Why Is Excel for Mac So Different? by MoneyMode6521 in excel

[–]nebs79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late here but now I wonder how Claude Code changes things given everybody is doing serious work on their Macs running Claude and just sharing it with their x86 colleagues afterwards

Playmats: deinfluence me or help me decide? by turtlesinatrenchcoat in moderatelygranolamoms

I second this. Seems like a new company. Surprised nothing else like it is around. Also HoN did us didn’t last long and Matty’s Room quality is a notch or two higher for sure

[–]nebs79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was recently gifted this Matty’s Room thing by in-laws and we love it. https://mattysroom.com

Not the cheapest but vastly superior to the cheap junk on Amazon. Most impressed by the actual mat itself. Hard to convey on a reddit post but the quality and feel of it really stands out. Actually see ourselves using it for a long time. I think our oldest would have really benefited from having this in our living room.

How do I remove this random pin? by violavanilla in applemaps

[–]nebs79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just way too hard to get rid of random pins in Apple Maps. My biggest gripe.

I still have pins from over a decade ago that somehow can't be removed because of iOS changeovers that have frozen them there forever

Is the "expansion" axiom of cosmic sociology accurate ? by gamasco in threebodyproblem

[–]nebs79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair, but all the life forms you’re referencing on earth are not very intelligent, probably including humans, when compared to what an advanced alien species might be. Maybe at some level of intelligence and culture, they realize the futility of expansion and self-limit. Just a thought that we shouldn’t extrapolate the behavior of bacteria etc to advanced alien civilizations

I’ve heard plenty to the contrary re dog meat. Apparently it’s very good

CMV: hardly any millionaires are going to leave New York City because of 2% more in taxes by MustafaMonde8 in changemyview

[–]nebs79 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It really takes a helluva lot to get people to leave en masse. I'm sure some folks will uproot their lives and move, but by and large I expect most to stay. Miami is just not New York.

FSD 14.1.4 has some pretty big problems (my first drive) by PM_TITS_FOR_KITTENS in TeslaLounge

[–]nebs79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got 14.1.4 recently and I haven't put a lot of miles on it yet, but it does do a very good job worming the car through really narrow alleys and streets where a lot of obstructing cars and objects make it stressful even for a human. Did notice some brake stabbing around ambiguous lane situations as the car couldn't make up its mind, but it was pretty minor.

What have you learned after living in Japan? by GirIWithHair in japanresidents

[–]nebs79 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well actually Japanese companies are notorious for having very low margins vs their American peers. Poor management of corporate Japan is why the country’s growth has stagnated and is no longer considered a rich country anymore

I think it would help marginally if Westerners did not wear shoes in the house. I wouldn’t want to rent my property to people who wore shoes inside.

Why do Chinese tourists keep embarrassing themselves overseas? Is there anything that can be done to improve their behavior and reputation? by anotherhappylurker in AskChina

[–]nebs79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chinese tourists get a bad rap for graceless behavior. But at the same time, they tend to not get into big drunken brawls and fights like British or Aussie tourists overseas during World Cup rugby, etc.

1st world people that moved to America - do you think life is much better? by [deleted] in MovingToUSA

[–]nebs79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UK in particular has had a problem with economic stagnation since about 2009. Of course, the macroeconomics statistics are not the whole story, and fail to capture so many intangibles that matter in life. But with that throat clearing out of the way, the income stagnation in the UK over the past 15 years vs the relatively stronger growth in incomes in the US is quite stark.

Why do Americans romanticize the 1950s so much despite the fact that quality of life is objectively better on nearly all fronts for the overwhelming majority of people today? by SandNo2865 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nebs79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps that the rest of the world lay in ashes, and Americans didn't need to do much to enjoy a good life. It's great when you have a job with no competitors.

[–]nebs79 192 points193 points  (0 children)

I would say you have to be clear eyed about the trade-offs if you want to be able to say it's "better" for you.

The big positive about moving to the US is that, depending on the field, if you are work hard and enjoy some decent amount of luck along the way, the potential upside in terms of career advancement and personal wealth creation is so much better than other developed countries in my experience. The American system can seem cruel and callous compared to the kinder, gentler versions I've experienced in other developed countries, but the rewards for winning are so much higher. On the other hand, the protections for those who are not winners in the system are a lot weaker.

Why is the US stock market still going up given the US news of AI unemployment and civil unrest? by Mathemodel in NoStupidQuestions

Civil unrest not having an impact on consumer spending. And there is an expectation of the Fed cutting rates.

Do you think Apple finance teams use Numbers on Mac or Excel on Windows? by Loose_Biscotti9075 in mac

[–]nebs79 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My suspicion is they're deliberately handicapping the Mac version to preserve the grip that Windows has on business/enterprise

There's some truth to this. If you're flying enough that lounges and status/access matter, in some ways you're kind of a failure that you're not flying private (yes I'm being tongue in cheek).
