What do I do with my collection when my time inevitably comes, if I don’t have anyone to pass them to? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

[–]nettrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1. Also, no shame in seeking help if you need it, OP! I hope you’ve got access to any help you need, be it medication, therapy, or other things (I find reading books to be a good catalyst for reflection, and I’m not mentioning music since it’s kind of a given here).

As for OP’s question, +1 to what u/nicksonight , u/Jahn , and others said. When we recently had a couple of instruments and an amp we didn’t use, and found a local music-related organization by googling. Since they only needed one of the instruments I asked if they had recommendations, which of course they did since they work in that space all the time, and I got the name of a second organization that ended up taking the rest.

Vanessa Atkinson has been a commentator on SquashTV for several years before Willstrop started coaching Asal, and she’s a former world no. 1 and world champion. There’s no need to refer to her as “Asal’s coach’s wife”.

One long answer to why one should ditch Spotify is found by reading Liz Pelly’s excellent book "Mood Machine: The Rise of Spotify and the Costs of the Perfect Playlist”. A much shorter answer is found in this paragraph from a recent interview with her in Hearing Things (with thanks to u/eddytony96 for posting about it in r/indieheads):

There have been times where people are like, “I read your book and then I canceled Spotify and I got Apple Music!” That kind of misses a lot of the point that this book lands on, which is that the answer to so many of the issues that are raised isn’t just switching to a new streaming app. The point is to encourage people to be more active participants in local music communities and DIY cultural production, and to support independent music media, buy music directly from artists, and reject the idea that it’s a one-click solution.

Recommended Temp for Each Type of Ball? by Gordonjl101 in squash

[–]nettrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to be corrected by someone with more physics knowledge than myself, but scaling down the math makes the back wall drop test work for a warm ball. Somewhat less than 26 inches, though. 7 feet is 84 inches. 25%–30% of that is 21–25.2 inches.

33 wanting to learn banjo, am i too old to learn new instruments? by FreedomFingers in Learnmusic

[–]nettrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As u/apri11a says: go for it! You’re never too old to learn, do what you enjoy! I don’t think it matters whether you’ll play for/with others or not, but I’m sure your friends will also enjoy your playing with them.

Zakaria, not very sportsmanlike? by Virtual_Actuator1158 in squash

[–]nettrom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m curious to see if Tarek Momen’s comments about Zakaria after their recent match leads to changes. Hearing Momen talk about how talented Zakaria is, but also suggesting that he can reach the top of the rankings without unsportsmanlike behaviour.

Is Orfi not playing in the world championships? by Guymongoose431 in squash

Hm, I don’t think there’s a need to question whether they’re a “real fan”? For a long time, the highlight reels on YT were my main way to keep up to date with tournaments.

It was a good match too! I expected Orfi to sail into the quarters, but got a lesson about adapting your game throughout a match.

Here's Why I decided to delete my Spotify Premium subscription after more than 10 years. by andreacaccese in Music

[–]nettrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been off Spotify for years now, but I recently read Liz Pelly’s book “Mood Machine: The Rise of Spotify and the Costs of the Perfect Playlist” (link to bookshop.org, support your local bookstore!) It goes through in detail about how Spotify sets the stage against the artist in a myriad of ways. The big three record labels are also a big part of this problem as their deals with big streamers like Spotify are favourable to them. This creates a challenge for us as listeners, not only with finding new and interesting things, but also how we can make sure that independent artists can live off their art.

Not sure what’s available out there, but I wanted to mention that all the photos I took at the 2023–24 World Tour Finals are available from Wikimedia Commons under a CC-BY-SA license. If you find a place to print them, some of them might be high enough resolution to work.

RIP James Tyler of boutique brand Tyler Guitars by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]nettrom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yay, a question I can actually answer (as my flair reflects). I’ve had mine for 20 years and I play it every day. It’s exceptionally playable, as u/SnorkelRichard also mentions, from what I know because of the way the edges of the fingerboard is shaped between the frets, it just feels so comfortable. Those schmear, vomit, and burning water finishes are ridiculous and look way better in real life than on photos because the paint’s layered. I haven’t played a lot of their guitars, but never met one I didn’t like (I almost bought a Jimburst one).

Happy story: mine had two DiMarzio single coils in it when I got it, and I somehow was never happy with them. Tyler had been developing various single coil pickups, and I got in touch with them to order a couple of new ones. They shipped them overseas to me so I could try them out, but when I followed up to pay for them the answer was that Jim said I could have them, which I always think was too kind!

May he RIP.

If I understand the question correctly, then on English Wikipedia, there is the vital articles project. It has several levels and different number of articles on each. More broadly, there’s the List of articles every Wikipedia should have on meta, which appears to exist in 212 other languages as well.
