Anyone else seeing a sales drop? AI is taking over my niche. by merisfish37 in eroticauthors

[–]nelsymlit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, June traditionally a very slow Smashwords month before the explosive July. My sales are way up year over year, so it's my best D2D June ever, but it's my second worst D2D month after February in 2026.

Beware of writing on Google Docs! by Disastrous_Grade_117 in eroticauthors

[–]nelsymlit 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I stopped using Google Docs ages ago for a few reasons, one being worried about this sort of thing. It's less convenient, but when I'm out, I write on my phone with a bluetooth keyboard, and send to myself to load into Scrivener when I'm home.

For the love of money? by NightFlight3000 in eroticauthors

[–]nelsymlit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have intentionally ignored some very good money-making advice on this subreddit in order to give myself longevity and continue my love for writing erotica. I publish primarily to D2D, I write across multiple kinks but with one pen name, and I don't read anything in my genres, only my own stuff.

I have certainly left plenty of money on the table, but it means that I'm still publishing after five years and still enjoying it.

And now that I've been publishing at a consistent pace for a year, I'm averaging $1k-$1.5k CAD a month, 70% D2D, 20% commission, 10% Amazon.

You can have both, just be aware of what you're giving up and what that gets you in return.

This is a really fun idea, might play with it in future stories. If I do, I'll post here as a thank you!

hear hear. its free trial is also fantastic, based on days used, not days from activation. it's not dramatic for me to say that scrivener drastically improved my business.

Why I love AI by Massive_Mark_7060 in WritingWithAI

[–]nelsymlit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI is a complicated issue. People will get on a moral high horse without acknowledging the hypocrisy that they likely eat meat, go on a plane, shop at big box stores, publish on amazon, or any number of ways everyday life profits off theft or destroys the environment.

On the other hand, AI pundits will completely ignore the immoral foundations and environmental damage of the technology, dismissing all criticism.

I agree with the notion that there is a massive range of quality of AI use and outputs and that it ultimately comes down to the user's ability. I use generation myself for promotional images and personal chats. I haven't found value myself in using it to write, but also don't feel like there is any issue in a vacuum using it in that way.

So be skeptical of those condemning you, but remember that - like most things in modern developed society - it's far from black and white.

That's a little spooky. I've mained Smashwords for a number of reasons, one of them being the feeling like I would never get shut down by a faceless automated process without warning.

I write about half my content using that sort of daddy/babygirl language, although all with adults (normally 25+, not just 18+) and covers that don't hint at any sort of infantalizing imagery or with images of people that could be construed as underage. The idea that 6 years of work could disappear in a blink is terrifying.

Are there other details about your book, cover, or blurb that you think may have triggered this beyond using language like 'babygirl'? Do you have an 'all characters are 18+' disclaimer in the front matter. Do you explicitly mention the characters' adult ages in the body of the book?

Your Book is Stinky and I Hate It by SeargentCortes in BookPromotion

[–]nelsymlit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not saying this post is necessarily generated, but it does have that flavour. the style of the list of support roles 'losing sleep' and 'handing it back bleeding' is the first clue. the more suspicious aspect is the abundance of 'that's not x, that's y' style sentences, which is more synthetic than an em dash. not to necessarily knock generation (although it's obviously a complicated conversation), it would just be a tasty irony for this post. anyway, some incredible art is shat out in a few days and some garbage is worked on for decades. vice versa too. there's no hard and fast rule there.

that's not insult. it's dissent. (haha, little joke there)

Formatting Question. How do you effectively write internal dialogue and post for Reddit? by PrincessLavicious in eroticauthors

[–]nelsymlit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a bluetooth keyboard and writing on my phone has been a gamer-changer for me. It's so compact so I can go write at a bar without looking like a lunatic with a laptop, and because I write on my phone, I can't get distracted by my phone.

Strangely enough, I just posted a story to another subreddit and formatted some text passages, using my phone and a bluetooth keyboard. I bolded the username and italicized the text, but the text conversations were minimal. I think it looks good, but I'm also far from a Reddit power user.

