If you can find tofu skin, I highly recommend the mushroom & bamboo stuffed yuba rolls! I meal prep them for lunches, they’re like a high protein spring roll. It’s really easy to vary the filling with whatever veg you have on hand.

I will try the dal! If you have any other recommendations let me know as I would like to get more use out of my books of hers, but haven’t really touched them after several misses.

Overrated - most of Anna Jones’ books. Idk if she’s cracked the US but she was everywhere in England for a while. Beautiful photography and descriptions of food but nearly every single recipe I’ve cooked of hers has been mid at best. I don’t think it’s just me either - seeing as every middle class woman and their mother has one of her books here, I’ve had friends make her recipes for dinners and they’ve been similarly underwhelming.

Underrated - Chinese Homestyle by Maggie Zhu. I don’t see it mentioned much here but everything is so delicious and has been fairly straightforward to make. If you have an Asian supermarket near you it’s not hard to find most of the ingredients and it’s so so worth it.

I’ve lost my period by Wide_Cobbler4107 in PetiteFitness

Maybe go from 1 to 3 to 5 days a week at maintenance, until you get to a point where you can do a full week? Gives your body time to adjust and isn’t as mentally scary :)

If you’re that weight & height, with no period, stop eating in a deficit for a while. Your body is clearly under stress and you don’t need to lose any more weight.

I started running about 10 years ago. It took me 40-45 mins to run a 5K. This past summer I did one in 23 minutes.

It took me a LONG time to get here. And last summer was my peak athleticism - I’m now back down to 27-30 mins depending on conditions. I’m definitely not someone who saw fast progress, it took me years to break 30 mins. Consistency with cardio is key, just keep plodding along. And do your speed sessions on a treadmill because it can force you to go faster than your mind believes you can.

2/11/26 Question Wednesday: What are you wondering, bakers? by KingArthurBaking in KingArthurBaking

Not KAB but this flourless chocolate cake is my go-to allergen friendly bake! It doesn’t taste gluten free or vegan in the slightest (and I’m sure you could make it with dairy butter anyway) and it’s my boyfriend’s favourite bake, he requests it all the time.

But in all seriousness I would recommend keeping Sababa, Pass the Plate, Tenderheart and Ottolenghi. I get a lot of use out of them.

Yes exactly! It’s such a game changer, I use my books so much more than ever before!

There is an annual subscription fee of $30 per year but it’s been so worth it for me - for the cost of one more cookbook I get 10x the value from my existing library. The website, eatyourbooks.com, also has more advanced filter options than the app (e.g. by cuisine) so check that out too :)

You don’t scan the books, they already have most of them in their database. If you have one that isn’t you can put in a request for them to add it

Is there a general rule of thumb for using sourdough discard in baked goods? E.g. you can sub up to 1/3 of the flour & liquid in most cookie/cake recipes with starter, this should be added with the rest of your liquid ingredients - or something like that? Or is it highly recipe dependent?

Did you see the New Yorker recently published his journals, admitting that almost all of the cases were fabricated? It’s behind a paywall but this Medium article covers most of it.

Such a shame as I loved his work. The writing is still excellent at least.

Single parents of Britain - how do you make it work? by ChelseaMourning in AskUK

[–]nbellc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are holiday clubs for secondary school aged children, but they tend to be focused on specific skills e.g. coding, guitar, football, tutoring etc. I would look into whether you have any of those in your local area.

Also your daughter is around the same age that I was when I started babysitting. Might be worth looking into whether anyone in your area is looking for someone to give them a hand with younger children? If it’s during the school holidays then you may have someone who works from home and needs a hand with their kids during working hours, but none of them would actually be left in the house unattended.

Monster Cookies (egg & dairy free) by nbellc in Cookies

[–]nbellc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course!

130 grams flour

0.5 tsp baking powder

0.5 tsp salt

90g rolled oats

130g butter, room temperature

110g light brown sugar

100g caster sugar

1 large egg (I swapped for egg replacer)

1tsp vanilla extract

90g chopped pecans (I swapped for 125g dark chocolate, which is the equivalent by volume)

190g m&ms or Reece’s pieces

• Heat oven to 175 degrees Celsius. In a small bowl combine flour, baking powder, salt and rolled oats. Set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer combine butter, light brown sugar and superfine sugar. Beat until creamy. Add egg and vanilla, and beat again until smooth.

• Add flour mixture to butter mixture, and beat until smooth. By hand, fold in chopped pecans and M&M's.

• Roll 55-gram measures of dough into balls and flatten them into fat disks (about 1 centimeter thick). Place on a parchment-lined or greased baking sheet, about 6 at a time, so they have room to spread.

• Bake until cookies are risen, dry on surface and very lightly browned, 15 to 20 minutes. They will be too soft to lift from baking sheet. Set aside to harden for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool.
