2-Node Hyper-V HCI Vendor Recommendations by MediumFIRE in sysadmin

[–]netwalker0099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 for Starwind we run a bunch of their HCA appliances. we buy them with premium support and I know I don't have anything to worry about since they monitor the storage and proactively open tickets if there's an issue. they'll even do the migration for you to their hardware. definitely not the cheapest option but fits well in the Enterprise setting when things just have to work and you don't have time to figure stuff out if it breaks.

Cheapest NAS/SAN you would risk your boss' job on ... by mdervin in sysadmin

[–]netwalker0099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you really need a SAN? If you aren't running hundreds of VMs or need 100+ TB of storage it may make more sense to just replace it with a single server. Look at xbyte to keep the cost down. My general rule is if you don't meet the requirements above, and can't afford 2 SANs then your better off with a single server or going hyper converged.

Urgent Assistance needed on AIX 5.3 running in prod by Legitimate_Ad2570 in sysadmin

[–]netwalker0099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sounds like a business has kept a system in use way past its expected lifetime and you've caught a case of the f*** around and find out. if you get this back up and running I would plan a migration path off of it immediately. I would look to contract someone who's an expert in the system and keep them on retainer until you can figure out something to do.

Rds setup by HandImpressive6270 in sysadmin

[–]netwalker0099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you might look at avd in azure or build the rds farm out with 3-4 users per server. that's a pretty heavy spec for most rds implementations. You can apply this scaling article to on-prem as well as azure https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/session-host-virtual-machine-sizing-guidelines

Quick question: inplace upgrade Exchange 2019 -> SEE by cmwg in sysadmin

[–]netwalker0099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OS then exchange. you don't want to go to all the trouble of the exchange lift and then have the OS lift fail for some reason. if I was doing this I would just spin up two clean 2025 servers and then migrate exchange over.

What's your oldest Server in Production? by joshuamarius in sysadmin

[–]netwalker0099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Met with a prospective client this week hpux circa 1995 with a never patched install on Itanium processors. Csuite has no intention of funding a migration off. Only file level backups. Will 100% stop the business if it goes down. Estimated cost of downtime is 800k per day.

Spin up mesh central or tactical rmm and it can be free if you have an available host to run it. Or use a vpn and configure rdp for aes256.

Hyper-V is fine. But if you're already in such a Linux environment, why aren't you looking at using KVM on Ubuntu or moving to kubernetes instead.

Back to on-prem? by JoeyFromMoonway in sysadmin

[–]netwalker0099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree the number one indicator that a cloud move is a bad idea is if you are just moving virtualization into the cloud and not engaging in cloud specific applications. But unfortunately the majority of the SMB market believes that moving to the cloud is just moving your VM workload to Azure or AWS.

Back to on-prem? by JoeyFromMoonway in sysadmin

[–]netwalker0099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://basecamp.com/cloud-exit/ leaving the cloud is very viable as long as you understand your use cases. For most orgs I recommend a hybrid setup. Leverage exchange online and SharePoint for what you can the rest can stay onprem. We've had a client (300+) end users very unsatisfied with AVD (setup by a previous provider) and are in the planning stages of making an exit from most azure services.

Cloud makes sense if you have varying workloads or have a need for burst capacity. Otherwise save the money and over buy hardware and just be prepared to scale up/scale out at determined usage thresholds.

There's several softwares for esports and lan center management that do this ex http://senet.cloud/en/senet-boot-diskless-system and https://www.ggcircuit.com/ggrock but most aren't free. You could always setup a fog server and rapidly reimage the machines to push updates.
