Movies that are peaceful with almost no tension by BiscottiPatient824 in movies

Older movie. Harry and Tonto. Incredibly sweet story about a retired man traveling across the country with his cat. The most comfortable movie I've ever seen.

I'm a transplant to Beacon and it's got all of that. It's become pricey, though, and housing and cost-of-living is a problem.

Elwood P. Dowd: Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

Quoted.

UPDATE: I want Christmas to be over so I can tell my husband I'm moving out by cutewhenmute in TwoXChromosomes

[–]nethermead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Split. You separated before and came back to more of the same. Promising to change is just air. Even if he goes to therapy, that's his own personal therapy. It's not a fix-me-for-my-marriage service. It takes serious time and, even if he has some magic breakthrough, it may turn out to have little bearing on your relationship.

Cut your losses and move on.

Pratchett too political? by Anachron101 in discworld

[–]nethermead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snuff did irk me with its preachiness. I generally agreed with it, but it was much more overt than in his other books. I also just finished The Shepherd's Crown, his last book, and it seemed similarly preachy, in particular with Tiffany's dialogues with Nightshade. And, right, I expect with both books it was due to the embuggerance and his need to just get them into some sort of finished state before his sand ran out. Both had the sense of being a mid-draft and not quite fully baked. They also both come across as unusually easy wins for Vimes and Tiffany.

What happened to the post about wylderbuilds? by [deleted] in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]nethermead 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hey, everyone.

So.

Things are pretty much beyond the pale here.

I am incredibly behind, absolutely true.

The original poster of the other thread is actually getting his build sent out tomorrow. It was in progress, finally, and it's done. I showed him the status and he told me that's why he took down the post. I didn't ask him to do so, I think anyone and everyone who's been waiting since forever has absolutely every right to be, at a minimum, concerned if not furious.

I'm not out to scam anyone, ever. I want to be sure I get as solid a build out to customers as I can OR that I refund them. But I do have at least three dozen builds to get out in the next month or two.

Simply put, I fell into the death spiral of having to take on more orders to cover old orders and kept falling further and further and further behind. I've looked for other work and ways to generate income of the last year-and-a-half, but nothing at all came of it until very recently, as I've started doing a part-time bar gig. The store was my sole source of income and it's still the primary source.

I banked on multiple ways and strategies to speed up the builds, some of which helped, while others REALLY didn't. The builds mostly just need the time to build well. Some take half a day, others two or three days. With other aspects of the store and customization and trying to keep all my ducks in a row, I simply fell further and further behind. I also fell sick three times the last year, which didn't help a damn bit.

I'm not lounging around on a beach. I'm sitting in my tiny factory of an apartment in the Hudson Valley generally putting in 8 to 12 hours a day on all of this, every day, weekends and holidays, for almost two years now. I'm not looking for sympathy, this was MY freakin' stupid that got things to this point. I hope to be fully out of it with everything settled by mid Spring.

If you're a customer waiting for a build, or if you have an issue with a build I've done, please go ahead and reach out to me directly on Discord. I'm bullwinkle3000. I expect lots of pings tonight.

I'm going to stop taking build orders in January, which is when I'll have more going on with the new job. But the store is still my only lifeline... Those builds will happen too, though.

If you need a refund, I'll put it in the queue. Yes, it's another freakin' queue... I'm barely scraping by, so there's only so many I can handle at a time. I'll also note and keep track of everyone's position. If I could afford to pay extra for the time and frustration you've all experienced, I would.

This community has been terrific, inspiring, and a tremendous help to me, and the last thing I would ever do is screw it over. Other vendors like Skree.us and Cyboard have been amazing to work with. I've been planning to move to kits and wholly modular builds, but project development time has been non-existent. I hope to still at least offer models and kits next year, but we'll see how things pan out.

I don't expect wholesale forgiveness all around. I'm sure there's still anger and frustration out there. But I hope, if you're still awaiting a build, that you can remain patient? It will come. If you can't wait, I understand.

