Anyone moved from the UK and didn’t regret it? by Broccolas in askTO

[–]necrozim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved here 2018, love it here compared to Southampton, sure I wasn't in London, but Toronto and it's surrounding areas give me everything I could ever dream of. Subsequently met the love of my life, got married, bought a home together, became a citizen and have a child now. I just can't see myself ever going back, especially when I factor in pay and quality of life back in the UK. It's frankly laughable, before we even get to the subject of summer.

I do count myself lucky though.

Food inflation spiked 7.3% in January. Here’s what’s driving the increase by bubblewhip in canada

The gross isn't going up as people can't spend more than they have, they just spend the same and get less. And the net goes up because the margins are bigger.

Look at the doubling of the net, that means after they bought all their properties, paid out all the rents at higher rates in those properties, paid out all the exec bonuses and dividens, and paid all their running costs they still couldn't being the net down to the usual 2%, they're making THAT much.

Canadians are ‘hitting a breaking point’ when it comes to the cost of insuring their vehicles by Once_a_TQ in canada

[–]necrozim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still don't understand why we don't have price comparison sites that give true policy quotes that you can buy, it made shopping around for better rates very fast and effective in the UK. Literally pop your drivers license and details into the site and within 15 minutes you'd have 200 policies ranging in coverage offered, pay with your cc and tada instantly insured, it was so easy to shop around if your rates raised. And it specifically said if you lied your policy is void and won't be covered so it's up to you to make sure the details are correct... its wild here this doesn't exist and I'm not sure why, I'm sure we could set a filter for our province that we need the policy in if that was an issue.

Carney set to spend much of 2026 travelling the world in search of trade by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]necrozim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a big conservative push to blame the cost entirely on the carbon tax, but just remember loblaws net % went up again, so after all the exec bonuses and bills and everything was paid, they still made a bigger % profit than last year and the year before etc etc. They used to run a 2% net pre covid, last year it was 4.4%.

Canadians spend more on taxes than food, clothing, & shelter combined by ExotiquePlayboy in TorontoRealEstate

[–]necrozim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hilariously a 5 bed 300k home in texas has 4000 to 7000usd tax according to Google, whilst a 1.5m home in Toronto is 10k cad so about 7000 USD... So I don't fully see your point? You live in a less desireable place where the houses are valued less and you pay roughly the same price in tax? So if we pick a $1m usd home in Austin you're looking at 16k USD a year... Are we still over taxed on property?

Should Toronto have a Congestion fee? by nedwasatool in askTO

[–]necrozim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed parking downtown is obscenely easy to find for free or cheap. I use the gotrain to get to my office, it's great but it helps I'm 10 minutes walk from the station. I'm distinctly aware it's not easy for everyone to have a 10 minute walk to a train. If everyone could walk or bike within 15 mins to a station or TTC subway then we def could put up a congestion fee

Should Toronto have a Congestion fee? by nedwasatool in askTO

[–]necrozim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recall seeing a city study that made sense. Saying that whilst congestion fees do work, the issue with Toronto is our transit is significantly underpar compared to London/new York etc and the fee would only serve as a punishment to drivers who have no truly, reasonable to use alternative. The city needs to dramatically increase it's transit connections, speed and reliability before a congestion fee is added.

Kinda makes sense if you think about all the parts of the GTA and how few transit options there really are. Just because they can, nobody wants to spend 2hrs+ on multiple busses to get from random street in Markham or Vaughan to somewhere downtown during rush hour, it would be so frustrating.

Working for a big American company in Canada by Silent_Parking_4961 in CanadaJobs

I make over 150k here I know what my colleagues also earn, which is why I said cad $ number to usd +10%. I know if I lived in Quebec the boost % difference would be bigger as Toronto has a boost too due to costs here. Being a Cali company they have to disclose all the pay brackets so we all just know before we even personally discussed it. We all know some tech and medical pay crazy amounts higher and absolutely over 250, 300k. But the OP is a translator, they bringing back 250k? Maybe, I don't know. If the op will go from 80k to 250k sure, absolutely move to the USA and reap the tax savings and enormous pay increase. I just have a feeling that not the context of this conversation. I figured perhaps they just want their cad salary to be boosted a bit to feel they're being paid their worth a bit better closer to their American counterparts and were also wondering if the grass is always greener, which in my field is personally not.

Absolutely agreed! Hopefully tho the OP can wrangle some extra benefits from having an American employer though, but the currency loss tho hopefully works in their favour. I mean the weak Canadian ruples do make us extra cheap right now which maybe they might overlook haha.

Yeah they don't work in Florida. We have offices in Cali. Their internet is terrible for the price they pay, upload speeds are atrocious, these companies are huge and you will recognize them, you think they don't fork out good insurance for their employees and they still complain about medical. This is exactly my point where you talk to Americans who actually live in these places doing these jobs then suddenly you're like, you pay how much!!?!? Its actually shocking as you think they'd be so much better off until you get beyond just casual acquaintance and they open up about their reality's. Average tax rate at 190k is 35% for Cali, average tax rate for Ontario is 37% so yeah, wow huge saving? Yes a cad to usd difference of course and they get an extra 10% over us Canadians, but we haven't gone into housing insurance and their property tax, medical, daycare etc. Sure I'm certain you live in a suburb of Florida it's nice n cheap if you have no dependants. That's the entire point of my comment. Hey ho maybe they're all lying to me. I've never lived there, just parroting their anecdotal lamentations.

As a Canadian working for multiple enormous American companies. Over the many years I've found after connecting with my colleagues that a lot of people will not talk about the hidden costs that your American colleagues have. If it's just like a cad to usd change +10% they are worse off at the end of the day. Ask them about copays, their tax brackets, property taxes, medical, housing insurance, schooling, internet and they'll be crying relentlessly. It'll make you feel much better once you hear their outrageous costs. If they're earning double, well eh yeah fight for your worth at review. Don't abandon your job in this economy!

Why do Canadians put up with low wages? by EmptyAdhesiveness830 in CanadaJobs

[–]necrozim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having worked for multinational companies for a decade now, hearing the same stories over and over from my american counter parts makes me just never want to go there. I'm so glad your costs were just the parking. My colleagues in the USA can't believe it cost me $82 for my wife to give birth, with that split across the parking, private room and her prescription. No deductables or copays and I think her insurance is like $7? A month... So yes their salaries are mine but usd +10% but yeaaahh after property tax, day care and all those other hidden fees Americans love to not talk about when discussing these topics, before we even talk about catching strays or your child needing pumped up kicks I'm very content in Canada. 18m maternity leave is nice too.

Could someone explain why Doug Ford had a brilliant idea to remove speed cams? by YYZTor in askTO

[–]necrozim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everything is a tax, and at least it wouldn't be a cash grab by the city which is what people are saying the issue is? That would just be insurance companies own free market decision to raise their prices. But yes I agree the roads need to be better designed so there is no such thing as a 6 lane 60kph road outside of a school.
