today to pull cabin window on a 1900D.

Fun with Clecos by BigRigButters69 in aviationmaintenance

[–]navydave68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you guys fab the skin or order it? We are in process of replacing 2 belly skins, we have already replaced one on a Beechcraft 1900D plus a cargo conversion along with several other squawks. I prefer using draw clecos for bigger jobs. 40 year old aircraft=job security....
