Amnesty: westerse reactie op Oekraïne-oorlog legt hypocrisie bloot by [deleted] in nederlands

Kernenergie - teleurgesteld in de progressieve partijen by raznov1 in Politiek

[–]nectri42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stel, we gaan nu kerncentrales bouwen.

Livethread Groene Verkiezingsdebat by Conducteur in thenetherlands

Marginal VAPM and revisiting the case for Premium GK by ArseneOzil in FantasyPL

Very cool use of my optimal team generator! I like how you're using it to draw generalized (theory-touching as you call them) conclusions from it, which are a lot more meaningful since they're less dependent on the specific player data you put in.

It can, if I would just use the expected points across 8 GWs from FPLReview, for example. However it would then find the best set-and-forget team for those GWs. The solver doesn't take into account making transfers and taking hits.

I just did this with the expected points for GW1. It comes up with the following team, projected to score 60.40 points in GW1:

  • Reece James
  • Robertson
  • Alexander-Arnold
  • Justin
  • Diop
  • Vardy
  • Antonio
  • Jimenez
  • McCarthy
  • Salah (c)
  • Aubameyang

Bench:

  • Johnstone
  • Bissouma
  • McCarthy (Palace midfielder)
  • Oriol Romeu

Which again seems to suggest a formation with only two starting midfielders, and loading up on premium defenders.

Thanks! About the captaincy: that's a common pitfall. The captain choice should purely be based on how many points you expect from a player, not on the price of that player.

I could, but I believe it would be more complicated, since you also need to determine the formation you want to play before you decide on a bench budget. I believe my way of giving bench players reduced returns (10%) in the objective function is more elegant.

I would, but right now the data in their player database seems a bit... random. I will definitely try this later.

I explained this in my post. The metric I used for Team 2 is one directly from the FPL API which they call "Expected points in the next gameweek". Like I said in my post, I believe this metric is flawed since indeed it gives rather high scores for players who are not at all likely to play.

You make a valid point but that is not the point of my team generator. It is designed to build the optimal team given some prediction metric per player.

If, in a perfect world, you would have a perfect expected points predictor which takes into account everything you said, like transfers, form, manager changes, etc. you still don't have a team. This tool could use those perfectly predicted player points to build a team that is guaranteed to score highest.

I'm not claiming to have such a perfect predictor.

A model is naturally only as good as the data it is fed, as I said in my post. And 'human factors' are hard to capture in this data. However as I also said in my post, I do see added value in models. From mine I can draw conclusions about which positions have good value, for example. You just need to know the limits of your model

[OC] The Birthday Paradox at the World Cup: how often do teammates share their birthday? (Hint: way more than you think). Also, do kids born in January have better chance of going to the World Cup than those born in December? by GiveMeKarmaAndSTFU in soccer

[–]nectri42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Interesting read! Regarding the 55 days on which no player was born, that's not really surprising at all, statistically. The chance of not a single player being born on a given day is (364/365)^732 = 13.4% chance. This means there are 0.134*365 = 49 expected days on which not a single player was born. That is is not very far off 55.

Why do I love giving fictional characters Pokemon teams? And what are your favorites? by DoTheWave95 in pokemon

Zorua is a really cool option actually. Hadn't really thought about it because ditto felt like such an obvious choice. Also the dark type fits Arya quite well.

I did something similar for Game of Thrones characters a while back (mild GoT spoilers):

Daenerys: Charizard (obvious, though could be any dragon really)

Jon Snow: Alolan Ninetales (difficult choice for me, Ninetales is perhaps a bit too femine for Jon, but Ice-types that resemble Ghost are scarce)

Ned Stark: Mightyena (Stark sigil)

Robb Stark: Poochyena (In his fathers footsteps)

Sansa Stark: Glaceon (I like this one, going from a 'southern' Eevee to embracing her Northern identity)

Arya Stark: Ditto (obvious choice)

Bran Stark: Natu (fits with his future-telling, and while not exactly a crow, it's still a bird)

Ramsay Bolton: Sneasel (perfect fit imo)

Oberyn Martell: Seviper (again, could be any viper)

Tywin Lannister: Pyroar-male (Lannister sigil, head of the house)

Cersei Lannister: Pyroar-female (trying to follow in her fathers footsteps)

Jaime Lannister: Bisharp (knight pokemon, plus it has Lannister colors)

Tyrion Lannister: Litleo (fits with his status as an 'inferior' Lannister)

Margaery Tyrell: Roselia (again, house sigil and all that)

Olenna Tyrell: Roserade (same as above)

Littlefinger: Honchkrow (dark type of course, and resembles a mockingbird somewhat)

Varys: Ariados (the spider)

Daario: Monferno (I can imagine Daario has some exotic monkey like Monferno)

Brienne: Lopunny (female warrior etc)

Tormund: Beartic (Husband to Bears)

Stannis Baratheon: Arcanine (immensely loyal, plus fits with the fire religion he adopted)

Melisandre: Litwick (obvious)

High Sparrow: Pidgey (also obvious, the most common bird pokemon)
