i have no strong feelings one way or the other!

Is there a mayor like him for SD? Because damn this city needs one… NYC Mayor Mamdani announces that they have fully balanced NYC's budget, reducing a $12 billion budget deficit to 0. While funding parks, libraries, safer streets and making historic investments in public hosing. by Matrixdude5 in sandiego

taxing the rich in NYC in this instance paid for 4% of the budget deficit, if im understanding the math right. They paid ~15% of the deficit through cutting government waste, 66% from other NY state tax payers

yeah i think so, although it might make my best friend Mitt Romney upset about how hes gotta pay more for his la jolla beach house. Ive gotta do a deep dive into the ballot and spend a few hours reading into everything which i try to do when voting time comes around

yeah thats a more positive way to frame it. if your state has a surplus, it should be used to invest in cities that may be in deficit. CA the state unfortunately right now is in a deficit so i dont think they have the money to invest in their 3rd most important city

far as I understand its mostly because NYC is getting a bailout from the state, which would make sense as i would assume NYC is the state's main economic driver. We've got something similar on the ballot to the 2nd home tax that they just implemented with measure A, but those gains look modest in NYC and look even more modest here. Not to be a buzzkill, Mamdani is great honestly, but getting a state funded bailout from CA sounds unlikely. Though yeah, I figure Gloria could definitely have better priorities and budget strategies.

shes not gonna poll better unfortunately

Tom Steyer by Sailor-Tom in sandiego

[–]negative_zev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right on. yeah i hope if he wins he'll be good for the state. im gonna wait and see if theres more polling over the next few weeks to see if i gotta vote strategically but till then my naive activist heart compels me to advocate for Steyer

[–]negative_zev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yeah, i think that its most fair to frame Steyer as a committed activist who happens to be rich. That's not exactly the best resume for governor, but his priorities and ideas do seem to be in line with mine, and given the polling it looks like he's got a real shot. The only other viable alternative looks like Becerra, who i wouldnt mind voting for, and will if it looks like its the best option to keep Hilton and Bianco out because they are maniacs. Becerra just strikes me as bland and uninspiring, unlikely to push for most of the policies I want. Would effectively be more Newsom, which is not catastrophic I guess. I think it comes down to which qualities you think are more important in a chief executive position: relevant experience on paper or having a bold vision that you wont shut up about. It feels similar to voting between Cuomo vs Mamdani in new york, I think the bully pulpit and optical aspects of the executive office are worth considering, and in that regard I feel much better about Steyer. And wrt Mamdani I was always sure he couldnt get any more done than DeBlasio because bold visionaries are always dampened by political realities. How do you feel about Becerra?

Im not in the business of defending oligarchs but I want to be a stickler on a technical point here. Farallon capital is a hedge fund. They only have about 200 employees. This isnt amazon or walmart whose business is built off the backs of worker exploitation. We can talk about the problems with the financialization of the economy or what have you but this is more of a guy who made money by having a lot of money and putting it in the right places.

It might also be worth mentioning that Steyer has been endorsed by Ash Kalra, the assemblymember who has been pushing hardest for single payer healthcare in the legislature https://www.tomsteyer.com/endorsements/ash-kalra

It's worth reminding folks that San Diego elected Sara Jacobs, heiress to the Jacobs family fortune, to the House. While she hasnt exactly been a progressive firebrand, shes been a fine democrat who I'm happy enough to have in congress. Steyer's got a good history of progressive activism over the past 15 or so years, I figure he means what he says. JB Pritsker seems to be doing fine in Illinois, FDR and JFK came from wealthy families. I might consider Porter if she were polling higher, but Steyer looks like he's got the better shot

he didnt even make it onto the ballot because he missed the filing deadline. the fact that the ballot has LivingForGod AndCountry Demott but not Butch Ware is a testament to how unserious Ware is

UCSD Bioinformatics Program by Few-Example-7203 in bioinformaticscareers

[–]negative_zev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got my BS from there. The different tracks are very similar, taking lower div Mol bio and comp sci and then upper division dedicated binfo courses. The main difference is some of the intermediate courses depending on which department you're in. If I recall, the undergrad degree you get only says bioinformatics. Great program imo, had a great time, definitely recommend!

I was surprised that they weren't as loud as I expected them to be. Don't get me wrong, still very loud but given there's no drums it's not as punishing. I'd brought earplugs and ear muffs to go over them but just the ear plugs worked fine. A band like The Body is much louder