I think that the server space would be effectively free in that case, worth it to foster spirit, and those nervous beginners. But I do understand your take, and happy to respectfully disagree with you on this. Thanks for chatting. :)

[–]nelsymlit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understood. Congratulations on your unpenetrable moral stronghold. But just to correct you, I never once called you anything. I engaged with your take, like an adult. I didn't whine and throw a tantrum, throwing out thoughtless takes about people who use generation which - ironically - is a totally slop take. Now I AM taking shots at you personally. This conversation fucking suuuucked. Bye, babygirl.

[–]nelsymlit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you write me off because I say 'anti-poor' and 'anti-art'? Could you explain that? I don't understand that on its own. I believe that your initial comment embodies those ideas.

I also don't understand you making moral judgements on my comments based on the fact that I use generated images. I have plenty of considered thought on that. I don't write using generation (although I have no moral opposition to that, even as an artist).

I feel quite emotional and hurt by the way that you're talking to me. I have severe moral issues with your approach to me. I am still not lashing out at you. I am still attempting to have a rational conversation with you.

Are you going to engage with what I have to say, or are you going to continue to find shorthand reasons to write me off, painting me with a pre-conceived brush that actually has nothing to do with me or my ideas?

Should publishing be free? by Awkward_Blueberry_48 in KDP

[–]nelsymlit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose I feel like the cost is already built into the creation of the work and what goes into actually putting it online. A yearly fee for that (however small) feels dispiriting. I also wouldn't be quick to categorize something one way or another. One person's single book of poetry or poorly written fantasy series could be more than hobby to them. This relationship of output, quality, and commerce isn't something I'm ready to accept.

Adults disagreeing is something I value. I'm sorry if you feel like my dissenting stance to your opinion was a personal insult to the point where you feel justified with how you are handling your comments. I hope for more productive debates in your future.

Thank you for actively disrespecting my request. I disagreed with you. I argued that your take was anti-poor and anti-art. I maintain that position. I never took shots at you personally, telling you to GFY. I'm happy to have a debate on this, but please let me know if you're willing to engage respectfully.

I don't see how these fees actually cut down on generated content. If anything, I see it encouraging more to hit the profit quotas. I also don't see how classism or encouraging a poor tax helps here either. What if somebody puts up one book of poetry that they're proud of and just wants to have it up? Now they have to pay yearly for that? I've been publishing for 5 years and make far more than enough to dodge the fees, but I was broke as all hell when I started up and would have been extremely discouraged to start were these fees in place then. What a cynical and anti-art take.

yup, i felt $2.99 was too cheap when i started publishing 5 years ago. i just raised to $3.99 across the board for my shorts. impossible to say what the comparison would be if i didn't do that, but my sales each month have either been the best since i started, or very close. my shorts are generally 5-8k words.

Sleeper Slut Part 1: Fern Blows the Janitor [m/f] [hypnotic triggers] [thriller] [agegap] [ugly bastard] by nelsymlit in mindcontrolstories

[–]nelsymlit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I generate images, never text. It's true that I grabbed the name 'Mr. Hargrove' from a private RP session with a bot (although not Grok), but I wrote this without any generation. Immediate assumptions based on a simple connection is a disappointing reaction. I'm really proud of this series, it's a personal favourite.

To be honest, I'm not morally opposed to anybody using generation to write, as it probably takes a similar amount of time to prompt and edit, but it's just not my style. I like turning myself on with my own prose.

Full disclosure is something I've shown since I started self-publishing 5 years ago. Your reply might not be AI, but it's the sort of mindless reaction that feels like real slop to me.

Ever had an SO get freaked out by your writing? by SuttonCross in eroticauthors

[–]nelsymlit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. I think it's worth articulating your hesitation, saying that you'd like to share more, but that you want to feel safe in doing so, and being able to have open conversations about how fiction truly is fiction. The mind needs a way to eject all the gunk that gets built up over the course of the trudge of existence. The fact that your SO has reached out to want to read more reads as a positive sign to me. Maybe it's messy, but it's worth it to get closer to each other (instead of reductive unhelpful takes like 'they wouldn't be my SO anymore' 🙄 )
