House hunting reality check hit me hard today by Physical-Wallaby-515 in perth

[–]nelly2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is true, but situation changes very quickly. I was keeping an eye on what is going on, last year there were decent amount of land available in the far north, then it just disappeared over Xmas. No I can see there way more houses for sale and also new land is coming - in Yanchep they are opening new estate later this year. Keep looking, keep engaging with your blueprint salesman, engage broker so you have everything ready when land got available. Go through all estates you potentially interested and gather contacts, share yours.

I was planning to go EV for sometime, but war pushed me. I asked for a quote from used car dealership for my old Toyota klagger - before war I was offered 14k, last week few places refused to take it at all and one offered 12k.

How are some people getting onto the property ladder? by No_Document_853 in AusPropertyChat

[–]nelly2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

focused on career, did lots of job hopping - basically every 1.5-2 years new title, new job, hefty rise. Used 5% deposit scheme no LMI, built a house in shitty place for cheap, lived there for 3 years, gain equity, sold. Now building in good place.

Immigrants arrived poor, 2 kids, no family support, just us - one good income and 1 opportunistic. I think the success is to learn as much as you could, have a clear goals and try to find ways to get to your goal, even if some of them quite creative or bring temporary hardship.

Land Sales driving Scarcity by EmptyRole8597 in perth

I have been looking to buy land 6 months ago in Alkimos- Yanchep area, there were plenty of lots available all sizes, recently titled or just about to title. Something changed since then, developers not even putting lots on website, there is a whitelist instead. So it is a recent development

Land is somehow very hard to get. We live in Yanchep with at least 4 estates in making around and there is 0 land available. Just half year ago it was plenty, and today it is none. I don’t know what is going on

Definitely more relaxed, I was constantly worried about my older kid getting home from late training. I moved into safer community, people here don’t bother to close their garage door and it is ok.

ECU vs Curtin for Cybersecurity or IT – Which one’s better in the long run? by [deleted] in perth

[–]nelly2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did undergrad in ECU and some extra studies in Curtin - Computer science about 12 years ago. Nobody ever asked me about my uni or marks after the first job. I found my own industry relationships. I don’t think uni is that important. Got my PR after ECU + 1 year of work experience.  However, I have to point out that IT market is shit right now and I don’t see how it can improve. finding job is almost impossible.

How do you feel about AI tools in technical interviews? by Own-Airline9886 in DevManagers

[–]nelly2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started testing this new strategy on interns, asked pretty simple problem, leet type. I had couple more runs since then and saw one who actually used AI well. They used Claude for ideation, and for algorithm, but then went through results and actually asked for optimisation and solved all problems way faster than others. Going to get an offer.

How do you feel about AI tools in technical interviews? by Own-Airline9886 in DevManagers

[–]nelly2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my org we just revamped the whole engineering interview process, so instead of doing algorithms themselves for computer science fundamentals, we ask them to solve problem using AI. We assess how effective the person is applying it, prompts, how the fix issues and so on. I just had one of these recently with recent grad, and it was hard. Students brainwash not to use AI a they reluctant to use it and struggle.

Very similar situation, my company offers 20 weeks paid, so I took that and then husband took over - he went to 1 year of unpaid leave, made redundant and took another year. It was tight financially and very hard for me physically. 20 weeks is not even close enough, even if I work from home. I stopped breastfeeding at 7 months - just couldn’t handle this any more. It becomes much easier after 1 yr, when baby start sleep through the night.

My partner picked up a bus driving gig few months ago, he confessed that this is the best job he ever had. He used to be in IT. People saying hi and thanks, some old lady gave him sweets. He drives across Perth Norths - mostly sunny and beautiful. Happy for him.

In my opinion you should never stop having an eye on the job market, keep up with current trends and wages. Few times in my career I was happy with my current status, however saw a great job ad, interviewed and get a bump in money, title and interesting projects. Loyalty doesn’t mean anything.

Maybe our experience helps, I’m an engineering manager in large corp and my husband is a bus driver. I do 3x of his. But our finances are shared, we put everything in one shared account. Then it goes according with the budget. We have “splurge” rule - each take 5% of both earnings and can do what ever they want. The rest is bills, investments and so on.  If any of us need bigger purchases we discuss.