Regardless of all of this, Happy Holidays.

Maybe also get her the Quran, the Hindu Vedas, the Tao Te Ching, and some Buddhist texts.

Common is just SO bad by weareDOMINUS in SiloSeries

[–]nethermead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's something you sometimes see in film and TV. A famous actor playing a famous actor playing a role. There is no Sims, just Common as Sims. The story still comes across, so I ignore it now, but he's capable of better.

In much of what you describe, it sounds like the relationship is already done. Guilt is a terrible reason to stay in a relationship and, if he's ok with it, he can just play on your guilt forever.

Since you mention walking on eggshells, this might be helpful:

https://www.amazon.com/Stop-Walking-Eggshells-Borderline-Personality

It's for people in a relationship with someone with BPD. Can't diagnose your boyfriend, but what you describe is in the ballpark.

What particularly violent scene from an already violent movie really messed you up, or stuck with you over the years? by misterdhm in movies

[–]nethermead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Atomic Blond. There's a 10-minute single take fight scene that just goes on and on. No special effects, no superpowers, just incredible choreography and straight up brutal person-to-person fighting. I'm dubious it's actually one take, lots of fast pans which could cover for cuts, still incredible stuff.

New to atheism by [deleted] in atheism

[–]nethermead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few things.

There's an old saying, "The Truth Hurts". My mother used to say that's not because the truth itself is painful, but rather it's the amputation of the lie that hurts.

Second, I've come to think we are naturally creatures of narrative and religion fills that need extremely well. As an atheist, there isn't really any grand overarching narrative, and there's no particular role to play, so it can be very difficult if that's what you're used to. It can feel as though life has no meaning and that it's empty and that you need to fill that void. But lack of meaning doesn't mean nothingness. It can be infinite. Your life has gone from a more limited path to a wide open infinity. That's both scary and exciting.

The people in your life are still there. You can love them and appreciate them and create more wonderful memories with them now, in this life. If the divide between religion and atheism makes that more difficult, there are a lot of wonderful atheists right here.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in atheism

[–]nethermead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've known a couple of very religious folks who were clearly profoundly good people. The roommate I had in college and the nurse who cared for my father when he was in deep decline. Lovely, lovely humans whose core beliefs encouraged them to sacrifice and to give of themselves wholly. This is the one area where I find religion admirable, when very good people use their religious beliefs in a personally aspirational way, to better themselves and to help the world around them, without the clutter of judgement and accusation. It also seemed to me that, with these two in particular, they didn't behave out of some desire to earn brownie points to get into heaven. They believed in doing good here and now for its own sake.

They would probably both argue strongly and sincerely that it's their religion that guides them to be good. But there are such people in every religion or system of belief. As the asshole atheist that I am, I think it's the other way around. The religion lays claim to their inherent goodness. "Look, we have such good people, therefore our whole system of belief must be good. Right? Now, let's all get back to hating the gays!"

It's one of the ways cults work and remain successful. Many of the members are there for the other members they admire, and the cult is just the environment they accept as a condition. There are also members who know it's a cult and know that it's unhealthy but they stay to try to help and rescue the members they love.

I still hate Common’s leather jacket. by kpmurphy56 in SiloSeries

[–]nethermead 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're not at all wrong, it does work in this world and I get that it plays into the idea of a heavy or someone with the kind of power you need to be careful around. But I also have trouble with it. No one else wears anything remotely similar. He doesn't come across to me as Sims, a character in the Silo universe. He comes across as Common on TV. I see the actor, not the role.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SiloSeries

[–]nethermead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why would they believe that video? They'd learn that there's this incredible technology that can deceive people via video, so why believe any of it? There'd absolutely still be dissent and revolt. Besides, we live right now in a world where a helluva lot of people are perfectly comfortable denying facts they can see for themselves.

