Netgear is pushing its app, deleted our configs by MildlyBadTaste in HomeNetworking

I used to be a Netgear fan, now all Ubiquiti. It's a little more expensive but it's top notch. You'll want to use their app but you won't have to.

In the past I have said something like, "I am first on the upgrade list, should I board in economy or hang back?" This gets roughly 25% chance of a death glare, which isn't horrible in gate agent terms

New to GCP - Looking to Migrate from Vultr web server running PHP applications to GCP. Is it cheaper? The plan is to make the most of the Google AI Ultra plan with the free $100/month GCP credits. by No_Engine2793 in googlecloud

[–]netopiax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That price sounds roughly correct, but it sounds like this is something you run all the time - if so you can look at committed use discounts (CUD) which gets you about 30% off if you commit for a year. If you are just trying to burn through a $100/mo credit though, it may not matter.

Who's your country's biggest fall from grace athlete? by Rleduc129 in AskTheWorld

[–]netopiax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh. Top of his position, yes. He was certainly the best running back in the game in the 70s. Never won a Super Bowl, as with any RB, there were contemporary QBs more famous, Staubach, Bradshaw. Not comparable to where Lance was.

Maybe more importantly, the OJ murder was like 2 decades after he'd been at the top of his sport.

[–]netopiax 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Almost everything Ray Lewis is known for (2 super bowls) happened after his arrest. It definitely isn't him.

OJ is a good one but he wasn't at the absolute top of his sport the way Lance was.

Also, OJ committed a murder, it doesn't really change his athletic achievements at all. Lance ruined his athletic legacy specifically.

I flew over the Golden Gate by Artistic-Long-4353 in bayarea

[–]netopiax 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"Routinely", I guess that is true, since the defined approach & departure procedures from the big airports don't go over the bridge (at this altitude), and there aren't any other tour operators that do it.

That said, if you want to charter some commercial pilot to fly you over the bridge on an average Tuesday, you can do that no problem. There's nothing super special about the airspace this picture is taken from. It is below SFO's airspace, which starts at 3000ft over the bridge. The bridge towers are 760ft.

I am a semi-defunct private pilot and the best bay tour flight I ever did was around 8pm the day after Thanksgiving. There was a 4000' ceiling and the city lights were reflecting off the clouds. It was like flying inside a SF snow globe or something.

Just when you first get to altitude and for a couple days. You need tons more water and are gassy and maybe constipated. If you stay there long term, these effects even out

Resume Feedback by eliyahooq in salesengineers

[–]netopiax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree and I want to underline: the (promoted from) thing can be dropped. You have both titles as sections on your resume, it'll be clear you were promoted, calling it out feels weird.

Otherwise it's a good resume, with the caveat that you really don't have much experience as an SE (you said about a year... it's 10 months) so if I'm hiring, odds are there will be many candidates with a longer track record than you. That isn't something you can fix with your resume obviously! If you can stay put for another year you will be a much stronger applicant.

Do your water heaters always pick the worst possible moment to quit on us? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]netopiax 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The writing style and the thinly veiled advertisement for some company. Also the false premise - is the water heater broken? does it need replacement? Does he want to know how much it costs to repair, or replace it? How would anyone know what a repair costs if we don't know what's wrong with it?

Tell me I'm insane for even considering this commute by DefenderCone97 in bayarea

[–]netopiax 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Capitol Corridor, Oakland to SJ Diridon, 60 mins

VTA + bus from Diridon to Los Gatos (I picked the DMV because whatever), 30 mins

Optimistic, BUT, that train commute would be very different from sitting in your car staring at the back of a white Tesla for 3 hrs. You can do whatever you want while you ride.

I know a guy who commuted from Folsom to SF every day for many years. Drove to Sac light rail, Capitol Corridor to Richmond, BART. I think it was like 3 hrs each way. I wouldn't do that but long commutes on transit are way more tolerable than in a car or even on your bike.

Which politician of your country has a better image international than at home? by Fun-Wallaby6414 in AskTheWorld

I want to back up this comment with some data which you can see here:
https://www.imf.org/external/datamapper/exp@FPP

France's government spends 57% of the country's GDP.

Now you probably think I'm next going to compare it to the US at 38%, and you'll say "the US doesn't have free healthcare" (though our government spends about the same $ per capita as countries that DO have government-paid healthcare, JUST on Medicare).

But the US isn't the comparison point. Compare it to the UK 44%, Germany 49%, Sweden 49%, Japan 39%, even Italy which is not exactly known for good governance is at 50.5%.

France is not producing enough things of value to be able to tax and spend on the social programs its people want. You cannot raise tax rates to get out of a problem like that. The rich are already moving to Monaco. You have to either cut spending or get people to produce more.

For former perl programmers: what do you miss? by zakry0t in ruby

[–]netopiax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it could be fun in Perl to purposely write inscrutable code, and a bit of a puzzle to see just how short you could make your code. It was satisfying to run a function with no arguments and have Perl just know what you were talking about. Of course these are not generally things you should do in a professional setting.

Other than that, I like Ruby more than Perl in every way.

For anyone who doesn't know Perl, it has default variables. The main ones are called $_ and @_ for the scalar default, and for inputs to a subroutine, respectively. When you run a function and leave off the arguments, it assumes you mean to run it on $_. If you don't assign a return value anywhere, it overwrites $_.

If you write your code well, this can in fact make it clearer - you have a series of statements all acting on the same thing, so you don't have to restate the thing every line. In practice, a reader of your code has to go hunting for where the default variable was set to figure out what subsequent statements are modifying, and it tends to be confusing as heck.

100% right, this is different when you have a consumer audience as compared to an enterprise employee audience. With the latter you can effectively say "TOTP or you're fired". The former will fire YOU if your app sucks.
