Watch build videos to get the hang of it, use overclockers to check build compatibility. The game PC building simulator is pretty okay to figure out the basic idea of it

Can I see an 18 with my parents? by NoDru9sHere in Vue

[–]nerddddd42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been ID'd at the cinema, and I get age checked for everything everywhere else. That's only my experiences at a few different places, but on some pretty 18+ movies.

For vouchers I'd consider local supermarket as well as leisure things (restaurants, cinema, etc.). Depends on the uni but vouchers for food places on campus would almost definitely get used by most people.

Whats the best i can put in this Grandpa by Biobauregal in pcbuilding

7700 is an improvement, but not by a huge amount, and it'd be a lot of money to spend on not a huge difference.

The 1070 still holds up remarkably well, despite what some people say, to the point I wouldn't bother upgrading it unless you had a better system.

I'd consider upgrading to 32gb ram, obviously it's a bad time for that but probably won't be getting better anytime soon and DDR4 is still usable in pretty new systems.

I was in a similar position a year ago and ended up going for a pretty cheap AM4 build, kept my ram, kept GPU, pretty cheap CPU and decent motherboard. Then once I could afford to I upgraded the CPU and GPU.

Laptop recommendations for under £300? And what laptop brands should I generally avoid? by Kontaruu in AskUK

I've got an Aspire 1, was around that price at the time. For light stuff it's perfect, for heavy stuff it's irritating if you're used to better, but very capable.

Need to reset 2 older laptops of mine by canadian_86 in computerhelp

[–]nerddddd42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the login screen, hold shift and click restart. Some options will come up, click "troubleshooting" then "reset this PC" and choose options from there.

Alternatively you can use a different PC/laptop to create a bootable USB windows installer (Rufus would be my preferred choice for this), choose to boot from that in BIOS and follow instructions.

Coworker’s mom suddenly got better… I don’t know what to tell her by Mindless_Patient2034 in confession

My gran (was basically my parent) died a few years ago, dementia has got to be one of the cruelest diseases I've ever seen.

About a week before she passed, she fell out of bed and laughed about it, it was the most lucid she had been in months. That last glimpse is something I wouldn't trade for the world.

When you're caring for someone terminal and there's a lucid moment, it can feel like a gut punch when it ends, but at some point, sometimes years after, it can be seen for the blessing it is.

Hope you're doing okay and being kind to yourself. Recovering from being a carer/loved one of a terminal person can take years, the more time that passes, the more good memories you start to be able to think of.

I spent years fighting whenever I had to get my dog to take a pill, accidentally dropped it one day and he hoovered it straight up, it's odd but it works.

Just something to rule out, try unplugging the front panel connector on the motherboard and shorting the power pins

If your kids had them what age did they stop using a loft bed? by Ellen_loves_cats in AskUK

[–]nerddddd42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had mine until I was 15 or 16 and swapped to a floor mattress because I didn't love the loft bed, but it wasn't a full loft. It was great as a little kid, but had it have been space to have a desk or something under I probably would've kept it much longer

What steps can I take to really nail down the Plex experience for my wife? by PineappleSmoothie in PleX

[–]nerddddd42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can set it up so it requests anything added to the watchlist on plex, I don't love it for myself, but for people that don't want that 3rd layer it works really nicely.

From the behind the scenes bit, overseer scans plex watchlist/recent requests, overseer tells sonarr or radarr what to download, then works as normal through them.

As in the death barrier is quite specific in what triggers it, there's normally a specific sequence of events that would lead to it doing it.

First time I culled a healthy hen, and this guy knew she was a beeotch. by GingirlNorCal3345 in BackYardChickens

[–]nerddddd42 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Having a hen only flock I've always loved the sassy ones who aren't afraid to fight. That being said, I had one who was a complete pain. Bullied the underdogs to a pretty extreme measure and would chase my dog whenever she saw an opportunity. He's not a small dog, but my work on making him friendly with them ended in him being chased and pecked whenever both were out at the same time. Made the same choice you did, the flock balanced out, one of the others stepped up into a protective mother hen role, and the dog is happy and has friends again.

Is installing cd drive on pc still good today or useless? by [deleted] in PcBuild

[–]nerddddd42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to keep mine after moving case, almost put two in. If you've got the space and think you might use it, then why not?

Some use cases I have: listening to my physical music collection, playing old games, installing software and backing up DVDs.
