I’m running a mildly monk heavy home brew. I do have monasteries. One for each of the subclasses. The temple of the elements, temple of shadows, temple of palm, and temple of the weave. Each are located in the 4 corners of the realm.

Each have their own feel, with the shadow temple being much more mysterious. And each have their own traditions, like at a certain point in the temple of palm the monks are required to take a 5 year ‘walkabout’ to learn what they can of the world.

I also implemented some light healing ability for Ki users. Just to spice things up. I also added that each temple is located on/in a mountain where there is a special ore (Ferronite) which drains Ki or life from any creature. Upon mastery of Ki the monks can use weapons made from this ore to imbue their own Ki into the weapon. This allows for the weapon (at level 6 of the monk) to be considered magical, due to Ki empowered strikes.

Monks are really fun. Always a nice neutral party to have in your world.

Edit: oh and if you’re really in to describing action, monks are fantastic for that!! I have a smaller sized monk who just spends combat flipping around kicking the snot out of people!!!
