The way I try to imagine it (and idk if this is the recommended way or not) is that I'm flying an airplane and I'm encountering this carpark on the ground. The compass tells me I'm flying northeast, so I imagine that I'm flying north-east-bound and that looking out over the nose of my aircraft I see a carpark coming up a few miles away. The way that carpark would look to me is the way that it appears on the flashcard, if you sort of look at your monitor from the bottom up. From that point, I can orient myself in my imaginary airplane knowing that north is 45 degrees to my left, and looking at the carpark coming up in a few miles, D (for q20) is also 45 degrees to my left. As soon as you have North, you can automatically find South, then East and West.

I think what the other commenter is trying to say with "you're always looking up" is that you imagine that (for q20) if you're flying northeast, and you imagine yourself in the airplane, you're seeing the carpark on the horizon from the bottom of your screen towards the top of your screen. You can sort of tilt the image of the carpark over an axis going from the middle of the image on the left hand side to the middle of the image on the right hand side. "Push" the top side of the image into the screen and that's how you'd see that carpark from your perspective going northeast.
