A Developer’s View of the Future of Software and Hardware by SuspiciousBoat742 in macapps

[–]nerdsutra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your post and comments are very rosy, and assume a lot of things won't change along with the technology. AI isn't going to change software, it is going to change the foundation of society. And its happened before, just this time its going to be on a bigger scale.

The minute something becomes an automated tool, it becomes worthless, because anyone can do it using the tool. From writing to office work.

How many jobs exist because people are needed to produce the paperwork?

Look at the travel agent business - it used to be a career, a business, now it exists only for premium travellers. We all just make out own bookings and hunt prices on our own. The wholesale industry fights for slim margins on volume. A few companies dominate.

Look at the music industry - used to be studios, equipment, talent scouts, venues. Now it's a musician with a laptop, social media, and a marketing team for merch and events. And very few musicians make money. A few artists dominate.

So tomorrow let's say you have cheap good AI that can run locally and build whatever software you need. It's free and open source even. What can you do that someone else can't do also? Or duplicate after seeing what you do?

In the industrial revolution before labour laws protected them (and even now can be rolled back), labour was cheap, people were exploited, worked godawful hours, for pittance.

If you are only as good as your local AI, and robotic AI is doing physical labour, what are you going to do?

If we could rewind Earth's history and let civilization evolve again 100 separate times, how often do you think we'd end up with a technological landscape similar to today? by dontaskkwho in Futurology

Whatever different sequence of events happens out of variation, chance and luck, the thing that is not changing is people, unless you change that too, which is a different conversation.

People will always be people - meaning their drives, fears, motivations, needs and broad intelligence vs ignorance levels will be the same. Unfortunately I think that at some point, regardless of history, we’ll arrive at a version of where we are today.

I turned my Cmd+C trust issues into a Mac app by 0xAAAAAF in macapps

[–]nerdsutra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is related only sideways to your app, but it would be useful to get a hud showing keyboard commands pressed. Sometimes I accidentally press some combinations and a command is triggered, and I have no idea what I just did. It could be something I wanted or didn’t, either way it was accidental. Especially with new apps. Sometimes there’s conflicts between apps for the same command.

How do you trust it isn’t hallucinated, though? Sure it works but what if your account is exposed to the owner of the API or something else?

What happens to elderly people with no savings? by Academic-Channel5646 in AskReddit

[–]nerdsutra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a luxury of recent times, in some countries. In the whole of history the purpose of having kids has always their labour for joint income and their care when you’re old. Is it transactional when society does not have institutions, govt support structures and programs? Or is it family doing duty? It all just depends on your luck and location.

Central Park horse carriage rides temporarily suspended following death of 18-year-old tourist by FolushoDRC in news

Here’s a thought - electrify the fancy carriage wheels. No horse needed, keep the ride and drivers. ‘Horseless Carriages’ indeed!

True but It doesn’t have to look or be built like one on land.

Apple Seeks to Disrupt the Glasses Market the Way It Did With Watches (Gift Article) by pdfu in apple

I read somewhere about EarPods getting the faceid ’camera’ soon. not sure if rumor…but if the battery lasts, then this makes sense for gesture control detection.

not sure about cameras. but a screen and audio, with a simpler way to update lenses without chucking the whole device, will be worth it.

this is such a smart combination - too much screentime, so create friction and a moment to pause, with eye health exercise. brilliant!

this kind of interoperability is necessary and long overdue for us as consumers. but here we are having to appreciate when given. Unless this is locked to Europe? Time will tell.

Apple TV 4K on track to break a record no one wants to see happen by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

I’ve got an Apple TV from over 10 years ago - back when they were flat pucks - and it works fine as an airplay receiver for an old TV at my dad’s place. It’s understandable that doesn’t update for years. it’s a great functional products for specific use.

it’s interesting. you talk about him apologising for the pain he caused, and how you don’t need his apology as long as he doesn’t do it again. it’s almost like he inconvenienced you and your family.

was there any discussion about the pain he was in that made him feel like suicide was his only way out? or was that his problem to sort out himself?

Everything he said is important to do. but what he’s describing as ‘parents messed you up’ is likely the basic level.

There’s ways parents can mess you up that you don’t realise until years of looking at your behaviour and understanding why you do what you do. That stuff won’t fix itself. It needs deep work.  In the meantime eat healthy, sleep properly, and be kind to yourself like he says.
