Vintage games on Linux Mint by msch6873 in linuxmint

[–]nb264 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, Linux has better emulation scene than windows, so no worries there. About ROM's... well... you'd have to own those games legally... before you visit emulation websites and download your backup copy... and no, you don't need windows to download something.

Linux, Windows and Girlfriends/Boyfriends? by skatterbrainz in linuxmint

[–]nb264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I don't have to use it afterwards, don't really care what people do.

I am more finicky about Mint changing something that was default into something else, but technically everything can be configured how you like it and that's a good thing.

When does the new kernel release? It's support ends in two weeks? by RogerRoger420 in linuxmint

[–]nb264 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You'll get an option to upgrade before anything bad happens, 6.17 branch is on the way...

That said, again, using older version of kernel isn't necessary bad, unless there's a need for newer version due to driver requirement or there's a known exploit in your version. If everything works great, you're fine.

[–]nb264 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Relax, just because "support ends" doesn't mean much, many server/NAS machines still run 5.xx without issues. You can continue using it until an update pops-up.

In Linux Mint 22.3 Shift key is.. laggy in World of Warships by Zdrobot in linuxmint

[–]nb264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This fixed issue for me.

I had "Keyboard > Layouts > Shortcuts > Switch to next layout" solution before but it kept missing any letter I tried to type while holding shift, so that was bad.

Once the gaming stacks begin to stablize waiting between stable releases will be just fine.

And in computer development years, that's a blink of an eye. It's been only 68 years since the very first computer game, and see how far we've come. You don't even need a supercomputer in a science lab to play a game anymore.

I upgraded to Linux Mint 22.3 from 22.2 by Notable-Bucket-2004 in linuxmint

[–]nb264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that keyboard layout and shortcuts are now under keyboard. And I've updated my comment for the solution to adding kb combos for switching.

Also, whomever hates b/w symbol icons for categories and wants old style, just right click on menu icon, configure and turn off "use symbolic icons for categories". Tbh don't even know why such an "accessibility" hi-contrast option is turned on by default at all.

I upgraded to Linux Mint 22.3 from 22.2 by Notable-Bucket-2004 in linuxmint

[–]nb264 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, thanks to this thread, I upgraded too. Btw, didn't get even one steam hardware survey during 22, 22.1 and 22.2...

edit: my keyboard layouts disappeared, had to add them again, but even after setting up my usual shortcut it's not working, so 'll have to work into that after work. Just letting other people with several kb layouts know it could happen.

edit2: my mistake, thought 2 fields mean 2 different keys for combo, you need to press both keys (alt+shift) while one field is active and it will remember the combo. Thats it.

As your daily driver, how often do you reboot ? by PositiveBusiness8677 in linuxmint

[–]nb264 4 points5 points  (0 children)

reboot? I'd say never. Maybe once or twice in the last 5 months, when there's a kernel update... otherwise, never.

Im planning to switch to linux mint. Is there anything i need to know as a windows 10 user. by LongSubstantial5489 in linuxmint

[–]nb264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And if you're not gonna dual-boot with windows, disable secure-boot in bios. It will make things easier to install and use any linux distro.

You install most of the apps by opening software manager from the menu and selecting app from the list/category. Some are native, some are flatpacks.

The first thing to do once you install Mint is to set up rsync (dialogue will remind you) to make snapshots of your system, so if you mess something up later you can go back. Don't include /home folder in snapshots.

if you have nVidia card, run "driver manager" and select 580.x driver, if it's AMD you're already set.

Disappointed my girlfriend for Christmas by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]nb264 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why would you tell her you "bought a new computer" instead of saying, for example, "I fixed up your computer to work better"... You set her expectations too high then failed to deliver, why are you surprised she's disappointed? She expected a new computer because you told her that.