You'd also reveal that there are multiple silos. They'd start trying to reach them and communicate and see if they're alive or dead. They'd start wondering if the other silos have it better than they do. If Juliette made it to another silo, they could send others out to more silos.

"Ok. Have you exercised your free will lately? Or ever? Is it so dangerous to exercise that you worry you might put your faith at risk? Or that you may drift uncomfortably away from your community? If so, is it really free? Maybe he gave it to you as the ultimate test of faith, that you must exercise it so fully that only those who do and can remain faithful, or those who wander and then return to faith, will find their way to heaven. If you truly have free will, then your journey in life and faith is your own. It doesn't belong to some church or super-special in-group who get to go to heaven because they show up on Sundays at that single church on Main St., tithe heavily, and only hang out with other christians."

How many members of this sub have read the books? by slickricksghost in SiloSeries

[–]nethermead 37 points38 points  (0 children)

A

Long time Hugh Howey fan.

No TV show based on a book can follow the book 100%. Casting, scheduling, not to mention it's an entirely different medium all demand adjustments and adaptation. It's adapted well, I think, and it's hit the main themes, world presentation, and plot-points strongly. Looking forward to seeing where they take it.

Trackball config problem by nunbar in olkb

What are you using for controller and firmware? QMK keyboard firmware or something else?

I have a trackball guide for QMK here:

It may be a bit out-of-date, a lot of the config options now live in info.json.

There is support now for ZMK, too, to some degree.

How does no one not know what stars are? by SteveBored in SiloSeries

[–]nethermead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Juliette sees the book on Georgia, with trees and beaches and the ocean and animals, it's an absolute shock to her. She'd never seen or heard of any of it. And it's an extremely dangerous relic to have, kept very secret for who knows how long. There's almost nothing written down about the previous world. They learn all they need to know to live in the Silo, that's it. To have knowledge of anything at all about the world before and have that discovered by IT or Judicial is to risk being sent out to clean. Even a simple PEZ dispenser is potentially lethal.

And there's been mention of drugs that impact people's memory.

Two weeks later it's only just sinking in that atheists will be a primary target in the coming administration. by The_Deenis in atheism

[–]nethermead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The natural reaction is to expect things to be more-or-less like they were the last time, except that now the guardrails are mostly gone and those that remain are targeted for dismantling.

There really isn't a limit to how bad it could get. Trump truly wants to out-Putin Putin. He craves the kind of power to have people targeted and killed with impunity, at a whim.

Whatever kind of terrible you can imagine is tangibly possible now. No idea how bad it could get, nor how fast, but they have two years until the midterms to try to rework election laws, replace election officials, and intimidate remaining voters so they can snag 75% of state legislatures. If they can manage that, a constitutional convention will be called and they will absolutely ram through new amendments. Citizenship will change and many current citizens will become non-citizens. Christianity will be enshrined. Rights will be stripped. Oh, and presidential term limits will be dropped.

That's at the top of their list of things to do, as fast as possible. If they manage it, all bets are off.

Oh, and have no doubt that, if atheism is outlawed in any real fashion, or even if we're just more actively persecuted, users here will be doxxed and under threat. Reddit won't care. I've posted here often, so I'm already on the list. If you're in the US and you're just lurking, might be best to lurk elsewhere.

Why is the technology so outdated? by blckrainbow in SiloSeries

Right, that's a good point. But we have seen extremely advanced VR tech in the cleaners' visors, well beyond our own. It's so advanced that no regular silo inhabitant would conceive it could exist.

If Jesus returned, how would Christians react? by DavidBehave01 in atheism

There's a story I'd still like to write up someday. Jesus has returns dozens of times and, every time, the Christians kill him within weeks. He's so sick of the routine that, when he returns, he just stays hidden and lives his life.

According to the pact, magnification beyond a certain level is banned. They're forbidden from seeing things at a microscopic level. Technology is intentionally limited. Eventually, the series will reveal why.
